Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I know this question is not smash related but are there any other games you are looking forward to besides smash?
Edit: I forgot to put my list. I’m not thinking y’all lol
2018:
Soul calibur 6
Spyro
2019:
Animal crossing
fire emblem 3 houses
Devil may cry 5
Sekiro shadows die twice (I think it’s coming out next year)
Final fantasy 10/7 yea I never played these games
Battle Princess Madelyn, Spyro, Luigi's Mansion 3 and DMCV are priorities for me, Save Me Mr. Tako and Dragon: Marked For Death are lower-key.

There hasn’t been anything new from Pit since August (Mega Man has had it even worse, but he isn’t a priority like Pit is)
I know right, he didn't even have his own Memories post, though I strongly suspect it's saved for his lady. :ultpalutena:

ZephyrZ ZephyrZ , I think you would like seeing this gameplay a lot. :ultpokemontrainer: is still really good.

Oh hey there's some actually competent Ivysaur play here. Competent Charizards are pretty rare (why do so many players try to Flare Blitz in neutral?) but competent Ivysaurs are even rarer.

Those Vine Whip sweetspots were pretty nice. I'm going to have some fun with that move.

Was trying to list out what we had left, but you did it better than I could.

Also one thing to note, we've had 40 assist trophies shown, and Sakurai said there were more than 50 of them. We can assume it's less than 61, as if it were more than 60, he would have probably stated that. So I would say 11-20-ish assist trophies could possibly be revealed and used as content after the final Smash Direct. There's no shortage of content to be blogged about.

Speaking of 2019 games, when the **** are we going get more info on Three Houses? I'm hyping cautiously after Fates left me angry and disappointed (though Echoes was a pleasant surprise and easily destroyed the former), but I'm pretty sure this game was slated for March. Dedicated Direct in December maybe?
I hope we do get more information since the game is coming out next year. I assuming it’s coming out early 2019. Do Nintendo even have directs in December? (Sorry I’m not that informative when it comes to when Nintendo have their directs)

Fake Smash Ball was covered already. 7/31/2018.

Also yeah I'm pretty sure announcements are not tied to blog content. If they have stuff to show they will regardless of how far along the blog is in showing it.

Heard about the rumor games for the N64 Classic Edition. What’s your thoughts on not having Super Smash Bros. 64 on it?
No Smash 64 and Rareware games really hurts it and I guess that would decreases Banjo's chances as well. At least you'll probably be able to hack games onto it.

The story was. Gameplay? A complete trainwreck. NES FE was ****
Are you kidding? It's some of the best gameplay the series has had in a long while.

Different =/= bad. It's not even NES Fire Emblem by any stretch of the imagination.

I loved Echoes, but let's not pretend it was perfect. The character writing was great (well, mostly great) but it's story was still bad (although not cringe-inducing like Fate's) and the map design was ew. Mila's Turnwheel was a welcome addition but was far too generous, and the retreat option was game breaking. Dungeons however were done surprisingly well, and I actually like most dungeon maps. But a lot of the problems it had it inhereted from Gaiden and it tended to succeed wherever it did its own thing, so it still keeps me a little optimistic for FE's future. Although their DLC pricing was disgusting.

What was wrong with Fate's story? I remember thinking about getting back in 2015 but then it dropped off my radar.

Nah, Fates had good gameplay. The maps in Echoes were terrible, and spells from HP sucks too. Dungeons were cool though

To me, it was ridiculously black and white, no pun intended.

Conquest was very obviously "We're the bad guys" yet MC never had the spine to stand up to Garon.

And the Hosido game was just......easy.

I actually really want to see how sakurai would do a modern redesign for Space Harrier in smash

He could straight up take the gundam influence the original Space Harrier had and make him look almost like Char Aznable/Quattro Bajeena
A small Opa Opa could assist him in battle as a reference to its appearance in Zillion
Hes say's "GET READY" in his battle intro and his victory quote is "WELCOME TO MY FANTASY ZONE". Maybe have the dude from Planet Harriers be his echo fighter. His Battle stance has him floating like Dark Samus and he uses his big ass laser gun for most of his attacks.
Maybe he gains coins while playing as him and he can taunt the weponalds shop to appear so he can upgrade his gun to different types of shots

Have his stage have several enemies from space harrier and fantasy zone as bosses like the castlevania stage since they share the same universe along with a space harrier theme remix and other sega arcade game remixes.

would be cool

If Nintendo still continues to re-release EarthBound and Super Mario RPG, there's no way we're not getting Smash Bros. on the N64 classic.

I'll happily take James Bond.
Just imagine his Trailer's intro...
Starts off with the smash symbol, zooms in and everything is dark. Then, suddenly...
God, that'd be the coolest thing honestly. They could just make him a Snake Echo if they wanted. I know it sounds ridiculous but I'd lose my mind just as hard for James Bond as I would Banjo.

Would they even call him James Bond, though? Maybe 007 or "Bond"?

I just don't think the blog factors into when they decide to show new content. Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting the final direct to be shown until next week at the earliest, which would leave time for that stuff to be covered. I just don't think the two are directly related yknow? I think it's just due to the time between announcements, especially due to the fact that Nintendo didn't wait for everything from the E3 direct to be shown before doing the August one.

Basically to put it in simpler terms, I don't think Nintendo slowed down the rate of announcements for the blog to catch up to the August Direct's content, moreso that us catching up to the August direct was a consequence of that. Their actual announcement plans must take precedent over the blog's plans IMO.

Echoes had great gameplay, story and characters, my only problems with it are:
-The map design which are either "this map sucks and it's used 20 times during the game" or "holy ****ing **** I love this map why doesn't it appear more times?"(any of the castle/fortress maps are sick as **** for the record, it actually feels like you're storming a stronghold for once). There are also boat maps which I love and think are all great
-And lack of class variety. You'll end up with so many repeated classes it gets boring, especially when previous games had so many you'd not even be able to use all in a single playthrough.

Still the best 3DS FE

Man, this year is moving fast.
Let's put it this way: There is about 7 days LESS waiting time between now and release, than there was between the 8.8 direct (the last big news drop discounting Isabelle) and now. On top of this we know we are due for another big (likely the biggest, if not the best) info drop via another direct even closer to help bide the time.

Which is honestly why I'd like the Direct sooner than later.

Next week is the "Month and a half" hurdle crossed, which means the excuse of "It's too early" is getting even less and less relevant.

Well, the community could use a good "I came here to laugh at you" meme variant. Would he be considered retro? Seeing as he never really gained prominence outside of the game itself.

I hope we do get more information since the game is coming out next year. I assuming it’s coming out early 2019. Do Nintendo even have directs in December? (Sorry I’m not that informative when it comes to when Nintendo have their directs)
I decided to check into this since I was curious about this as well, and I have found a few instances for December Directs. I'll do a general list to try and keep this looking neat:

12/7/2011: Covered 3DS and Wii games, was also Nintendo's 2nd-ever direct (with the first being 10/21 of the same year). Was Japan-only.
12/5/2012: Covered 3DS and Wii U games.
12/19/2012: Dragon Quest X was covered, and it was a Nintendo Direct Mini. Japan-only, considering DQX didn't release in the west.
12/18/2013: Covered 3DS and Wii U games.
12/15/2015: Smash 4 DLC Direct, which announced our remaining DLC fighters.

So a general Direct for next year's titles could be possible, though it might be determined by how soon we get our next information for Ultimate. It is possible to have a Smash Direct in November and a general one in December though, as November of 2015 had that happen in reverse. It's certainly within the realm of possibility.

Looking at the site right now, there are 4 layouts for the stages right now.

Mobile -> Has 2 empty slots.
Normal -> Has 0 empty slots.
Slightly Zoomed Out -> Has 2 empty slots.
Way Zoomed Out -> Has 2 empty slots.

What was wrong with Fate's story? I remember thinking about getting back in 2015 but then it dropped off my radar.
I could write an essay on all of it's issues. A failure to commit to the themes it presents for the sake of fanservice, Corrin being an effective Gary Stu (and that's not I term I use lightly), plot wholes and tons of other things it doesn't explain (why doesn't anyone question Corrin's sudden ability to turn into a dragon?). And their explination for Gen 2 units still leaves me scratching my head. It actually had a few good moments, but the story clearly lacks polish and was warped to place an emphasis on player pandering over competent story-telling.

I still think it's a good game despite it's story and would still reccomend it if it looks fun to you, and I think it's core gameplay might actually be the best in FE history thanks to the now interesting and balanced pair up mechanic. Conquest had some challenging, thought-out and well polished map design to top that (Revelations stinks though).

Don't forget, even in the normal layout, there's a tab covering... 5 spots... which lines up with CoroCoro

(but might mean nothing)

In terms of new items, Pokemon, and assist trophies we haven't seen on the blog yet from E3 and 8/8:

  • Rage Blaster
  • Healing Field
  • Banana Gun
  • Killing Edge
  • Staff
  • Ramblin' Evil Mushroom
  • Vulpix (Regular)
  • Pyukumuku
  • Ditto
  • Burrowing Snagret
  • Chef Kawasaki
  • Arcade Bunny
  • Klaptrap
  • Nikki
  • Scizor (?)
  • Gray Fox (?)
Safe to say we'll still be seeing this stuff up until launch.

Corrin's Dragon transformation is less plot relevant than Lily and that's actually pretty sad when you think about it. It gets dropped so fast you can't even process it and it begs the question why is it even there in the first place.

I know you're reading this. Vote 2B.
Calling it, Direct announcement tomorrow.
If I'm wrong I will do absolutely nothing, mark my words.
How could you be wrong? You're Vergeben!

I'd say I expect some sort of announcement tomorrow too, but... Last time I said that, I said the same thing the day before that, and the day before that...

I'm desperate and delusional is what I'm trying to get across here.

Gen 2 units in that game just screamed fanservice, which isn't bad as a concept, problem is they made no sense in the game's story. They just slapped the mechanic on because they knew it was popular in Awakening, completley missing the fact that it ACTUALLY MADE SENSE IN AWAKENING.

Shame because there's a few genuinely interesting units in that game, but the main story just doesn't grab me at all. Granted I only played the Hoshido side and never tried Nohr.

yea he'd be very retro. Last game from the series was the Sega AGES remake of the first game on ps2, however Space Harrier gets a ton of appearances in stuff like Yakuza so i feel he'd atleast be recognized by people who at least played a yakuza game. He was in a Japanese only mobile game recently along with other sega characters too
