Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I know. it's amazing.
Smash is gonna be awesome, but Gen 8 is gonna be the highlight of my existence. Especially if it's as good as they say it'll be.
2019 can't come soon enough.
2019 is also going to be home of Animal Crossing Switch, Luigi's Mansion 3, Yoshi's Crafted World, DLC for Smash (assuming that's in the plans), and if we're lucky, potentially Metroid Prime 4. And that's just the Nintendo front; Kingdom Hearts III is coming out in January. A HUGE game is coming out that early in the year. That is gonna be insane.

Nintendo came out swingin' last year and are gonna keep swingin' even into next year. This really is a way different Nintendo than we had with Wii U and 3DS, and I am completely okay with that.

I've been wondering how much from 8.8 is still left.

My biggest fear is if we go back to 3 characters a week, and only 1 item per week, they can drag this out for awhile.
There are like, 18 characters left not on the blog.
That would be six weeks with three characters, leaving around three weeks until Smash releases.

My favorite blog posts are the ones focusing on stages like Onett and Brinstar.

Cheers Sakurai but this is the fourth time in a row they're in. We know...

They've certainly learned from the Wii U era.
I was like 12 back then, but even I noticed the periods where big releases were lacking.
With the Switch it's just one huge game after another.

"Hey guys, check out this cool new stage, Dream Land! It's back from the original, and Melee, and both versions of Smash 4's DLC!"

Pokemon 2019 is the big one. They barely talk about it (gotta push Let's Go!) but when they do they always say things like "It'll be the best one yet!" and
"Long time fans are gonna love it!". I really hope they keep their promises, because from the little they've said it sounds like a dream come true.

I'm also gonna use Animal Crossing 2019 as my first foray into the series. Possibly Prime 4 as well.
I might check out Fire Emblem too.

With the Switch it's just one huge game after another.
Unifying their handheld and home console dev teams was genius on Nintendo's part. Not to mention them outsourcing IP again being another fantastic way of getting games out.

Don't get me wrong, Wii U had good games, and IMO even a few amazing ones, but the release gaps and droughts on the thing were awful, not to mention the noticeable drop in quality near the end (Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, Star Fox Zero, Amiibo Festival). 3DS was honestly what kept them afloat during that time, as it has one of the best Nintendo console libraries of all time IMHO. Sure, there were missteps with it here and there (Yoshi's New Island and Sticker Star come to mind), but it had 10 times more hits than it did misses in my eyes. Not to mention that, in my opinion, it ironically got the better Smash Bros. game in terms of content.

The Switch is pretty much Nintendo taking both the good and bad from 3DS and *Wii U and learning from it. Yes, they still have some things left to learn (NSO is abysmal right now and desperately needs better perks), but I'm convinced they will slowly learn and adapt with time. Will they be the top dog again, just like the old days? Probably not, but I do think they have a pretty dang bright future ahead of them regardless.

*EDIT: DERP, I meant Wii U, not Switch! My bad. :p

It hasn't been confirmed as 5 Arena, but considering the fact it's an Arc Sys Perdona project, its a safe bet.

I just want those FighterZ style graphics pls
and Goro to have a Black Mask install as his level 3 super

Not the biggest Pokémon fan I think the recent main line Pokémon game I tried was Pokémon X and Y. But I hope pokemon 2019 is the best Pokémon game for the fans cause from what I seen there is a lot of mixed opinions about the let’s go games from the fans. I never seen the Pokémon fan base so divided.

Arc Sys confirmed they're working on a new Persona project.

Also not every thing is 2019

And forgot Doom Eternal and Prime 4

Definitely picking up Metroid Prime and the new Fire Emblem. I'm a huge fan of both franchises.
Pokemon is a bit of... meh. I used to be a huge fan of the franchise, but I lost interest. Last Pokemon game I owned was X and Y.

Gonna pick up Animal Crossing. It'll be my first game of the franchise I've ever played. Now I'll get to know why everyone lost their mind over it being announced. No need to explain Tom Nook though. I already know he's purely evil.

A character will only become the next K. Rool or Ridley if people spend almost two decades discussing them through speculation and requests.

K. Rool was genuinely the last white whale of longterm Smash speculation. Only Geno is remotely comparable.

Multiple people can point out that K. Rool was not at all popular during Brawl speculation. No, that belongs to Diddy Kong in terms of DK characters, Rdiely overall. K. Rool wasn't even a blip on the radar then.

If we are to go by the logic that you're suggesting then Isaac is a ****ing shoo in but alas he's looking less likely for base as the days go by.

As an introductory game for little kids and Pokemon Go players Let's Go looks fine, but if you're a long time fan it might not exactly appeal to you.
A lot of long time fans are fine with it, but a lot find it's design choices questionable at best and stupid at worst.
I crap on it a lot because I think it's funny, but ultimately i'm not angry at Let's Go. It just makes me a little sad.
It feels like Gamefreak is ignoring fans like me to go chase after the mobile market. I hope 2019 proves me wrong.

Nobody said anything about character likelihood. That’s not what being “the next ___” necessarily means.

Either way, people have been anticipating K. Rool since Melee, even if Diddy was obviously more popular, is the point of my post.

Speaking of characters from other companies, I realized, does Sega even have anyone really on the radar for Smash besides Sonic?

Konami has Bomberman, even Frogger.

Namco has Heihachi, Lloyd, and other relevant characters/IPs.

Square has Dragon Quest (and Sora if you want to count that), and the various characters under the Eidos banner.

Capcom has a veritable treasure trove of characters that don't need to be repeated.

But Sega really feels like it's missing a mascot character that could team up with Sonic. Even Bayonetta isn't really comparable. I guess there's Puyo Puyo and SMT...?

If Ken is in, you could legitimately have a "___ vs. Capcom" match-up, with the Capcom team being Mega Man, Ryu, and Ken. If Banjo or Dixie is in, we can even have Rare vs. Capcom!
Sega has a TON of characters but Arle and Kiryu are probably the closest to mainstream right now. Not counting Persona ones of course.

Banjo & Kazooie were highly requested in Melee (along with James Bond, it should be noted), enough for Sakurai to mention the legal problems with the characters at the time. So, I say, with those legal problems less troublesome with Microsoft presumably on board, it makes perfect sense now. And Crash I feel like is the most iconic platformer not yet in Smash, particularly being Sony's former mascot no longer being owned by Sony. With those two in, we can have the Nintendo vs Sega vs Sony vs Microsoft battle of the century.
So what you're saying is IT'S JAMES BOND'S TIME.

Not quite how I remember it.

While I've been wanting K. Rool since 64, the DK community focused their energy on Diddy. Then when Diddy was revealed we didn't really expect K. Rool to be added, but we were hopeful.

Smash 4 comes along and K. Rool has now garnered the momentum as the next DK choice. Yeah, Dixie and Funky are also popular, but on forums they were never as high as K. Rool. Now that the croc is in, I do want Dixie next. Although the idea of Funky is growing on me.

Sekiro shadows die twice (I think it’s coming out next year)
Final fantasy 10/7 yea I never played these games
2018:
-I would say Spyro as well, but I will unfortunately not be picking it up right away, mainly because I'm currently saving for the (probably too much) money I'll be spending on Smash in December. I'm also waiting on an announcement for Switch, or at the very least, PC.

-Katamari Damacy: Reroll (My first Katamari. I can't wait!)

2019:
-Tales of Vesperia

-Kingdom Hearts III (This game is going to destroy my backlog for the entirety of February)

-Fire Emblem: Three Houses (I keep forgetting it exists despite how excited I am for it, lol)

Yoshi's Crafted World (I'm frightened Good Feel might have been taken off of it, though. If they have, then I'm gonna be really nervous about its quality, so I'm hoping they're still onboard despite not being mentioned in the last trailer)

-Luigi's Mansion 3

-Animal Crossing Switch

-Pokemon Gen 8 (With Noipoi on this one: I hope it's gonna be as big as they're claiming)

-Hopefully Metroid Prime 4, but I'm a little doubtful about whether or not to expect it next year.

-Any DLC that comes out from Nintendo, as all of their post-launch content for the Switch has been A++ so far.

This is what my end of 2018 and 2019 list looks like so far. And these are only my planned NEW purchases - not counting all the **** I already have.

2017 Nintendo came out swinging hard, 2018 was a bit of a down year but still had some solid releases, 2019 is going to be ****ing STACKED though. Nintendo typically has an on, off, on years pattern.
