Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Multiple people can point out that K. Rool was not at all popular during Brawl speculation. No, that belongs to Diddy Kong in terms of DK characters, Rdiely overall. K. Rool wasn't even a blip on the radar then.

If we are to go by the logic that you're suggesting then Isaac is a ****ing shoo in but alas he's looking less likely for base as the days go by.
This. This. And this Again.
The Brawl Era Speculation feels like it's getting a constant revisionism.
Ridley was THE most wanted.
Then Sonic but he got announced and broke the internet in half and got into news, because Jesus MARIO VS SONIC FOR REAL.
Diddy was also asked a ****tons with Dixie.
After Sonic, Megaman was asked a tons
And Cloud was in everyone's Top 10 wishlist of Characters they wanted in. Even if impossible back then.

And that's it. There Characters that had a growing fanbase but characters like K.Rool and Geno only got a second life for Smash 4 (K.rool) or DLC/post DLC (Geno)

The only Characters I think is "worthy" of being Ridley/K.rool follow-up is Isaac.

I know you're reading this. Vote 2B.
Sega has a TON of characters but Arle and Kiryu are probably the closest to mainstream right now. Not counting Persona ones of course.

B

So what you're saying is IT'S JAMES BOND'S TIME.
I'll happily take James Bond.
Just imagine his Trailer's intro...
Starts off with the smash symbol, zooms in and everything is dark. Then, suddenly...

Speaking of characters from other companies, I realized, does Sega even have anyone really on the radar for Smash besides Sonic?

Konami has Bomberman, even Frogger.

Namco has Heihachi, Lloyd, and other relevant characters/IPs.

Square has Dragon Quest (and Sora if you want to count that), and the various characters under the Eidos banner.

Capcom has a veritable treasure trove of characters that don't need to be repeated.

But Sega really feels like it's missing a mascot character that could team up with Sonic. Even Bayonetta isn't really comparable. I guess there's Puyo Puyo and SMT...?

If Ken is in, you could legitimately have a "___ vs. Capcom" match-up, with the Capcom team being Mega Man, Ryu, and Ken. If Banjo or Dixie is in, we can even have Rare vs. Capcom!
Sakurai is a huge fan of sega's classic arcade titles

Opa Opa or Space Harrier would work well repping all their iconic arcade games like afterburner, super hang on, fantasy zone, etc

Dark Souls Remastered
Transistor
Shovel Knight (physical release)
Pokemon for Switch
Luigi’s Mansion 3
Metroid Prime 4
AC for Switch
Yoshi for Switch
Doom Eternal

This is what my end of 2018 and 2019 list looks like so far. And these are only my planned NEW purchases - not counting all the **** I already have.

2017 Nintendo came out swinging hard, 2018 was a bit of a down year but still had some solid releases, 2019 is going to be ****ing STACKED though. Nintendo typically has an on, off, on years pattern.
This goes along with the rumors prior to the E3 Direct that E3 2019 will be more jampacked (though I feel like Smash was sufficiently mindblowing for me for 2018).

EDIT:
Did they showcase both Vulpix? I cant remember. Not sure, but we could still have a bit of stuff to cover from 8.8
They've only shown Alolan Vulpix, going by the blog. It's nice to be able to sort any item/assist/character.

I know this question is not smash related but are there any other games you are looking forward to besides smash?
Edit: I forgot to put my list. I’m not thinking y’all lol
2018:
Soul calibur 6
Spyro
2019:
Animal crossing
fire emblem 3 houses
Devil may cry 5
Sekiro shadows die twice (I think it’s coming out next year)
Final fantasy 10/7 yea I never played these games
For the rest of this year no (I already got Spidey and this year’s WWE 2K, Smash is all I need left this year)

2019 so far I only anticipate Fire Emblem, Luigi’s Mansion, and hopefully Metroid Prime 4

Spyro, DOA6, Soul Calibur, DMCV, Luigi's Mansion 3, Streets of Rage 4 and Kingdom Hearts all have me hyped out of my mind.

2017, 2018 and 2019 might go down as some of my all time favorite years in gaming.

Someone on Reddit said there's still a combined total of 16 "Items/Assists/Pokemon" leftover from the 8.8 Direct.

Frankly put, even at 2 a week, I feel like they'll eventually have to call it quits.

I can't see us going 7-8 more weeks without a Direct, longer if we go back to 3 veterans.

I thought that much was obvious.
The latest we are gonna get a Direct is like, November 5th imo.

Speaking of 2019 games, when the **** are we going get more info on Three Houses? I'm hyping cautiously after Fates left me angry and disappointed (though Echoes was a pleasant surprise and easily destroyed the former), but I'm pretty sure this game was slated for March. Dedicated Direct in December maybe?

The Western side of Pop Star.
All this pro/anti talk about Waluigi and I'm not sure what to think. On the one hand, yeah, he could be a really fun edition. After Paper Mario and Fawful, he's my most wanted Mario rep.

... Yet there'd be something innately wrong about Waluigi getting into Smash. It's fundamentally to do with his character. Look how Wario is a corrupted and grotesque version of Mario. For Mario, it's all about saving the princess and possibly saving the world. On the way he may collect a load of coins, but that's hardly his end goal. Yet for Wario, getting money and treasure is what it's all about. If he happens to save a princess or a kingdom then whatever, but it's more of a side effect of his actions. This is most blatant in a scene where he literally chucks the princess he just saved to the side so he can claim his treasure.

What I'm getting at is that a similar situation goes for Luigi and Waluigi. One of Luigi's personality traits is his resentment at being overlooked and constantly living in his brother's shadow. Waluigi takes this to an extreme: he's self-pitying, thinks everyone else is cheating and yearns more than anything to be in the spotlight. Recognition to Waluigi is what money is to Wario. By including Waluigi in Smash - which is the Ultimate (har har) form of recognition - that would kind of go against his character. Yeah, it'd be nice for Waluigi to finally get what he wants, but then what could he be self-pitying and resentful over? The character is just a punchline to Nintendo and, as sad it is to see him constantly get dunked on, that's part of who he is.

... I dunno, probably overthinking this
If he got a taste of fame he'd just want more.
He's greedy, just like his...brother?...Friend?...Second Cousin Twice Removed?
I'm pretty sure Waluigi makes a pretty good case for being playable while remaining resentful and self-pitying in every Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Sports title he shows up in. So, every single playable appearance he has.
Adding to that, he's the Mario universe's Dastardly, and even he is allowed to win in some Wacky Races spin-off games, so I'd say it's a fair cop.

I could see Three Houses getting a plug in a Nintendo Direct Mini in January. It's how they hyped up Kirby, which released in a similar window.

I legitimately can't find anything new at all for him. Maybe I myself will change that...
There hasn’t been anything new from Pit since August (Mega Man has had it even worse, but he isn’t a priority like Pit is)

Did they cover every single possible bit of content after the E3 Direct prior to the August Direct? I just feel it’s a tad odd that they would continue to draw out the wait.

Maybe i’m just in the denial phase of the wait for the next info dump.

But really, to be honest I don’t even know that Directs are scheduled around the blog updates. Sure, they cover information we receive a bit more closely, but your average fan doesn’t even view the blog. I’m probably the only person among my friends who checks it daily, and even then I only check it to see if there’s a surprise announcement with low expectations.

A Direct could show up at anytime imo, but the longer Nintendo waits, the closer they get to dangerous territory with leaks. Not to make it seem threatening really, but they should consider dropping this before November. While Let’s Go is a big deal, i’d argue SSBU is the bigger game, and the last thing you want for your biggest game of the year is for it to be deflated when somebody else details your hype train and leaks your material.

Bowser looks siiiiiick. Were his aerials always that fast? And dang that defense: He took a Flare Blitz at high percent and survived!

Marshadow's today's blog.......surely we have to be nearing the end of 8.8 Info, right?
I mentioned what we had left the last time I saw you mention this with Zero's blog update, but I'll repost the current list of what we have left that hasn't been shown on the blog as far as newly added items/Pokémon/Assists for Ultimate:

Six new items, with one announced back at the E3 Direct:
6.12 - Healing Field
8.8 - Banana Gun, Killing Edge, Rage Blaster, Ramblin' Evil Mushroom and Staff

With Marshadow's reveal as of tonight, we now have two Pokémon, all from the 8.8 Direct:
Ditto and Pyukumuku

And four Assist Trophies, with one announced back at the E3 Direct:
6.12 - Burrowing Snagret
8.8 - Chef Kawasaki, Klaptrap and Nikki

I do feel it is possible that the blog will not cover every item before Ultimate releases, especially with a final infodrop coming at some point down the line and the assumption that the blog itself will cover every character before release. Considering we still don't have posts for Healing Field or Burrowing Snagret, we probably won't have every new thing from the 8.8 Direct be talked about on the blog before the next Smash Direct.

They didn't cover everything, but we still have a large amount of stuff left.

They kiiiiiiiiiind of dragged their feet on it, and legit they could drag this into the middle of November if they wanted to at the current pace.

Heard about the rumor games for the N64 Classic Edition. What’s your thoughts on not having Super Smash Bros. 64 on it?

I'm willing to bet money we'll get all the info we're missing on this game by the very first week of November.

Then they can dedicate all of November to marketing the game completely, with all the content.
