Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Dang, I didn't know it was going that bad:(
Yeah, you know things are bad when the composer demanded royalties for having his songs included in the game.

Super Mario Land 2 is awesome, the only problems are that it has occasional slowdowns/frame drops and the level design is a bit too simple in some levels. Other than that, it's a very memorable and underrated Mario game.

Mario Land 1 though, that's a completely different thing IMO
ML1 holds up well all things considered, aside from being half the length of SMB1.

I see that you're also a man of culture as well, his reveal was among the most exciting parts of 4 for me.
Ultimately us as a human race will never deserve how amazing Punch-Out!! for the Wii was, Little Mac's inclusion in Smash just because of that game is more than justified.

I really wished Smash 4 capitalized on that game's content, and even more so with Super Punch-Out!!.

My first Nintendo game was either some NES game or Banjo-Kazooie. I remember something that may have been 8-bit or 16-bit TMNT, I dunno, with one level having trees in the way or something so it may have been something else, but I have better memories of B-K, and I was 3-to-4 years old.

This was also 2003-2004 or something, my birthday is in 1999 and is the release day of Ultimate so that's awesome =p

Are you all trying to drown me in bad opinions? Especially implying Heroes is bad at all?

A snow bunny blade in Xenoblade 2. People were throwing a fit because of her design.
She's obtainable at the game's gacha pool. You could go through an entire playthrough and never get her. Dahlia was one of my last rare blades I got from the pool, and I got her after beating the game. She's got a southern accent in the dub. Gameplay wise, she's not even good. For one, she's a healer and there's already another ice blade healer that is superior to her in every way: Ursula. If Loritha's "You will pay for your insolence" doesn't faze you, then prepare to endure the hardship that is...
Because Ursula's blade quest requires you do a bunch of merc missions. Over and over and over and over and over and over until you get like 99/99/50 stamps from three different categories. Yeah Ursula's quest is a pain, but if you successfully beat it, you got one of the best healers in the game at your disposal. Get her early so you can clear it as soon as you can. Late game becomes a chore.
Oh okay, I've seen those two before. But I've only played a little bit of the game, so that's probably why I didn't know their names

Agree to disagree.

Off the top of my head, IMO:

Generations > Unleashed > Colors > Lost World > Heroes > Forces > Secret Rings > 06.

Really, if the nighttime portions of Unleashed just weren't in the game, it'd be the perfect 3D Sonic game. Those daytime levels were the best.
Which is why people made the "Unleashed Project" for Generations.

Although I think people hated on the Night stages a tad too much, understandable but I think it'd have worked as some side game... Or if it had been Knuckles.

It'd have been Sonic & Knuckles 2, Sonic gets Day styled stages, and Knuckles goes all Streets Of Rage on peoples asses.

If Rare was never bought by Microsoft there's a good chance Banjo and Conker would had became recurring characters in the Donkey Kong franchise and we'd already have Banjo in Smash at this point due to Sakurai having planned him for Melee but by that time Microsoft bought him out.
Not to mention Dk might had a better line up games during the GameCube/GBA era.

My first Nintendo game, which was also the first game I ever owned and wasn't just borrowing from my brother, was Kirby's Block Ball. I used to love level 3's music so much I'd sit around with the Game Boy pressed up against my ear not even playing the game.

Try not to trip over all those low bars.
This is so true that it hurts. Lukewarm on Forces, but not the dumpster fire it could have been (though it had gems such as "Sonic's being brutally tortured"--for kids!). I'm worried the only new songs we'll get will be from Mania (not hating, just not my thing) and Forces, given we may only have 20 tracks, 16-ish returning. Even with Shadow in, as his theme is already in Smash (can we have Sonic's theme "It Doesn't Matter" now then? I'll take either SA or SA2 versions).

I still find it odd that Sakurai hasn’t mentioned the Vault yet, maybe they’re doing something different from trophies?
Right?? Everyone dying for all these newcomers and I'm dying to hear about Stage Builder and hoping it's better than it was in Wii U

There's no such thing as bad opinions, everyone allowed to have their opinions no matter how unexpected they can be and should be accepted.

I honestly kinda liked Sonic Labyrinth as a teen.

Super Mario Bros 3 is still great what the ****. Super Mario games have a tendency to age really well due to being simple platformers and the only one who I'd call outdated is the original one.
We don't talk about Mario Land though.
It’s good as heck, don’t get me wrong, just not my pace. Felt very slow paced and boring...and the controls felt a bit weird.

And we'd probably be getting the Banjo-Threeie and other such future sequels we wanted.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but, I never liked Banjo-Kazooie, even when I was younger. I tried playing it back when it came out, but I guess I was just too in love with Goldeneye, SM64, and OoT to really get into Banjo-Kazooie. I know a lot of people love it, but I never saw the appeal for it

Yeah.. im actually always impressed how well generally nintendo games age.

I still feel that mario 3 is a joy to play, even if is going to turn 30! I think people really should play old atari games, to really grasp what does it means to age terrible.

A good example can be Castlevania adventure, Castlevania adventure 2 and castlevania legends on teh original gameboy. The first was proabbly very impressive for its age, but developers were still understanding how the hell develop for a portable with very limited power, so it have aged terrible and messy.

Castlevania adventure 2 on the other hand was designed with teh gameboy in mind, with levels with clear distinctions withouth much detail, tight controls, more tight levels with less walking and an overall lenght that while looking massive, was still reasonable scoped for a gameboy playthrough. And honestly is a great game to play even today... something that not much Gameboy plataformers can boast.
And then Castlevania legends happened with another team that had to learn how to develop for teh gameboy, and they dived deep into the same problems that Castlevania Adventure 1 had.

The Link example doesn’t even make sense because Smash is crossover game featuring characters from many different genres. DOOM would represent FPS, and it’s status as the pioneer of the genre would give Doomguy the “merit” to be that representative.

Also, what exactly “merits” playability? From Sakurai’s mouth we know they must carry “gaming history” aka be iconic. I think DOOM fits that bill nicely. Is it Nintendo history? Because again, every single DOOM game except for one is on Nintendo. What more does it need to do?
DOOM representing first person shooters isn’t enough. What relationship does Nintendo have with FPS games? Outside of 3rd party relations not much. It’s a genre mostly foreign to Nintendo IPs until Metroid Prime. Splatoon is basically Nintendo’s own take on a shooter game. So take that in mind. DOOM isn’t so huge to Nintendo that it warrants a character because of its legacy. There are far bigger 3rd party potentials that would go first.

How is Forces not better than Heroes? I get that this ain’t a Sonic forum but come on, Forces was ok but could’ve been better.

And yes, Smash 4 is bland, regardless of its gameplay and fixes.

I think the words you're looking for are 'having different opinions than you' or 'having unpopular opinions'. There's nothing wrong with having those opinions

I still think we're getting 2 more smash directs, whether or not that means more characters. There's still so much to go over. We still need to see events, all star, new and returning stadium modes, trophies, online, stage builder, how we unlock characters, the rest of the assist trophies, the rest of the pokeball pokemon, the rest of the stages, the rest of the characters, and of course spirits mode, which will probably take a lot of time on its own. Not to mention other changes like young link and Robin final smashes as well as how miis work now. And that's just the stuff we pretty much know of. I bet Sakurai still has some surprises too. Maybe smash run is back, or there could be other new stuff to go over. We might get announcement of dlc too. I can't imagine this will all be in 1 direct. I really think the new tag being taken down is for a full smash direct, and that there will still be another one in November. Even if that means we have a direct with no character reveals.

I mean ZSS had her two skimpy outfits in For, if anything Pyra may just get some anatomy changes like the former did for Ultimate.

Also for those calling Rex's design generic:
You haven't seen his Master Driver armour.
Okay, that armor is pretty dope actually.

Right?? Everyone dying for all these newcomers and I'm dying to hear about Stage Builder and hoping it's better than it was in Wii U
And I thought I was a dreamer... If there's anything constant in Smash, is that Stage Builder is more underwhelming than its potential. Would be great if it had a Mario Maker like UI design, but I feel like it might be too hopeful. And yeah, I don't feel like any of these things would have suited the August Direct, I feel like if we get information it'll be in the final Direct or a 50-fact extravaganza type thing. Some of the modes are too inside baseball for casual Smash fans (which is how many non-fans felt watching E3, so it has to be handled delicately).

Did people really say Smash 4 was bland? It is not. It is my favorite Smash Bros. game.

To me, Smash is primarily about its roster, and Smash 4 had the best roster (e.g. Mario, Sonic, Megaman, Pac-Man--before Ultimate, obviously), but some of the worst modes. Hopefully Ultimate finds that balance, and so far it's looking good. In terms of Smash games I've played 4 > Brawl > 64 (and 64 was awesome!).

As for Mario, as a kid I always thought SMB3 felt like a Mario game, whereas World felt different. Food related worlds? Wha? Why does Mario have a cape instead of a Tanooki Suit? But it has some of the most interesting elements, gaming wise. So I consider SMB3 the best Mario game, while World was the best (2D) game in general. Paradoxical, but they're both the best for different reasons.

I don't think every Smash character is iconic, especially some of the newer characters such as Robin or Corrin. Yes, most of the Smash64 characters are iconic, but I think a lot of other characters after 64 are not very iconic. I could be wrong though

I think whatever the blog and playlist is pointing towards is an actual direct instead of a reveal.
They usually plan this stuff ahead of time and are ready to announce a character, so I feel they would have already announced the character by now if it was just a reveal.

I honestly don’t remember what the first Nintendo game I played was since my older siblings had a SNES so we had plenty of Nintendo games to play, of course. I remember playing DKC 1-3, Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario All Stars, Mario World and plenty of others before I even started kindergarten.

EDIT: speaking of Mario All Stars, I think I had a special cartridge or something because I could cycle through all the power ups in Super Mario Bros 3 by pressing the select button.

While not the best, Sonic Heroes is okay in my book. A little slippery along with some wonky level design, but other than that a decently fun time.

Where were people saying Smash 4 was bland? I didn't see any posts like that. I personally never thought it was bland: My issues with Wii U come from lack of solid single player content and any engaging content outside of the core Smash mode. Online was kind of a bummer as well.

SMB3 is a fantastic gem, I love it to pieces. I should really get around to finishing both it and SMW one day...

Even with Shadow in, as his theme is already in Smash (can we have Sonic's theme "It Doesn't Matter" now then? I'll take either SA or SA2 versions).
We don't actually have Shadow's theme in Smash. Or any of his theme's in Smash. Live and Learn was not Shadow's theme, it was just the main theme of the game. Themes like Throw It All Away, I Am All Of Me, All Hail Shadow, and probably This Machine would all count specifically as Shadow themes.
