Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Can’t we all be friends?

View attachment 167996

These guys get along just fine. Though people have been skeptical of Elma, I think this can very well happen in Smash too...

Some of you guys have been arguing about Xenoblade 1 and 2, yet here we are, where Rex is best friends with Shulk now... and Elma.
I forget Rex is a legit ******.

I agree. Sonic Forces as decent.

Better than Unleashed, Lost World, Heroes and 06
I personally liked Unleashed to an extent, but Lost World is probably the only Sonic game to actually offend my very being.

It was just really not my thing.
I don't think Smash 4 was bad. I enjoyed it a lot.
Smash 4's problem is more so changing things that didn't need changing and adding things that didn't need to be there.

I wouldn't go as far to say it's the worst Smash game. I can't say that about a game with Cloud ****ing Strife.

Regarding the discussion over XC2 designs Pyra looks really similar to Awakening Celica and Mythra looks very similar to the main character from Expelled from Paradise. Of course, given they were all designed by the same artist, I'm not surprised.

That's the thing, I enjoyed it too! But it has poorly aged and doesn't really hold a candle compared to every other Smash game.
Well, agree to disagree. I think my least favorite Smash game is probably Melee.

If there really is a character reveal soon, I think they're just gonna pull a :ultlucina::ultrobin:ultfalcon: and just have a small steam with only the trailer. I really don't see a bigger Smash direct until late November, and certainly not another Nintendo Direct so soon.
The thing is, I just don't 'think' there's enough characters left.

Okay let's say it's Incineroar/whoever... why would they NOT save them for the November Direct unless there's a whole bunch more characters we don't know about?

If it's Ken....I mean, I 'guess'...? But I can't imagine an Echo getting shown off alone.

Robin/Lucina worked because we still had Shulk, Bowser Jr, Duck Hunt and a handful of secrets left.

I cannot imagine us having more than 4 characters left.

I can't tell if you're trying to be provocative to try and change the topic or if you're actually serious here...

:ohwell:
To be fair, I kinda had a feeling we might be off-topic and not talk about Smash, so I figured I'd swerve to be safe. Don't get me wrong, I will appreciate the stuff Smash Wii U has done, like 8-Player Smash and some of the great stages we got, and ESPECIALLY the roster. Unfortunately, those are really the only good things I can say about Smash Wii U. :/

The stage builder was somehow worse than Brawl's builder, the music is alright at best, a lot of questionable choices for the stage roster list - like Onett being the only Mother stage - the UI looking horrendous, I can go on. However, I feel Smash 3DS is absolutely fantastic. Comparing the two is like night and day, really. I'm glad, though, that Ultimate seems to be correcting a lot of my criticisms of Wii U, so I'm pretty hopeful!

Hmm, let me try that. *ahem*

Hey! Everyone! I think Brawl is better than Melee!
Depends on what you're looking for.

If you're looking for a competitive fighting game, Brawl ain't that.

If you're looking for super fun Nintendo crossover single player and one of the best party games Nintendo has ever made, Brawl fits that perfectly IMO. Then again, my Smash tastes are a little weird, as I legitimately believe Smash 3DS was better than Smash Wii U.

Trails in the Sky's 3 games are on steam as are the first 2 Cold Steel ones yes, but theres others to the story that are kind of important too, that I hope manage to get localization even before Cold Steel 3 & 4, because the 2 Crossbell games Zero & AO are very important contexually x.x

Which is why theres of course huge effort fan translations in the works for those 2.
oh boy

Also Brawl doesn't feel that good to play.

Nah, you're not alone. I also prefer Brawl over Melee, as well as the 3DS version of Smash 4 over the Wii U version.

Agree to disagree.

Off the top of my head, IMO:

Generations > Unleashed > Colors > Lost World > Heroes > Forces > Secret Rings > 06.

Really, if the nighttime portions of Unleashed just weren't in the game, it'd be the perfect 3D Sonic game. Those daytime levels were the best.

I would bet on a DLC character or two being shown in a final Direct.

Can you explain how its aged poorly? I'm not trying to trigger a debate (since Smash 4 is my least fave, I'm not defending it). Its just I quit Smash 4 barely a year into its release, so as far as I'm concern, it wasn't for me from the get-go. So what else made the game objectively worse over time? I abandoned it too soon to know how it didn't hold up with age.

Wii U is the best Smash game i've played.

Because it's the only Smash game i've played :p.
HUH?! Son, I will buy you a Wii and Brawl at the moment, tell me the coordinates and I'll have a plane come drop by with a care package.

But for real, if that's the case, you have SO MUCH content you've never played before. Just remember Shadow Moses Island = best stage.

To be honest, I pretty much love Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4. I like all three, and Ultimate's not even out yet, and already it's my favorite. There is no such thing a perfect series, but Smash is closest thing I think we'll get to one.

I expect the same, but the issue still arises.

If Incineroar/whoever gets shown off, there has to be a newcomer we don't know about in this supposed final Direct, since I legit cannot see them just being like "Okay here's Ken and the DLC dudes."

If Ken gets shown off.........alright? I don't think they'd show off an Echo on their own, even if it's Ken.

I just feel like they'd be better off to save what they have for November instead of just "Here's a guy, see more in Novemberrrrrrrrrrrr~"

At the very least, Smash 4 was way better than 64.

I think Smash 4 gets a lot of unnecessary crap from the fanbase. Maybe being split up between a handheld and a very unpopular console didn't help it age well, but it still did a lot of things better than its predecessors. The graphics were fantastic, it got more newcomers than any other Smash game, it introduced us to Omega forms for all stages, and the new online made Brawl's look like a joke (not exactly a huge accomplishment, but still).

Unfortunately, because Ultimate borrows nearly every aspect of Smash 4, I feel like it's going to completely overshadow the latter. A little unfair if you ask me.

3DS is the best Smash game imo

...other than the fact it's on the 3DS.

I like that it knew it couldn't be this huge game that was bigger than it's predecessor and instead went for higher quality content as a result. I've never been a fan of 'more for the sake of more'.

I miss Smash Run.

That's another reason i'm so excited for Utimate. For a lot of people they're old mains are returning, but for me it's like six new characters in addition to the new characters!

Well, Ultimate, for one. Someone else said it before, but the game introduced and removed a lot of stuff that sometimes shouldn't have. Comparing Brawl's stage builder to Smash 4's, you can easily see where some faults lie, a lot of questionable choices for the stage roster - I'm mainly looking at it from what did these games have to bring to the table and what they've done for the franchise, and Smash Wii U really didn't do a good job.

Welp--since there's a major debate going on about Xenoblade, I'm guessing I haven't missed any big news/speculation today? Love the series as an outsider, hope it's in, but... gotta find something Smash related to talk about...

Welp, anyways, moving the conversation, I feel like a November Direct is more plasuble than an October one.
These are my feelings. I do believe, given the NEW tag and playlist update we'll be getting a new character(s) within two weeks. But early November, before big potential leaks, feels best as they'll want to have the final push as close as possible to release.

Here are my current predictions:

October: Incineroar around a Pokemon Direct, Isaac/Felix (in a Robin/Lucina standalone reveal)
November: Smash Direct where Banjo & Kazooie starts off, Shadow and Ken echoes, Geno is the grand finale.

Stages:
104. Sun and Moon stage (Incineroar playable)
105. Golden Sun stage (Isaac/Felix playable)
106. Banjo-Kazooie stage (Banjo & Kazooie playable)
107. Monster Hunter stage (Rathalos assist)
108. Minecraft stage (Creeper assist)

Trying to discuss something different. I had a shower thought, trying to imagine what the current Smash roster would look like if Microsoft never bought Rareware. Off the top of my head, we would probably have:
-Banjo-Kazooie obviously
-Gruntilda
-Conker
-Rash, Zitz and Pimple
-Jago
-Glacius
-Spinal
-Riptor (for Yoshi v Riptor)
-Joanna Dark
-Junno
-Maybe a Viva Piñata character if that game would have been made anyway.

And I unironically like 64. Seriously though, its feel is unique compared to what followed afterwards. Every character there looked like they would fit in Mario 64, or were pulled out of N64 games.

Maybe Juno and Vela as an Ice Climbers-esque duo.

Also, Sabreman as the WTF character.

You cannot die without playing Subspace Emissary at least once. This is still a very hype scene for me in gaming:

I'm not judging the core gameplay, but in Smash 4, the quest of collecting all the Mii hats was atrocious (both versions)

i care way more about game engine than anything so it's melee > 4 > 64 > brawl for me. i don't like playing 64 very much but i appreciate it a lot more than brawl. please bring back ground-to-air momentum. thank you

I'm actually playing it on my Switch, and my god. That game is actual fire, and for an NES game? That's insane. 3's even better than Super Mario Bros. 2!
i am joking of course because Super Mario Bros. 2 will always be GOTY every year

Not gonna lie. I'd be satisfied with that.

While I Medusa and Black Shadow wouldn't make it. It'd be happy enough with Banjo.
