Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

So what do you guys think of the Playlist theory? Do you think we'll get a Smash Direct or something along those lines soon?

I'm pretty sure the first Nintendo game I played was Super Mario All Stars, that's how I ended up loving Super Mario 3(though I actually prefer the GBA version) but Sonic 2 was my first game I played.

We don't actually have Shadow's theme in Smash. Or any of his theme's in Smash. Live and Learn was not Shadow's theme, it was just the main theme of the game. Themes like Throw It All Away, I Am All Of Me, All Hail Shadow, and probably This Machine would all count specifically as Shadow themes.
This Machine is a great song and I hope we see that song in Smash (if Shadow gets in, and even if he doesn't get in). Honestly I think Heroes had the best Sonic songs ever and I'd love for any or all of the Heroes songs to be in Smash (though that probably won't happen)

If Rare had remained at Nintendo?

Banjo, Conker, Joanna Dark, etc they would have all graduated to gaming icons or at the very least Nintendo icons.

As they are now they're all cool characters of yesteryear that people remember fondly, but icons? No.

Who knows the 3 of them might have even been additions to the Smash roster in Brawl, Wii U/3DS and Ultimate.

Sonic Colors.

That is all.
Sonic Colors is probably my all time favorite Sonic game and IMO probably where the series peaked. Easily my favorite OST out of the series as well.

Sega, whoever made that game, please bring them back and give them total control over everything Sonic. Please.

Ultimately us as a human race will never deserve how amazing Punch-Out!! for the Wii was, Little Mac's inclusion in Smash just because of that game is more than justified.

I really wished Smash 4 capitalized on that game's content, and even more so with Super Punch-Out!!.
You're telling me, but at least he did come with the boxing ring stage. That, to me, is one of 4's most important contributions.

Smash favorites order?

Brawl > 3DS > Melee > WiiU
(I never played 64, but it'd be last on my list.)

Fite me, I'm a super casual so Brawl was great. Plus I think it had the best roster up to now. Sm4sh's newcomers were a bit too gimmicky for me and most I didn't know, so they didn't impress me. Bonus points to 3DS just for Smash Run though - the fact that the WiiU version had nothing but good graphics (which let you see how much they didn't care about giving the Zelda cast non-derpy models) going for it was just bad.

But on a larger note, N64 was my first Nintendo console - I never had a (S)NES. My first console was a Genesis with Sonic 2, and I'm starting to get a major nostalgia attack for that game. I heard that it's releasing in some compilation for the Switch? Hope so... and I really hope the character who debuted there ends up playable in Smash...

To weigh in on the best version debate:
Competitive merit: melee > 4 > 64 > brawl
For fun merit: brawl > 4 > 64 > melee

Melee is great for competitive but idk, to me it feels the worst in terms of casual play. Brawl is unquestionably the worst in terms of competitive merit (tripping and Meta Knight, nuff said), but it's the version I probably have the most fond memories with in terms of just having fun. I expect ultimate to eclipse 4 and maybe even brawl in terms of for fun, idk if it can surpass melee in competitive though. From what I've seen it'd look to be a bit better than 4 in that sense.

Okay folks, let old man snap tell you why Sonic Heroes is one of the best 3D Sonic games and a fantastic game in general.

Gameplay is quick and snappy with levels that are designed for a nice arcade style speed through.
You have several abilities that are all actually used and make you feel powerful.
Character interaction is done spectacularly and seemlessly though gameplay giving a much needed boost to lore, personality and character relationships, while also keeping the story simple to understand.
Music is S+.
It actually makes you feel fast in a way where you have full control.
Each character actually has differently made levels meaning that each team focuses on a different style or level of gameplay.

I love Heroes. It isn't perfect but it's fantastic.

Sonic Colors.

That is all.
If only Sega continued to build off Colors/Generations instead of making a Mario Galaxy ripoff and then whatever Boom was. Peak Sonic right there.

So what do you guys think of the Playlist theory? Do you think we'll get a Smash Direct or something along those lines soon?
I think probably a Robin/Lucina-like reveal is likely next week. Not a sure thing, but likely. Probably one character, maybe an echo too.

Also, what’s this playlist theory thing?
Basically the Japanese playlist for the trailers for the Smash Bros characters was updated three days ago, and this happened about ten days before the Smash Direct, and again ten days before the Nintendo Direct, so it may hint at either a new Direct soon or a new character reveal soon

The Japanese character trailer playlist updated about 3 days ago yet there were no apparent changes, meaning they may have added some video(s) that we can't see in preparation for one or more character reveals.

The same thing happened about a week before Isabelle (her original planned reveal date of Sept. 6) and the August direct.

Lost World was a good game, but it was clear it was the experimental game. That game was the first sign that Sonic Team needed a break from making Sonic games. They wanted to make something else.

First Nintendo game: Super Mario Bros 3
Favorite console of all time: PSP
Favorite Smash game: 64
First Nintendo game: Super Mario Bros
Favorite console: Nostalgic wise, N64. Objectively, Switch.
Favorite Smash game: Smash 4

I don't think every Smash character is iconic, especially some of the newer characters such as Robin or Corrin. Yes, most of the Smash64 characters are iconic, but I think a lot of other characters after 64 are not very iconic. I could be wrong though
He said that about third party characters, whereas it's more lenient for Nintendo characters. Likewise, while Bayonetta doesn't really carry gaming history, she's essentially an honorary Nintendo character. I feel the same way about third party Nintendo characters, like Banjo & Kazooie and Geno, having the edge because of their history with Nintendo. However, "gaming history" is subjective, and so we can't be certain which ones Sakurai thinks fits that bill.

You're right--I listened to SA2's playlist all the time as a kid, and always associated Live and Learn with Shadow--listening to it, I remember it, but not fondly, which is perhaps why I associated that way. Makes sense now--the game's themes are in, but not particular character themes.

I agree 100%. I had the most fun with 64 and Brawl, but that's probably because I'm a casual and not a competitive player, and that probably explains why Melee is my least favorite in the series.

Forces has nothing really, it's everything wrong with the series cranked up to 12. People are way too hard on the nighttime stages.
I feel if Unleashed night time stages were in a seperate game from a different series, people would enjoy them as a fun, seperate game. Unleashed nighttimes were distinctly NOT representative of the sonic formula and a screeching halt from the epic, fast-paced daytime stages - and that's why I think people hate on them so much.

In a vaccuum, they're not bad stages at all. But they're terrible Sonic stages.

Speaking of unleashed, to bring up a different subject...I'm really sad that the sonic movie looks so goddamn awful. A good sonic movie would be the quality of Sonic unleashed's opening cutscene but a movie. Instant classic. Instead, we're seemingly getting a feel-good, generic "POWAH OF FRIENSHIP" like movie that is looking more and more like the Super Mario Bros. movie every day in terms of how unrelated and detached it is from the source material.

Why did Sony have to get their grimy hands on that project, and why can't we ever get a good game movie... :(

The hell you just say?
It feels like the majority of characters have so many anime stereotypes placed on them. Maybe it’s just me.
And pretty much every set of episodes is “Students Train and then Villians Attack” Repeat. I needed to get that off my chest. Maybe I’m not getting it?

I might be interested for the Nintendo characters but I don't really care too much for the Shonen characters(I would love to have Arale Norimaki from Dr Slump though) I rather Nintendo face something like Marvel comics or maybe Disney cartoons.

Or Skull Kid, with Impa as a Sheik Echo (it's not like Lucina was a Robin echo :p). Honestly I'm down for anyone. Issac and Felix would be mad dope

My biggest issues with it were probably the parkour system and physics. Parkour was weird. Sometimes it was great, sometimes it was the worst, it was really picky about where it wanted to work and felt super tacked on IMO. Plus, the physics in the game period just felt...off. A lot of the times I died, I never really felt like it was my fault, especially in the wonky 2D sections.

I also didn't really like the way they used the Wisps. Some of them felt really pointless (the rhythm one and the gravity one), or just poorly designed (Rocket).

I'm hoping its Medusa as a single reveal. Doubt it but I'm still hopeful.

Who knows maybe if lucky a triple reveal of her, Skull Kid and Shadow but that's a stretch.

Good is a strong word to describe Lost Word with, IMO. Certainly had some interesting ideas, though the execution was lacking. I just don't understand why Team Sonic doesn't understand when people play Sonic games they wanna run fast

I feel the same way. That being said, given Isabelle's announcement and Sakurai's comments, I've become less certain if Isaac would get an echo, or even be in at all. I hope so--it's the first party version of Simon, where a newcomer/echo combo fits well. I also like both of their character designs, and if there's a villain/anti-hero theme, it fits nicely.

Also when making my last predictions post, I noticed the connection between Golden Sun and Sun and Moon, both of which I optimistically predicted for October. It's a nice coincidence.

Lost world was fun but the story and writing were amazingly bad. I feel the game itself got way too much hate for what it was, although I feel the overall community perception of it was that it's ok.

Forces, on the other hand, I liked the story/writing/atmosphere/direction generally speaking (though there are definitely parts that could be better, like the inexplicable Sonic-tortured-except-not-really bit), but the gameplay was way too short to really be very enjoyable. I got what I could out of it and I liked trying to speedrun stages for a time, but Forces could have been so much better.

Oh well. At least you always get kickass music with Sonic games ;):estatic:
