You don't need to be a leaker to know Isabelle's coming. Guessing when, that's more specific, but do-able.

I gotta ask, why would Geno be dropped out of him or Banjo?

Personally I think it's because he's much more well known/adored outside of the smash community. If Vergeben is right and Minecraft content is present, I can't see a world in which Sakurai lets them go without getting Banjo. I'd argue to the extent that he'd be willing to give up Geno to ensure an N64 icon finally gets some representation. In terms of satisfying the most people, Banjo wins, and for big name characters like this I think Sakurai considers that a priority.

Look at all the third parties he's chosen, they're all either huge in gaming/the public or big on Nintendo (Bayonetta).

There's the fact its in the end Square Enix's decision in using Geno. If they say no then that is that.

Also all that was said about Minecraft was there it was going to be representation. For all we know it could be through an assist trophy or stage.

I was planning to get more into Punch-Out!!(I played the first one a bit), Castlevania(see Punch-Out!!) and Bayonetta.

And I'd like to see more Tekken content since it's my favorite fighting series and Tekken 3 was the first game I remember playing.

My heart. Granted I like Elma. And I don't care for Isaac. And Tails is awesome. So I guess it's more "oh my Geno-liking heart"

Anyways, my reasoning is because we really have been ignoring the more recent characters with this speculation so far, or at least I admit I have. Elma would be a new addition for a series that is gaining traction. I believe Vergeben when he says we are getting another SE rep (hence why I take back what I said about Geno) and a gen 7 Pokemon. Four newcomers at this point are the absolute max that I see given what time we have left. (Basically two months as I see it since I'm not expecting another direct in September.) Tails I'm hopping on the Mii costume train for. So what I feel we are looking at now is:
Incineroar/someother gen 7
Elma
Geno
Tails

Isaac and Skull Kid feel like the casualties today for me. Skull Kid might just be a boss character.

Pokemon. Without a doubt, my favorite video game series of all time. Hands down. No question.

I also love me some Splatoon, Kirby, and Mario. I've recently gotten into the original Donkey Kong Country and Breath of the Wild.

Y'know, we've gotten to such a point in time where Smash has become chock-full of fanservice, thanks in part to fan-favorites such as K. Rool, Ridley, Isabelle, and more joining the roster.

At this point, I personally wouldn't be against it if Goku managed to make it in some form (and yes, for once I do mean Dragon Ball Goku, deck me in the schnoz if you have to). I'm willing to bet that there's a ton of non-ironic fans out there, not just in Latin America, but globally as well. Either my recent Dragon Ball binge is driving me to insanity, or Smash has become so exceedingly chock-full of fanservice that the original Super Saiyan may actually be a possibility.

Bonus points if Vegeta's an echo.

Well my three favorite series in Smash are Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Metal Gear Solid.
Xenoblade also looks like it has some really strong potential, and Mega Man, Castlevania, and Bayonetta are all fun as well.

I really want to try to get into the Kirby series right now, but I'm stuck on which game I should play first.

If the wanted to save a character reveal for October to go with Halloween, I seriously think they would have done that for Simon, if not just because of his stage.

Skull Kid would be fitting but let's be real, Simon would be even more so.

It's not that we've been ignoring more recent characters, it's that the winds of Smash have been blowing classic-ward with a few exceptions ( ).

People have been speculating Elma, "G7 Pokémon" and the like since the beginning of this speculation period.

However, I think the classic characters are being relegated to the Directs where the hardcore fans (i.e. us) are more likely to appreciate them (i.e. E3 and the Smash Directs).

Isabelle makes perfect sense for a general direct, even if we didn't specifically see her coming.

We could still get Isaac, Skull Kid and Geno in the next Smash Direct (and there will be a next one); in fact, I'd even go so far as to say that Isaac and Skull Kid will be the characters revealed in the next Smash Direct.

At least, if we don't get Dante from the leak, we have enough characters left to go into a final Smash direct in November to reveal them.

Incineroar as the headliner, Ken in the middle with any remaining echos, and Geno as the clincher.

I just don't know if this community can go 2 more months with no news.
