So when do you think that someone should formally retire from smash?
Or rather, at what point should they just stop playing and focus on other things?

I mean, its just sometimes I see like 30 year old smashers at tournies, and Im thinking too myself, "Does this guy really belong here?"

So what are your thoughts?

No one person has the right to say anyone is too old to play games.

If they really like the game and enjoy attending then who cares if they are 13 or 30?

Maybe I was too demanding. Power to those who can still pick up a controller and enjoy a game, but I always pictured smash as a college student-age type of game.
I mean maybe I am ignorant to the fact that there are older people who play smash, but I always imagined that one would retire in their mid-twenties, you know, so that they can pursue careers and stuff.

Most people stop playing alot when they are out of college, but some still show up, just not as frequently.

Smashing is a hobby. Telling someone they are TOO old for smash is like telling someone they are too old to watch professional football or too old to...whatever unusual hobbies that don't demand much(if any) physical ability.

As for focusing on other things, I'm sure anyone from ages 7-100 SHOULD be focusing on OTHER things, EVERY smasher should be doing something OTHER than smashing but its a hobby. asdasdasdasas anyway my rant has no point. just throwing out an endless opinion.

Actually when I was in England last winter, my friend showed my nanny Brawl.

She didn't understand it at first, but once she got it she said "I really like it, lovely little game!"

Seriously, I did not expect her to say that. :dizzy:

You get bored of it I guess. It seems like once you graduate from college, you grow away from smash. From what I've seen in my community anyways.

Though everyone who's "retired" still comes to tourneys sometimes and almost always keeps smash as a side hobby. No one, as far as I recall, in my community has dropped smash completely.

I'd imagine once I grow tired of playing Smash, I'd try my hand at organizing bigger tournaments.

...

Maybe.

I retired from Smash towards the end of college. I was 24-25 I think. I still make a rare appearance at a regional tourny, but that's it.

I usually picture a smasher to be no more then 25, but yea, the average gamer is like over 30. You're never too old for Smash.

ololol I get that alot XD

Hmm, pretty sure retirements are specifically defined for jobs only, which Smash is NOT a job
Lol, she is an epic fail of course. She just plays with my little cousin XD.

Id stop playing when Im sick of the game (never)
You wont get sick of a game until you get sick of it, therefore your (never) comment will probably end up false. :)

Ooh~! Agreed! Never too old for Smash! I started player it since when I was a kid with my 64-- and I'll be 18 soon, and I hope to keep playing even if I'm a 35 year old woman! But it would be interesting to see a senior citizen at a tournament!

Well, if you think about it, seniors have fun doing what they did when they were kids. I really don't think the things you enjoy change as you get older... Middle aged people argue about the same things as kids.

If you think about it, today's seniors never had videogames. I'm pretty sure by the time we're all decrepit old people, we will still be on our computers.

This topic comes up frequently on this forum, and it annoys me...

Whether it's Smash or video games in general, there should be no "retirement" age. I realize we haven't yet gotten to the point where most older adults had video games when they were younger, but that doesn't mean "Once you turn 20 you're not allowed to play video games anymore". Yeah, you've got a career when you're older, but it's not honestly as if you have endless free time when you're still in school either. Just because you're now making your own living doesn't mean video games are/should be prohibited. It's just that being a gamer is fairly socially unacceptable even as a teenager (well, unless you're playing Wii Sports/Tetris), so it's even more socially unacceptable to legitimately play video games when you're out of school. And people are still falling for society's stupid restrictions.

I've got a piece of advice for you: if you really care what society tells you is acceptable and not, you should probably leave this forum now considering it's really not socially acceptable to be a regular on a video game forum and play a video game competitively.

If you don't, then quit playing Smash/video games when you're bored of them and not a moment sooner.

Ah!! So true!! Then I can't wait to be old and play video games still!

Naaah, you don't have to apologize, I just get super-passionate about things like this sometimes. Also, to be fair, I was a little stressed last night.

My opinion is no different, of course, just not so...for lack of a better word, passionate.

THIS

I don't mind if there's younger people here and there, but it would suck if I was like 7 years older than everyone else at a tournament

Actually, at a tournament I was at once there was in fact a senior citizen there. She was 70+ and was very good at it. She didn't win the tournament but she was good, evenly matched with me.

I believe that there isn't an age to quit smashing. In truth the age to quit is when you just can't find the fun in it anymore.

no way, senior smash
Yes way.

So yesterday I got my mom to try smash as an experiment. She really enjoyed herself and after three or four rounds against me I had her try against computers. She lost to level 7 and beat 6 and below. *Shrugs* I just wanted to see what would happen.
