Game Freak has got their game creation license revoked, and instead of consulting another studio in Nintendo to design the next game in the series, they've vchosen the users of Smashboards to create the next game in the series. New Pokemon, Trainers, Gyms, the whole package.

How does this thread work?

Similar to the other game creation threads, I will give a prompt that anyone can respond to, say "create a two-stage poison type". Rounds will typically go for a bit longer in this game, as unlike in the other projects we are creating brand new things, instead of applying pre-existing concepts to a game. When submitting a Pokemon, you can draw a submission, but that isn't necessary. What is necessary is name, type, and a brief summary of the pokemon's design. After a while, we will vote on which of the submitted things should win. We will handle ties on a case-by-case basis, from accepting both to doing a re-count.

Anyways, here's what we have so far.

Welcome to the Iroan region! Based on Greece, this archipelago has a rich history and an abundance of Pokemon found nowhere else! This region's professor, Professor Laurel, is extremely new to this, but that hasn't stopped her from giving a pair of trainers pokedexes and making them catch em' all.

Val by Paraster Paraster
  • Name origin: derived from multiple names that mean "strong" or "healthy."
  • Val is a Fighting-type Gym leader who seeks strength of both mind and body. Most of their time is spent either working out, training their Pokemon, or studying at the Laograf Library. Val tends to be very stoic at first, but they open up more to people who can best them, at which point they can start to talk a bit too much about everything that interests them.
  • Val's skin tone is similar to Ilima's from Sun/Moon. Their attire is similar to Maylene from Diamond/Pearl, but with a yellow-and-black color scheme, black sandals, and no gloves. They have red hair (literal red, not ginger) done in a short braided ponytail. They have visibly toned muscles.

Philosopher by Venus of the Desert Bloom Venus of the Desert Bloom

The Philosopher is a deep thinker who considers the meaning of life within the Pokemon world and Pokemon and human interactions. The Philosopher is keen on debating the human existence and the impact of Pokemon on humanity. Typically, Philosophers utilize Psychic, Fairy, and Normal-types but, on occassion, Dark-types to reflect the dark nature of humanity. They can be spotted by sporting a shaggy white hair and beard along with a more modernized toga robe. They typically carry a dusty book full of their musings and theories. How they speak can be perplexing due to their academic backgrounds and may cite excerpts from historically relevant books.

Librarian by KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 :

The Librarian archetype is interesting in that they tend to use Pokemon that have a connection to the past or ancient ruins (Pokemon like Golurk, for instance.) Furthermore, they have a tendency to use a lot more status effect moves as opposed to going for direct damage, implying a more intelligent but less directly offensive playstyle.

In terms of appearance, I imagine them having a sort of "light academia" look - light but smart clothes, such as cardigans, shirts, ties, and some nice round glasses. They tend to carry around books with them, which they take a look at when battling (implying that they're taking hints from said book during battle.)

Thalassa Town (by Venus of the Desert Bloom Venus of the Desert Bloom :
A costal town located near a cliff that overlooks the Progonoss Sea. It’s a pleasant town with white houses, balconies, arbors, and cobble streets with a fountain in the middle. It’s here that several Pokemon Trainers will set forth in their journey to become the greatest Pokémon master of them all! The towns motto is “Where the sea meets, all will become one.” Thalassa Town means “sea”.

Route 1 (by Venus of the Desert Bloom Venus of the Desert Bloom ):
This will have your typical low level pokémon including Pidgey, Sentret, Wurmple, and other Pokemon as it winds down to the beach below. As you get closer to the beach, players may come into contact with Sandyghast, Snadshrew, and Wingull. A lucky trainer may even find the regional variant, Ironian Bunnelby. This makes this route very diversified from when your leave Thalassa Town. It is here at the Pokemon professor has their laboratory.

Laograf Town (by Paraster Paraster ):
  • Name origin: from "laografía," romanization of λαογραφία - "folklore").
  • Most known for its large library, a nexus of Ioran's history. The town has a very modern aesthetic for someplace as small as it is, but the library's architecture remains a relic of the past. There is a theme of "balance" here--between past and present, between body and mind (see below), and potentially more (depending on the story).
Route 2 by Venus of the Desert Bloom Venus of the Desert Bloom :

Route 2: The first town that players set off on during their first pokémon journey is nestled on an overhanging cliff plateau with stunning views of the sapphire-like ocean below. As a symbolic meaning to start ones journey, the first route will dive down to the beaches below. This route is a slope with a mixture of grasses, rock, and dirt that snakes it’s way down while hugging the cliff face. As the route gets closer to the beachfront, the Rocky and slightly grassy terrain gives way to beach grasses and hill-line dunes before spilling out into Amolofos Beach. This is a stunning beach full of dunes, beach grass, and palm trees that end into the sapphire surf. There exists a boardwalk to navigate these dunes and grasses with are apart of route 2 but empties into the beach. Low level Pokémon can be found here and, during the first trip, players won’t encounter other trainers but a return trip will see an influx of new trainers. If my concept gets selected, I would love to see what kind of Pokémon we could populate it.

Erinni Town by Venus of the Desert Bloom Venus of the Desert Bloom
This peaceful town situated along the coast is tucked amongst sun-dyed cliffs. This town is famous for its hot springs, so much so that tourists from Kalos and Galar will come here just to experience them! Being so close to the ocean and this towns affinity for water, Wingull and Pelipper can be found here. Especially Wingull. They are a nuisance but people have learned to use them to find schools of fish.

Xirozylo Forest by Venus of the Desert Bloom Venus of the Desert Bloom (With additional notes)
Thalassa Town is based on Laurium, Attica. This town is a coastal one with a maritime tradition.
Laograf Town would be based on a townified version of “Archaeological Site of Brauron“ which could also serve as a place to come back to for our fossils.
I don’t think River Wheald would be a good early location due to the presence of Ghost pokemon. That being said, I think the Ladon River is a good source of inspiration.

As for a forest, mine is based off of Plátanos Varybobi which is a mountain forest overlooking Athens. This would serve also in Pokémon Marble and Bronze as it would look over the largest city in Ironia. I think we would have to include a route to get to there form Laograf Town or even a cable car to get up to it. It’s an alpine forest with moderately forested dry forest with trees suited for a dry environment. This forest is called Xirozlyo Forest (modified version for Xiróxylo or “dry wood” in Greek. Unlike most forests in Pokémon, that forest wouldn’t be populated with bug pokémon but lots of grass, flying, ground, and rock types due to its more higher elevation and dryer location.

River Wheild (by Paraster Paraster )
Inspired by the mythological River Styx ("Wheild" is based on "weald"--I am open to alternate names). It is a haunted river that flows through an underground cave and an overgrown grove that little sunlight reaches. May allow for Ghost-type Pokemon to gain Water-type regional variants, or vice versa.

Lost Lunch
It also has a signature attacked called Lost Lunch where a strike that lands a critical hit on the opponent causes any held berry or food to be "spat up" which results in the Wingfull/Pelliper eating it and gaining its affects. (Iroan Wingull/Pelipper

It's signature ability is Opportunistic where it can steal any item used for the first time in the match by the player. (Iroan Wingull/Pelipper)
Here's our discord: https://discord.gg/EEsVkSxXcD. It's also used for the Smash Infinite project.

JOB #1: CHOOSE WHAT OUR REGION IS BASED ON

Before we can start making Pokemon, we have to choose what our region is based on. Most generations, especially the more recent ones, draw heavily from the region they're based on. There aren't any rules for what our region will be based on, with the exception that it can't be Hawaii or the UK. We very recently got regions that cover them very well. Other than that, go nuts. It can based be part of a country, a country, or even a group of countries. Submission will be open for about another 24 hours.

Job #2: Africa

It may not be a country per say but it had quite an amazing ecosystem that would work amazing as a region. We could incorporate the Sahara desert, South African coasts, the Congo, and so on. We could even make it open world thanks to its size.

Western USA

While we already had one region based on the USA, that one basically stuck in New York. Here, we'd explore more of the western USA as a whole. Ideally this would span around across California, east as far as Las Vegas, and would go all the way up to Seattle. Between those 3 cities and all the stuff in between this would make for a large but very well filled out map with a lot of interesting places to go to and a variety of locations such as mountains, city life, and beaches.

I'm thinking perhaps a region based off of Canada. Plains, snow, and mountains work well. It would be a large, northern area, sorta like Sinnoh. It would mainly be an exploration region, with lots of wild areas, ruins, and Pokemon to discover. It would mostly be plains, but can also have areas such as tundra, mountain range, ocean, ice caps, and more. The few settlements would be quite large.

Anyways, I have two ideas for the region. I'm fairly certain one of them (Mexico/Latin America) will be submitted by someone else, so i'll go with the more niche idea: Pennsylvania. I'm biased, but i think there's a lot to work with. There's significant history in the Keystone State, from both the native people and people of European decent. There's various fauna, flora, and industries to base Pokémon on.

ignore this

New England

Yes, Unova already did northeastern United States, but that was really only New York/New Jersey. New England is honestly a whole nother beast entirely

New England typically consists of the six most northeastern US states, these being Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine (Though we may have to streamline it and only focus on a singular state or two). It's mostly known for bright vibrant autumns, chilly winters, and deep colonial ties, having been one of the first areas of the US colonized by British settlers, giving it some pivotal roles in American history

There's a lot to work with here with geography, culture, and potential Pokemon that I think it should at least be considered. I may be biased as heck on this one cuz I was initially from the area, but hey.

Job 1: Italy

italy-regions-map.gif

I feel Italy has so much untapped potential:
  • Gym battles taking place in Roman Colosseums
  • A beautiful City of Water based on Venice
  • A battle tower that just so happens to be leaning to the side
  • The volcanic ruins of an ancient Pompeii like city
  • Well known for being a country of sport, fashion and art achievements, there's an incredible amount of variety available
  • Instead of having a traditional bike, we could have a little moped
  • How about a battle in that Venitian City atop a pair of gondola boats?
Not to mention all the fun food item options you can have with Italy being known for some of the best food in the entire world.

A Greece-based region in the Pokemon world has extreme potential. It is a country so amazing and deep given its own history, mythology, and scenery. Just imagine all of the Greek mythology-based Pokemon we can have. We could have a Cerberus, Minotaur, Medusa, Hydra, etc... The list goes on! Even if its not set in the past, the region can still be inspired by the customs and culture of Ancient Greece rather than Modern Greece.

Besides the Mythology we could pull from, Greece has amazing scenery that could give our game a breath of fresh air in the visual side. We can have an island based on Santorini/Thera, a location with its own distinct architectural and aesthetic style that you've probably all seen at least once. A location based on the wild hills and coast of Corfu where you'll be able to catch tons of marine-based Pokémon. And hey when it comes to big cities, there's no need to mention Athens right?

Greece is amazing.

And no, not because of the memes. Brazil's a pretty big place and would lend itself well to a large, open game, it's very diverse and it's culture would have a lot to draw from, and most importantly, the Amazon Rainforest is a mountain of potential just waiting to be used. Maybe add in a couple artistic liberties based on the different types, and there we go, big tropical rainforest to run, climb, and search around in. Heck, we could even go and add a cartography aspect to it, seeing as such a wild place would have a lot of room for exploration.

Admittedly, I don't know that much about Brazilian culture and architecture, so I won't be able to contribute to the human civilizations much, but hey, it'll be a learning experience. It'll be fun to educate myself on this place.

Okay then

Job 1 Isreal

With so much culture and how many religious myths we can base pokemon on Isreal is a good backup choice

We could also use the myths and fauna of Persia and the othe middle east nations to create a very unique and cool region

JOB 1: Mexico
Mexico | History, Geography, Facts, & Points of Interest | Britannica

I submitted Pennsylvania because I assumed someone else would do this, but that never happened so here we are. Mexico is a North American nation with a rich history, both from the native inhabitants of the land and immigrants from Europe. The flora, fauna, and culture of Mexico is very unique and would be ripe for potential Pokemon.

Based on my trip to Cancun, I can say that all our Pokemon in this scenario would be iguanas. Iguanas were all over the place, I tell you. Step outside the resort room to go to the pool, there's an iguana just sitting there. Nothing but iguanas.

Granted, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Iguanas are nice.

  1. Africa - There's a lot to unpack and learn about here, and it sounds like a fun thing to dig into and learn about
  2. Mexico - It would have a unique, Latin American flair compared to the other Japan/Western location, plus the fact that I've actually been there
  3. Canada - I've got family there. Still consider myself Canadian-American, and I feel almost obligated to vote this
Since I tend to have compunctions against voting my own submissions, I'm not voting Brazil.

The votes are in!

Canada (Pokelego999/Perkilator) = 2
Russia (CashRegister) = 5
Africa (Venus) = 7
US West Coast (Jomosensual) = 2
New England (Ramen) = 0
Australia (Noipoi) = 10
Italy (Yoshi and Toad) = 6
Greece (Mr. Robotto) = 18
Brazil (Shark Lord) = 4
Israel (Grubhub) = 3

Mexico (Peridot) = 16

Our region is themed around Greece! Congrats to Mr. Robotto Mr. Robotto for winning.

Job #2: What should we name our Region?

No Pokemon region takes it's basis's name directly (well, all but Kanto...), we need to come up with a name for our Greek region! Be creative. For reference, Alola is a variation of the Hawaiian word for "hello"/"goodbye", and Galar might come from "Gallic". This will be open for 24 hours.

Job #3: Who is the Region's Professor?

Every region worth it's salt has a good old fashined tree-named professor! Submit the name of the professor, what they study, and a brief physical description (or a drawing, if you so desire). For example... "Professor Oak. He's an older fellow with grey hair. He studies Pokemon, and is trying to invent a Pokedex" would be sufficient. It's OK if multiple submissions share a name, but please don't go with any professors already in canon. This will be open for at least 24 hours, and might be extended.

Job 3: Professor Olive.

I'm sure I don't need to explain the name.

A bronze skinned older lady with a love for both Pokémon, uncovering legends and cooking on the side... unfortunately for her Aides, she's only good with two of those things and they're both Pokémon related.

In her youth she uncovered one of the legendary Pokémon of the region(will be decided what that legend is at a later point) which led to her love of unraveling Pokémon legends.

Despite her age she is still relatively physically fit, similar to Oak rather than Agatha.
She wears a labcoat as is tradition, and a floor length dress with the lower half accented with the greek key pattern.

shopping (1).jpeg

Unsure about the hair but I know she should be slightly greying.
