I'd more likely call that "reading a book" rather than "movie watching" if it's reading lots of text.I'm pretty sure that at any moment in a videogame where the player is forced to >stop playing< and read a large amount of texts could be qualified as what you call "movie watching."
I skimmed pretty much everything on this page since you all seem like reasonable RPG-loving people (esp Lawrence: fellow storyline addict), but then I read this. And gameplay is everything to me, i play with bgm set to 0 and skim the text blobs to get on with the game.
That Katherine battle was kinda hilarious with the bombardment of cartoony sound effects specially that forward flip sound effect. The one genre I just can't do is platformers. I mean I played some Mario, one Sonic game, and like 2 Kirby games, but they never really appealed to me.
Exception: Captain Claw was my **** back in the day. The Katherine boss fight will forever be one of my favorites. "So..... so..... pretty."
Its not like i'm ignoring the story, i'm just skimming it to get a general gist of it. There are some RPGs though that i actually like the story of that I end up taking my time with it (Xenoblade) but once i've played a game through i tend to skip scenes frequently on 2nd+ playthroughs. Its just a lot of times the story is predictable.I skimmed pretty much everything on this page since you all seem like reasonable RPG-loving people (esp Lawrence: fellow storyline addict), but then I read this.
Like, what? Gameplay is super important too, but how can you ignore such a big part of what makes up a genre like RPG? It's called a role-playing game for a reason. You're supposed to feel immersed in that world, like you are the main character or at least can empathize with them. What you're basically saying is that you only like to press buttons and kill things. Which is fine, your prerogative and whatnot, but it seems silly to play a genre where you ignore like 50% of what makes the game what it is.
