this thread isn't really about items you guys, anyway I do like the new look for the crates and barrels that adapt to each stage uniquely, but what would be better is a character in their own stage such as pit for example having an advantage in his own stage over the others which would really turn things around

that sounds cheap actually. that would basically make the mario series the better fighters since way back in smash 64, there have been more mario stages than any other series.

plus some might not even have a stage. Marth and Roy didn't so they would never of had any advantages

I guess you have a point there, but if a character doesn't have their own stage they could have an advantage in a stage from their series, assuming everyone that appears at least gets one stage from their series not each individual

Flint
Games: Mother 3 (GBA - 2006)

Bio: Your typical cowboy, Flint used to have the ideal life working as a rancher. He had a beautiful wife, Hinawa, two percocious youngsters named Claus and Lucas, and a faithful dog named Boney. At least, he did until the Pig Mask Army invaded the Nowhere Islands, and begin spreading their venomous influence across the land. Fires broke out in town, monsters went mad, and the natural wildlife was twisted by the sick experiments of the Pig Mask Army. While Flint and a team of townspeople were bravely trying to maintain the peace, word came in that there'd been a tragedy at the home of Hinawa's father, where she and the boys had been staying while Flint worked. Flint raced there, only to recieve the tragic news that Hinawa had been found dead, the tooth of a rebuilt beast lodged through her heart. In a rage, Flint went mad, attacking everyone near him until another villager laid him out cold with a wooden beam. He awoke to find himself in jail, and his son Lucas frantic over what to do. It seems little Claus had decided to get revenge, and decided to go after the beast himself. Flint broke out of jail, grabbed a few friends and headed for the beast's lair as fast as he could. There, he slayed the beast, but little Claus was nowhere to be found. As the years went by, the world changed but Flint didn't, and he hid himself away, still seeking revenge against the Pig Mask Army.

Tech: Flint relies on 2x4s, large pieces of lumber, to do the talking for him in most battles. He also has techniques that allow him to hit all enemies, or charge at one enemy with an attack that will either miss, or do astounding damage.

Lucas
Games: Mother 3 (GBA - 2006)

Bio: Lucas's story is equal parts heartbreaking and strange. It all began three years ago, with the arrival of the Pig Mask Army. Lucas soon found himself an only child as his brother was lost and presumed dead, and his mother was killed by a beast that the Pig Masks had experimented on. Dissatisfied with the world, Lucas first went with the flow, but soon he teamed up with the thief, Duster, the princess, Kumatora, and his faithful dog, Boney, in an effort to repel the efforts of the wicked Pig Mask Army. They soon found themselves meeting with the mystical Magypsies, an order of magical men dedicated to protecting those points of the world where energy spilled out like a fountain. They told Lucas that his only hope to match the power of the Army was to channel the energy into himself, but this task was not without problems. It seems an agent of the Pig Mask Army was also working to imbibe this energy himself, racing and beating Lucas's team to several of the 'needles' that sealed away the world's power. As Lucas and his friends delved deeper and deeper into their quest, they soon ran up against the Pig Mask Army and its creations, the greedy and utterly loathesome merchant Yokuba, and the horrible face behind all of this nightmare, Pokey Minch.
It seems Pokey was still enraged at being defeated by Ness, and escaped into a time in his Heavily Armored Craft. He seethed at the thought of a world where he couldn't win because he wasn't viewed as the hero. How was he expected to become powerful and respected when the world itself united against him? Thus, Pokey decided there was only one thing to do. He needed to travel, amass power, and reshape the world into one of his choosing. He'd sculpt every detail, making it so that he was the one people relied upon and came to recognize as the hero. His body, left twisted and frozen from the rigors of time travel, remained in a large mechanical device which allowed him to move and attack. He even went so far as to abduct Claus's body, bring him back to life, and brainwash him into being his loyal servant. In the end, Pokey's foolishness was his own undoing, allowing himself to be permanently sealed away inside of Dr.Andonut's Sphere from which nothing could escape.
All that was left was to undo what Pokey had done. Lucas and Claus faced off at the final needle of the world, and Claus attacked Lucas with an unseen viciousness, pummeling him with spells and weaponry while Lucas only held up his hands to fend off his brother's attacks. As the battle wore on, soon the voice of their mother, Hinawa, permeated their midsts, piercing through Claus's blanketed mind. Flint joined in as well, standing beside Lucas in battle as Claus finally broke free of Pokey's devilry and collapsed. With Kumatora, Duster, Flint, Boney and his brother Claus standing before him, Lucas finally pulled the final needle. With that gesture, he unleashed the hope in his heart that the world could still be a good place, free of the influences of Pokey Minch forever. The sky darkened, the earth shook, the seas spit fire and the clouds sent out tornadoes as the world was ripped apart and reordered, resorted, and restored back to how it once was, allowing everyone, except for Pokey Minch, a shot at pure, Pokey free life.

Tech: Lucas mainly fights with sticks and bats, but he's also got Psi powers common to the Earthbound/Mother series, including PK Special, PK Flash, Life Up, Healing, Refresh, Psycho Counter and more.

As interesting as that is, neither of those characters would fall under 'returning characters'. You might want to make a new thread for them.

Unless you are proposing replacements for Ness?

I wouldn't mind leaving behind Pichu, Doc, and Falco. They're all just weaker copies... except for Falco since his differences varies.

What I cannot bare to see is Roy or Marth leaving... since I use them often. Roy has enough differences from Marth to be his own character. Also, it would seem sad if Marth (or Roy) is the only Fire Emblem character in Brawl...

Falco's alot more different from Fox than Roy is from Marth, so that's a moot argument. Most people seems to think Roy's getting the axe, although Marth is a bit less certain.

Either way, there's no chance in heck that we'll see any given series have less representatives in Brawl then were present in Melee. Ike ftw!

I think that when cars from that Mario Kart stage run into the barrels, both should explode and damage nearby players. ._o That'd be intense and realistic.

Super Smash Bros. doesn't count as a spin-off game right? Because it's not for a certain character, it's for everyone who's awesome.
Pit isn't awesome, must be a spinoff. XP

Well it's safe to say you don't know that much about the clones. Falco is totally different to Fox, Ganondorf is totally different to Captain, Pichu is totally different to Pikachu, and Young Link is moderately different to Link. Ganondorf will return, as will Falco, and I'm betting they will be harshly Luigified. I hate Pichu (well not "hate", but he's just a dumb concept for a character so "disapprove of") and he's leaving, Doctor Mario is exactly like Mario so he's gone, and Young Link is gone due to his lack of popularity. As for Roy... yea he's out because Marth rips him apart too hard. Roy can't even stand in Marth's shadow.

I believe the word is "promote". I know we've probly established the word, but whatever, just thought I'd toss my two cents in. I'm pretty good at vocabulary.

I think everyone except pichu is coming back--the clones are worth keeping in ---even if the developers don't enhance them or give them more unique move sets---i mean how hard would it be to just throw them back in? what i see happening is the clones havign more unique move sets and just pichu biting the dust. dr mario could be an alternate costume. if the developers are smart they will realize that it;s better to add then take away. There is somebody for each of the charecters on the board---so why chuck anyone? roy may go...but like i said i don;t think they wanna take anything away from the players.

i think what everyone should worry about more is whether or not their favorite charecters are gonna come back looking good.

i think fox looks ugly and cartooney...but thats ok because he looks more like himself in the starfox titles. but in melee he looks more mature. i;m a peach player...and the worst thing that could happen for me is if she comes back looking like she does in mario party or the mario sport games. I don;t wanna see a de-evolution of any charecters in terms of the design. everyone looks their best in melee in my opinion. That are mature and sharp looking. and they are also well proportioned. ---so i hope the developers take that into consideration.

otherwise i think we're safe in terms of pretty much everyone coming back. pichu won't be a loss. and i know some peopel mentioned sheik was only in one zelda game and should probably be left out....but sheik is an AWESOME fighter---and i hope the developers realize that

lastly---i;d like to see more use of barrel cannons in brawl. they are the most neglected item in melee. They appear infrequently *EVEN WHEN YOU TURN OFF ALL OTHER ITEMS AND PUT THE RATIO ON VERY HIGH* and they disappear very quikcly

if their duration on screen was longer it could be a really fun item

just a thought

*can;t wait for brawl*

DM has some technical differences from regular mario, his fair isnt a meteor smash, his nair gains strength the longer its out, his down tilt shoots characters over his back, and other little technical things that add to game strategy. I think that with the new game they will have similar overlaps in the character designs like in this game, and while some characters were obviously out of favor in this game, it is difficult for us to actually say they will remove anyone because all the originals were kept from the original game. And with the increases in storage space that come with the Wii disks I think that we really need to look at what is sensible... Removing even a few players might alienate a developed fanbase amongst for a specific character. We can't really assume how many characters they will add, we know of approximately 4 or so already guaranteed, but seriously what does that warrant us? How many more characters would actually be added? Maybe 3 or 4 more after those 4 we already know? If so then we need to ask ourselves: would nintendo feel it necessary to get rid of character builds in order to make room for 8, or so, more characters considering the large leap in storage capacity for the game? I think that it's a pretty balzy assumption that nintendo would attempt to dismantle this dualistic structure that they embarked on in melee.

I wonder, do different meteor attacks have different recovery windows? Like would Mario's meteor give you more time to recover than say Samus'?

If not, that's what I think they should do. The attacks that look like they would be harder to recover from should be harder to recover from. All meteors should have some spike ability to start with, then the turn into meteors after a set time.

The "Ganon Stomp" and DK's fAir should be top tier for that.
Peach and Zelda's dAir should be bottom tier.
Everything else falls between there, don't feel like making a list.

Well doubt ALL character will return since sakurai said that some wouldnt, that would be the clones (except falco and ganondorf, they deserve their own moveset) and sheik :p

You realize there are lots of people who prefer Pichu over Pikachu right? I'm pretty sure there's more potential for Pichu having a new moveset than Doctor Mario. True Doctor Mario can be a costume, but there are lots of moves from the Pokemon game Pichu has the potential to use. Pichu wasn't a watered down version of Pikachu; he has a different playstyle. Therefore Pichu should stay if everyone else should. If Pichu gets taken out, some other characters should be taken out too.

Okay my own personal opinion is that all the charecters are different in some ways. Like Doc and regular mario, doc's cape is longer, he's a little slower, and his moves are not as effective as mario's.

As for roy and marth, I'm a roy player so I will try to be as little byist as i can, Roys moves are stronger, except ariels, marth is faster but a little weaker. And...... that's all i can think of right......... OH! marth's sword is longer, and roy's counter does more damage back than marth's.

As for Pikachu and Pichu, Pichu is totally annoying.

Fox and Falco, Falco falls faster and his blaster is stonger.

Gannon and Captain, Obvious.

Link and Young link, link's grapple hook is longer but young link is faster can jump higher and his bomb's fuse lasts longer than link.

But seriously If Gannondorf doesn't come back I think I will get totally Owned on a scale of I will look like a 2 year old playing against the world champion. Yeah that's about it. I could live if roy and Young link didn't return though. As long as gannondorf returns I'm happy.

Wouldn't it be interesting if they took out Doc, but if you choose a Doc costume with Mario, you will have Doc's moves? Throwing pills instead of fireballs and such?

well as long as they move the same and do the same damage and all, its ok, no one would mind it would just be a diferent skin for the special moves, the final smash would be a tsunami of pepto bismol :p

If they did there will be critics saying doc should have been a separate character. Also good job Gannondorf77 for an amazing 1st post

You know, one of the Pichu trophies literally tells you that the best way to play him is to run, hide, and use any items that appear. How is that not watered-down?

Nice idea, but I wonder how the casual crowd (the definite majority of players) would take that sort of thing.

I mean, if terms like "Meteor Smash" and "DI" mean nothing to you, how would it feel to get spiked by Peach and recover in an instant, then get KO'd by DK spiking you off the edge because you couldn't jump in midair?

What I'm saying is that it might be a bit too confusing. Pro Smash is convoluted enough as is, I say.

Well, the thing is... let's just compare two moves here for me to get my point across. One's a meteor and one's a spike; DK's fAir being the meteor and Falco's dAir being the spike. (Even though I'm in love with Falco and couldn't live without his spike, I have to bite the bullet to make my point valid.)

Let's say that you've NEVER played Melee in your life. What move would you think to be more devestating? When a gorilla folds his hands into a mallot, winds back his arms, and then wails you on the top of head full force? Or when a bird connects with his toes after already being fully extended for a good second and a half in the same move?

Doesn't make much sense that you can recover instantly from the gorilla sledgehammer and when the bird falls on you it's an instant KO at 30%.

Just because a trophy says it you think Pichu is weaker in every area? There are some points Pichu is better at. I probably play better with Pichu than with Pikachu. I couldn't beat a friend with Pikachu, yet I could with Pichu. Some of their attacks have different effects, and I'm pretty sure Pichu's upsmash is better than Pikachu's.

So how is Pichu better? If that Usmash thing is true, it's negligible. Pichu is, pure and simple, the worst clone in the game, in that none of his moves are different enough from his source character's attacks, and then there's the obvious (half his moves hurt himself, he's super-lightweight, etc.).

You may prefer Pichu, but that doesn't mean he's a good character.

Also, can someone clarify for me what the difference between spikes and meteors is?

I personally think if 3 characters leave, it'll be Young Link, Pichu, and Roy.

why not Dr. Mario?
well... first off, I love him too much. second off, here's my legit reasoning that thou must bathe in:
Roy and Marth are from Fire Emblem. like just about every game in any given series, if you're good at one game, you'll be above average in others you play.
Link & Young Link: Zelda, OoT. heck, they're even in the same game. And, I learned that since I'm slightly above average in one ZXelda game, that I'm about average in another.
Pichu and Pikachu are in every game together--well, at least Pikachu is in every game that Pichu is in. doomed.
as for Mario and Dr. Mario: two COMPLETELY different series. I still wonder why Doc ahd the mushroom and not like a pill or a virus, similar to the way Wario has the 'W'.
it's the reason I can rock at the Dr. Mario series but suck worse than nubz at any Mario game I lay hands on.
@ no one in particular: don't try to lie to me. when it comes to just about any given seires, if you've played one you've played (or at least gotten the gist of) them all.
Mario (/) = Dr. Mario.

oh, and for SSBM< differences...
Doc's Smashes > Mario's.
Doc tends to give more damage
Mario is faster
Mario's fair is a meteor, while Docs pwns you while you're still on land
needless to say, the pills and the fireballs are different
Dr. Mario (at least with me or any given CPU) has a tendency to give out lots of easy damage in comparison to Mario. I used Mario and did the same moves with Doc, but to no avail.
as said in my sig, there's your sign.

You uh, might want to check out the Confirmed Character Discussion thread for that topic. Like, seriously, that's the topic of discussion there now.
