Just so were on the same page here. are people just playing devils advocate around here or do any of you really believe that 3 stock tournaments would be better than 2 stock tournaments? Even Dabuzs arguement seems to be 'yea 2 stock is clearly better but at this point nobodys going to change.'

To be fair, I said "high-level," rather than top-level.

Either way, I may not be winning nationals, but the guys winning nationals still don't want to have to face me in tournament. I'd be so bold as to call myself a top player.

There has to be a cut-off somewhere. Otherwise, only the people winning nationals could be considered for it, which is technically reasonable, but, are there really so few people that could reasonably win at a national tournament?

Well you have to consider who is capable of really pulling through so many matchups at top level play.

Sure its cool to see Illmatic beat ESAM or Kie beat Vinnie, but there is still a big difference in beating a top player and being a top player. And its all in the title. Can you reach the top or simply high at a national?

Top level players are a threat to everyone (or almost everyone). High level players are simply a threat to certain top level players.

Evidence of being top level is simply playing and defeating the best from many different regions.

It's a subjective thing to consider, is all. We use our best judgment to tell if someone poses a threat to virtually every player.

Based on that, there isn't much convincing someone whether or not a person is a top player through anything but a greater number of wins.

I still wonder how a person gets ousted from top-player position other than fewer/less consistent wins, and I wonder if it's harder to get to top-player status than to lose top-player status.

I don't know what high-level players you could be talking about. Maybe your definition of 'high-level play' just has a lower threshold than mine but I never see good players do that.

Do we have data that shows the effect of 2-stock games on gameplay? What about changing the timer itself?

Either way, it's less about making the game fun to watch and more about testing a specific set of skills. Seeing how long a player can last before they fall asleep or charge in just to get it over with isn't what I have in mind when it comes to winners and losers.

Ramin you definitely approach out of boredom, or at least being greedy quite often enough I have to say.

Regardless, m2k approaches out of boredom/being greedy even. Most top players are at a skill cap where for the most part they have trained themselves to just be g** and not approach but... regardless of stock change being patient will always be a factor in ANY competitive fighter.

Thing with 2 stocks is that matches could end up going much faster, and having more than 3 stocks could potentially make matches drag on longer than intended, even resulting in multiple timeouts. Sure, I'm thinking of the worst case scenarios with this, but they are points to consider.

2-stock matches will (on average) end quicker than 3-stock matches, and 3-stock matches with an 8-minute timer will be more likely to go to time than 2-stock matches with an 8-minute timer.

Sadly, Springfield, Massachusetts is devoid of a Smash community as far as I know. All I have to rely on is wi-fi matches, the occasional friend, and the CPUs, and we know how reliable those are. At least I know I'm not bad, considering my resources; I came in third in a (poorly organized) tournament held at PAX East 2011, if that's anything to go by.

tl;dr: No, not really, unfortunately.
