This talk about character reactions reminds me of Source Gaming's reaction to Piranha Plant, which is still one of my favorite Smash character reveal reaction videos of all time.

The confusion turning into hysterical laughter is so funny, this is one of my favorite videos ever. It's so good
This trailer is oddly really nostalgic too.
Everytime someone sends this trailer i'm like "oh, this trailer was such a fever dream".

It's me or I feel like if Hudson Soft was still in business. We could get Bomberman or Bonk in smash bros 4 or ultimate. As far as I remember Hudson Soft and Nintendo had a good relationship, we did in fact get the first Mario party because of them.

Say, since it's officially June now, are we allowed to talk about Direct predictions? I doubt it'll be anything TOO big given we've got a new console confirmed, but at the very least I could see this being where we get some of the more highly rumored stuff (i.e. an FE4 remake).

I mean, the most common prediction/speculation I'm hearing about with it is that the HD version of Dragon Quest 3 is going to be shown soon. Possibly paired with Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD.

The hopium side of my brain says Smash 64 on NSO followed by a teaser for the next Smash game.

on the console they're not announcing?
I remember a game trailer for a game, that game's first game trailer, said one of the game consoles it would be for was the NX, which was a code name that would later become the Switch. This was several years ago, by the way. I am not saying it will happen, but if Nintendo wanted to, even though I am sure they won't, they would just use the code name for the next console for such a teaser. Now, if only there was a code name...

I've been seeing rumors surrounding an HD 2.5 remix of DQ 3 and maybe 1 and 2 also though I don't know how much stock to put in them.

More games coming to the NSO and a new console selection, Turbografx 16 aka the PC Engine

All I am hoping for is more NSO announcements in the Direct, especially 3rd party titles for GBA and N64. My most wanted ones being the Bomberman games on N64, the Goemon games on N64, Castlevania Legacy of Darkness on N64, Boktai on GBA, the Sonic GBA games, Gunstar Super Heroes on GBA and Shining Soul 1 + 2 and Shining Force GBA.

Edit: Oh yeah, Metroid Prime 4 would actually great too.

I still need Wind Waker HD and a new Tomodachi Life on Switch
Kinda sick of them selling HD rereleases of Zelda as fully priced separate games. They really should just bundle WWHD and TPHD together (along with SSHD if that wasn't available on its own already) into one pack. It probably won't happen because... well they could just make more money off separate releases, but this would certainly be a lot more consumer friendly and they wouldn't have to always pick and choose which Zeldas to re-release since they could just do all of them at once.

I personally want Estelle Bright more since she’s a lot more fun as a character.
Honestly? A Trails rep sounds more realistic. Falcom throws out a new Trails almost yearly, only taking a break every three-ish years for Ys. Which I guess makes sense, seeing as Ys always has new environments and enemies and designs and all that, whereas Trails gets to reuse models a lot because it's a sequential series. Even so, Trails takes significantly longer to get through than Ys.

But yeah, that's besides the point. My point is, Ys has seniority, but Trails is Falcom's darling and would probably get the main focus, as much as I'd prefer Adol. Out of the Trails reps, Rean seems to be the most popular at the moment, but Estelle was the first and seems to be pretty popular herself. Rean was also a main character for five games, but now that we have Daybreak and Kai no Kiseki, he's no longer got the recency bias going for him - That goes to Van now, I believe

I literally just want some way to play Wind Waker on the Switch, A combo pack with both WWHD and TPHD would be the perfect solution, but I am keeping my expectations rock bottom for something like that.

Metroid anything.
F-Zero anything.
DKC anything.
I'm starved.

Banjo-Tooie and DKR on the NSO service would be nice too. It's been forever since I've last played them and they're perfect for a portable console.

Ever since Triple Deluxe (Or arguably even the 20th Anniversary Collection), Kirby had a consistent 2-year release schedule, only being broken for Forgotten Land (And that was a whole new gameplay style on top of COVID screwing with development and release schedules). And even if it's not another major release, I distinctly remember there being some sort of trademark filed for Kirby Triple Deluxe a while back. Be it a new release or a remake, I have a hunch that we might be seeing something from Kirby this month.

If they released Bomberman 64: The Second Attack, that might actually sell me on the more expensive Switch online subscription, at least for a little bit. I've been wanting to replay that game, but it is ludicrously expensive online. (I'm aware there are other means, but they don't seem particularly reliable)

I hope that's the case. That's really the only acceptable explanation for wtf DQ3 is taking so long.

I mean, the DQ3 one is no rumor. It was announced 3 years ago.

I would love the Shining Soul games on there. I never experienced Shining Soul 2.

...Of course, I want the Quest games on there(Quest 64, Holy Magic Century(x3), Eltale Monsters, Quest RPG: Brian's Journey, Jack no Daibouken, Quest Fantasy Challenge, Holy Magic Century(Gameboy). ...Yes, there's 9 different games(though some are ports, but it's complicated, since they all have some kind of difference, with sometimes language being the only kind).

If Nihon Falcom gets a character, I can see him being very likely. Plus, Nihon Falcom has a major significance in the RPG genre, so I can picture some kind of playable rep from them.
I don't want to be off topic but if someone want to begin Ys series which one would you suggest. Thanks for your time.

So do I need to play Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes in order to better understand the overall story and especially about Sothis? I had a thought they maybe (her race or whatever) actually kicked her out and her coming was an apocalypse in the making.

I haven't played any of the games, so I don't know.

But whenever I want to start a series, I either start with the most popular/well-known game or with the very first one. So if I were to begin the Ys series, I'd probably start with the first game, which just got released on the Switch this year.

Have they ever gone with the most recent character over the most popular or iconic character?
I think this Van guy looks cool, but is he popular at all? I never played a trails game mind you, just saying because i can't imagine them picking Van if Estelle or Rean are the most popular characters and have legacy.
Like they picked Cloud over Terra (most popular in Nintendo platforms but not overall) and Lightning (most recent mainline FF when Cloud was added to Smash) for example.

Three Hopes gives you more questions than answers on her so I wouldn't look into it for that reason.

Do you guys think Adol from Ys is likely for next game?
I don't wanna be too much of a naysayer, but personally no I don't think so. The rise in discussion around Adol and Ys came in response to Terry blindsiding most of the community, and speculating on which other smaller scale, legacy Japanese companies may be viable. And from that perspective, Nihon Falcom is a fair place to go. I would rather invite this kind of conversation than shut it out, it's better than staying locked into AAA stuff and the usual suspects.

On the other hand though, I don't think Ys is quite comparable to Fatal Fury or King of Fighters. I think when we discuss SNK's relative size, it's easy to neglect just how important of a staple they were to Japanese arcades and beyond. The more lowkey significance of Ys feels a bit too segregated from what we've seen so far for me to really be confident in them gunning for it. It's still not a super recognizable series on a worldwide scale and there are a number of other RPG series that I think may join the conversation first. I'm glad that a good conversation can arise from seldom discussed classic characters, but sometimes the pieces just don't quite come together for me.

If we did end up getting a Falcom character, I could see there being some competition for Ys from the also highly acclaimed Trails series. Although it seems like people who know more about these games than I do have spoken on that already.

nope. sothis is the progenitor god of their world and the mother of many beings who'd descendants have the crests none of this comes up in three hopes. the reason why she appears to byleth gets explained in the golden dear routefeel free to message me if you want to know more

On the topic, I've always felt like a Lufia protagonist could be interesting, either Lufia herself or Maxim from the second game. Lufia is another one of those classic long running JRPG series with a lot of legacy and one of the hallmarks of the 16-bit era that's less prominent in the West, and it's swapped publishers a few times from Taito to Square to Atlus, and like Phantasy Star kind of changed genres and became more action-y over time.

Lufia's moveset would be pretty self explanatory because she's a mage with a range of spells, including more niche stuff like water elemental spells. Maxim meanwhile is a more standard JRPG swordsman protagonist, but is specifically a light swordsman who can use rapiers, and the spells he has access to cover pretty much the whole range from elemental spells to status boosts and debufss. I could see him being unique by giving him the IP Meter as a mechanic, which would function something like a mix between Aura and Cloud's Limit, where the more damage he takes, the more potent his spells become, at the cost of damaging himself the more he uses them. Really lean into the risk-reward mechanic of the IP Meter which encourages you to deliberately take damage in order to built it up. I don't think it's very likely (or likely at all actually), but I think it's in a similar realm to someone like Adol.

Shining Soul 2 is to Shining Soul 1 as Diablo 2 is to Diablo 1.
  • Quality of life changes like the characters moving faster, characters can reach Level 200 instead of 99, and the Crafting System involving the Mithril, Dark Matter and whatnot being expanded upon and a bit less random.
  • It's more open-ended compared to SS1. Like it's still for the most part a start-to-finish kind of game, but compared to the first game, there are quests you can find in the main hub(which is bigger compared to the first game) that have you search the areas you explore, there are quests that unlock new areas, there are secrets that you can find in each area, there's basically a lot more you can do and find compared to the first game.
  • 4 new classes in addition to the ones from the first game with additional traits you can get and level up, as well as some new weapon and magic types. There's also a secret character you can unlock similar to Drizzt Do'Urden from the old Balder's Gate Dark Alliance games.
  • Depending on your knowledge of Shining Force, Shining Soul 2 has a more original story and more original bosses whereas Shining Soul 1 is (almost) a gauntlet of all of the Shining Force final bosses with Darksol and Dark Dragon being the Main Villains.
And both Shining Soul 1 and 2 would heavily benefit from the NSO's Local and Online Modes, between being able to play with 3 other players or even trade with other players in general. Shining Soul 2 is great fun and a very good Diablo-like.
