Alright, show of hands; if DLC bosses were possible as at least gifts in updates (a la the Tockles Spirit), which bosses would you’ve liked to see regardless? My picks would be:

-Queen Sectonia
-Grima
-Wingo (Captain Toad)
-Porky (returning from Brawl)
-Petey Piranha (returning from Brawl, except he actually fights like a boss in Ultimate)
I've seen some people in the thread suggest Geese Howard or Rugal Bernstein which would be cool and would be my picks imo.

But as I'd love for either of them to be bosses, knowing Sakurai and his tendencies to be accurate to the source material, he'd make those fights be as bull**** ridden as reasonably possible.

Most of the Smash community isn't ready for SNK Boss Syndrome, but seeing people's reaction to it for the first time would be magical.

Can we please stop with these "tribute to Iwata character" rumors? Not only are they completely baseless, but it's very disrespectful to be tossing around a dead man's personal interests and accomplishments for the sake of predicting which fictional character will get in a video game.

I don't know who started them, but even if this person has reason to believe the rumors are true, we shouldn't be having these kinds of discussions.

Having it take a while to beat Rugal in KOF 98, I can safely say I agree people aren't ready for GENOCIDO CUTTAH!

I'm disappointed in lack of people wanting either Sigma or a proper Dr. Wily fight. As long as it isn't Kaiser Sigma from MMX3. Cause that hitbox is kind of BS. Gill would a great SF boss.

I’d like to have a certain boss from Pokemon Sun & Moon. I’v even written a concept for it:

The Lusamine/Nihilego fusion could be an interesting two phase boss where you first had to fight her Pokemon team before taking her on.

The first phase of the fight has you fighting her Pokemon, one at a time. Lusamine watches the battle from the background, sending out another Pokemon every time you defeat the previous one.
Her Pokemon act like K.O.able Assist Trophies, they move around, have two to three attacks and need to be hit a certain amount of times to be defeated. You fight them in the following order:
-Clefable is the easiest one, its only moves are Moonblast( similar to Mewtwo’s Shadow Ball but without the darkness damage) and Metronome(effects taken directly from Togepi’s Poke Ball, including darkening the battlefield, giving you the Flower status and causing an earthquake)
-Lilligant can be a tricky little thing, it can damage you with Petal Dance if you’re up close, and can temporarily stun you with Stun Spore.
-Mismagius can disappear into the ground and pop out from below you with Shadow Sneak(similar to one of Marx’s attacks but smaller) and burn you with Mystic Fire(similar to Charizard’s Flamethrower but bigger)
-Milotic is when things get more difficult. its Hydro Pump can damage you in addition to pushing you(eat your heart out Kyogre), it can swing its tail at you if you’re close enough with Aqua Tail(comparable to Rayquaza’s tail whip attack from Brawl) and can summon blasts of water from the ground with Waterfall.
-Bewear is the last mon you face before Lusamine, it can rush at you while flailing its arms around with Flail, can uppercut you with Hammer Arm(taken directly from its Poke Ball summon) and can grab you and try to "hug" you to death with Bind(shake the control stick to escape).

After all her Pokemon are defeated, Lusamine gets furious and decides to take you head on. At this point, phase two begins. She can now be damaged, but the insane mother/parasitic alien fusion have some nasty tricks up her sleeves.
-She’ll try to crush you by slamming her tentacles at you multiple times with Pound.
-She’ll levitate rocks off the ground and throw them at you with Ancient Power.
-She’ll drench the floor with poisonous gunk that damages you with Venom Drench.
-She’ll summon pointed rock from the ground to impale you with Stealth Rock.
-And finally, when her health is low, she’ll violently swing her tentacles around in a desperation attack that replaces her Pound: Brutal Swing.

Edit: Oh, and I’d also like Kracko, Mother Brain, Wily Capsule and Sephiroth to be bosses.

There's at least 20 Viking characters in The Banner Saga trilogy.

No one even thought about googling 'Viking video game'... mfw people don't use google for vital video game info:

(I'm not serious, just in case it wasn't obvious)

Joking aside, the game is relatively old and probably wasn't successful enough to be considered for Smash. That said, i've played the whole trilogy a few months ago and i would definitely recommend it if you like tactical RPGs, there's a few mechanics in there that make the combat system feel unique compare to other games in the genre plus, the story/dialogues are well written. The visuals and soundtrack are also great, pretty impressive game overall, especially for a kickstarter project.
I referenced it in the bit about jotun.

It's time for us to get echo bosses.

As for other cool boss ideas, more Kirby bosses would fit perfectly. Wily and Mother Brain should have received the Rathalos treatment.

If Banjo was a base game addition, then we'd probably would of had Gruntilda appear as a boss in the single-player stuff.

Especially since they'd already have the asset on the Spiral Mountain stage, which is probably why we got Giga Bowser and Ganon as bosses, considering they already had the models from the FSs.

I will answer this with series that doesn't have a boss fight, but should:
Assist/Stage Boss -> Would work like it normally is, but with some new attacks and tweaks, a hitbox and a good amount of HP.
  • Star Fox: Andross (Assist Boss)
  • Earthbound: Porky returns
  • Pokémon: Rayquaza returns
  • Metroid: Mother Brain (Assist Boss)
  • Yoshi: Kamek
  • Kid Icarus: Hades
  • Punch-Out: Mik- I mean, Sand Man
  • Megaman: Yellow Devil (Stage Boss)
  • Pikmin: The Plasm Wraith
  • Fire Emblem: Grima
  • Xenoblade: Metal Face (Stage Boss)
  • Splatoon: DJ Octavio
  • Don't know anything about Metal Gear, so I'm not naming who
  • Sonic: Eggman
  • Street Fighter: M. Bison
  • Final Fantasy: Sephiroth
  • Don't know anything about Bayonetta also
  • Persona: Yaldabaoth
  • Dragon Quest: Slime King
  • Banjo Kazooie: Gruntilda
  • KOF/Fatal Fury: Geese Howard
BONUS: Bosses for characters I think will be on Pass 2
  • ARMS Rep(s): Dr. Coyle
  • Geno: Croco
  • Rex/Pyra: Jin & Malos
  • Crash: Cortex
  • Lyoid Irving: Mithos Yggdrasil
  • Master Chief: 343 Guilty Spark

Nothing really new in the schedule for games. Xenoblade, Clubhouse Games and Famicom Detective Club (in Japan) this year, Bayo 3, Metroid Prime 4 and BotW2 still tba. Don't know if there's really anything to pull from here for character discussion but figure some people will be interested.

Animal Crossing is making bank.

The Smash DLC is still set for June, so that's good. It seems like they aren't doing a traditional briefing and that it was/is being held over a conference call, meaning that unlike every other year they haven't said anything about what they plan for E3, or what they plan to do instead this year. We might be in the drought for the long haul at this point.

I liked the special boss battles we got like Marx and Ganon. Even though it may not be feasible one of my biggest wants is to have a special boss in Classic Mode for every character, usually the main villain from their home series.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy: Giga Bowser
Bowser, Bowser Jr, Wario.: Mario
Yoshi: Kamek
Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong: King K Rool
King K Rool: Donkey Kong
Link, Sheik, Zelda: Ganon
Young Link: Skull Kid
Toon Link: Toon Ganondorf
Ganondorf: Link
Samus, Zero Suit Samus: Meta Ridley (big)
Dark Suit Samus, Ridley: Samus
Kirby, Meta Knight: Emperor DeDeDe (new)
King DeDeDe: Kirby
Little Mac: Giga Mac
Fox, Falco: Wolf
Wolf: Fox
Pikachu, Pichu, Jigglypuff: Mewtwo
Lucario, Greninja, Incineroar: Rayquaza
Mewtwo: Pokemon Trainer
Pokemon Trainer: Blue (Gyarados, Growlithe, Exeggcute; type advantages in this battle are on)
Captain Falcon: Black Shadow
Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena: Medusa
Ness, Lucas: Porky
Wii Fit Trainer: Wii Fat Trainer (made up, out of shape WFT)
Pac Man: Big Ghost
Simon: Dracula
Snake: Metal Gear
Sonic: Dr. Eggman
Mega Man: Dr. Wily
Ryu: M. Bison
Ken: Ryu
Bayonetta: Baldur
Cloud: Sephiroth
Banjo-Kazooie: Gruntilda
Terry Bogard: Geese Howard

Aside from returning Brawl bosses or upgrading stage bosses.

Dr. Eggman: The fight starts with Eggman in his Egg Carrier, but mid match he will fly off screen and will come back in his iconic Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2.

Sephiroth: The only boss who is the size of a playable fighter, he fights pretty much how you’d expect him to. Mid match he could either summon Meteor, giving you a time limit to beat him, or he could just grow his one wing, becoming more mobile and dangerous.

King Boo: Takes inspiration from Luigi’s Mansion games. He will summon Boos to assist him mid match.

Zygarde: Starts the fight in it’s regular serpent form then transforms into its 100% form mid match.

Nightmare: From Metroid, it’s face plating will break off mid match, with it then becoming more aggressive.

Nemesis: Starts off in his iconic humanoid form with his signature rocket launcher, it then transforms into his final form Resident Evil 3

I thought about Dr. Wily and DJ Octavio, but I think one guy in a floating mech is good enough. A Metal Gear also came to mind, but I didn’t think they’d be all that interesting.

Happy to see Pokémon MD RTDX surpassing GTI and Super in less than a month since its release! I doubt that sales will go up a lot in the next months, but this is a good result anyway and it makes me hope for an Explorers of Sky remake and/or a totally new game for the next years.

Animal Crossing is really selling a lot!

Still suspecting Spring Man regardless. Again protagonist/mascot first which he is especially since ARMS is an fighting game.

Fulgore = Killer Instinct (Mascot)
Heihachi = Tekken (Mascot)
Nightmare = Soulcalibur (Mascot)
Ryu = Street Fighter (Protagonist/Mascot)
Nakoruru = Samurai Shodown (Mascot)
Scorpion = Mortal Kombat (Mascot)
Terry = Fatal Fury/King of Fighters (Protagonist/Mascot)

Notice an pattern?
does anybody got that ye olde ">muh patterns" image from the Smash 4 hype days?
Luigi's always been a coward, he just doesn't realize he's extremely brave by reacting to eldritch gods the same way as he'd react to seeing a spider in his cupboard shelves

Oh boy that'd make my meme accurate
View attachment 270906
i mean, it shouldn't be too obvious most people are just vouching for Springman in hopes of more early promotions of the currently unplayable. not like they'll really care about Springman. (same said for people justifying Chrom for echo fighter speculation)

Sakurai's Pic of the Day.

They're adding another one boiz, get ready.
i like how somebody pointed out this was posted the same time Tiki was dropped to Dragalia Lost
really should play the mobile game some time.

In terms of bosses, there isn't many I would be hyped for and overall this isn't a feature I would be super excited about, but there are some bosses that come to mind. The first one that comes to mind is another Monster Hunter boss. In Monster Hunter every fight is basically a boss fight so if there is one series that deserves another boss, it would be this one. The series has so many imaginative and cool monsters to fight. Nargacuga, Any of the fated four (glavenous, gammoth, mizutsune, astalos), Ahtal-Ka, Bhrachydios, Gore Magala, etc. It's hard to pinpoint which monster deserves to be the second boss, but any of these and more could work. As for other bosses, Dr. Eggman would be hype just to see more Sonic content, Sepiroth would be cool, a Pokemon whether its Rayquaza again or a new one, and a fighting game boss like M. Bison or Geese just makes sense.

And now, a question for all of you. What is a game(s) that you are not expecting to get a character from, but would be happy to see something like a boss fight, spirit event, assist trophy, Mii costume, or something else to represent it. A dark horse pick if you will. To give you an example, I have been playing Catherine Full Body on PS4. I couldn't wait to play the game on Switch so I got it on there. Anyway I have been really enjoying the game and was thinking about what type of content it would get in Smash. I am not expecting a playable character at all, Vincent is generic (as he is supposed to be essentially an avatar for you to put yourself into his shoes as you make decisions) and I have no clue how the puzzle mechanics would be translatable to a moveset. But since the game was made by Atlus and they are already involved in Smash, maybe with the Switch port of Catherine Full Body we could see a spirit event for the game. The spirit list is full of characters you would not expect to make an appearance at all, so Catherine would not look out of place.

Point is, Catherine Full Body is a unique game unlike any other and its a game that I really enjoy. It could even be within my top 30 favorite games. So I would love it if it had some kind of content. There is no game like it. Other examples of dark-horse picks would be like VectorMan, Ristar, and Crypto from Destroy All Humans. VectorMan could peobably work as a Mii gunner, though his physical properties would make him more suitable for an assist trophy. Same with Ristar. As for Crypto, he is my ultimate dark-horse pick when it comes to a playable character. But at the most I see him getting an assist trophy and if not, a spirit event would be enough to make me happy.

Vincent is generic
I dunno what you meant by 'generic' if you think about P 5 hero / Ren / Akira. Viny here got more character than him, who can't even speak outside of few times. Compared to him, Vincent has a lot more character to him, and his emotions. He also appeared in p3p as well, fun fact!

Err...honestly? Controversial opinions ahead:

SMRPG.
I want to see Geno's mii outfit redone with a proper mascot head.

No More Heroes.
Travis Touchdown and friends as a Spirit Event, an Assist and a Mii costume.

Sonic the Hedgehog.
Similar to Geno I'd like to see Tails and Knuckles' mii outfits redone with Cuphead and Sans style mascot heads. The current ones are uncomfortable.

For the costumes bit:

Ori (Ori and the Blind Forest): I honestly don’t think we’ll get another Microsoft playable rep (MC is the exception if AND ONLY IF MCC comes to Switch) but Ori as a costume would be sweet. maybe come with the song Restoring the Light, Facing the Dark.

HOT TAKE AHEAD - Geno from SMRPG. if we get another square enix rep it’ll be someone more recognizable like Lara Croft, 2B from NieR Automata, or even Neku Sakuraba from TWEWY. but Geno could suffice with a premium face mask and a SMRPG song or two.

Monokuma from Danganronpa: given the source material, we for sure won’t get a playable character, I mean come on it involves teenagers murdering each other and getting executed in disturbing ways. But a costume of Monokuma would be dope

...speaking of TWEWY...

How is this unpopular? There's like, a 2% chance that they'll be playable so why not make them better Mii Costumes? We'd also get classic Sonic music that isn't Green Hill Zone that is actually good.

EDIT: Never mind, most of them are a bop. Though they do all belong to the Green Hill Zone of their respective games (except Scrap Brain Zone) and two more music tracks could help fix that.

I just want any sort of Hollow Knight content in the game, I recognize that a character is borderline impossible, so I'm actually hoping we're going to get a Spirit Event at one point. A Mii Costume would obviously be even better, especially if we get a song along with it. Digimon is another one, maybe when Survive comes out (still scheduled for this year iirc) it could get a Spirit Event.

I'm being a bit nitpicky here, but can anybody tell me the appeal of playable geno?
He's a character from a classic title with a cool design who has practically been abandoned due to the legal tangle he finds himself in, so he has a combination of sentimental value and an underdog status that makes many people cling to him. Gameplay-wise he could have a pretty cool gunner playstyle that incorporates SMRPG's timed hit mechanic, in fact I'd say that'd almost be a guarantee should he make it considering that was the major thing that SMRPG brought to the table that has stuck around in Mario RPGs since. There are a lot of reasons to want other characters than him considering he's competing with other Mario and Square Enix characters, which both have many popular options, but there are still plenty of good reasons to want him in despite his obscurity.

He was apparently planned for Brawl once, and that’s it, from what I can gather
Geno was highly requested long before we knew that was the case. Sakurai speaking highly of the character has certainly gone a long way towards reviving his fanbase, which basically laid dormant throughout the Smash 4 days, but his initial surge in popularity in the pre-Brawl days was simply because a lot of people found him appealing, as well as SMRPG being a very nostalgic game to a significant portion of the speculation community at the time, as there were a lot of people around back then who grew up with the SNES.

Seeing as he's a Mario character that's owned by Square-Enix, games like Smash Bros. are basically his only opportunities to appear again in any kind of video game unless Square-Enix and Nintendo collaborate for a proper Mario RPG sequel. Also, his abilities and appearance stand out compared to the rest of the Mario cast, which is likely why he's got so much more demand compared to Mallow, who's in a similar situation.

In my case, it helps that Super Mario RPG was the game that got me into RPGs to begin with, but that's more of a personal reason.

*shrugs* He's pretty neat. I couldn't tell you all the nuances of his character, but I believe its because he stands out as one of the more reserved characters in the Super Mario series (I'm pretty sure Rosalina is the only other one). He also has a nice moment pretty much right after he joins your party that establishes him as a hero figure.

The only way you're going to get a good feel for him yourself though is to play or watch Super Mario RPG. Chuggaaconroy did a let's play on it, though it's one of his older ones so it means a slightly different personality and not so great mic quality.

He was apparently planned for Brawl once, and that’s it, from what I can gather
I feel that's a bit disingenuous. It may have helped, but it can't be the only reason. Like, Banjo & Kazooie were planned (or at least considered) for Super Smash Bros. Melee, and people wanted them on their merits as characters. Likewise we know characters like Toon Zelda, Toon Sheik, and who we assume to be Plussle & Minun were planned for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the Chorus Kids in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3Ds/Wii U, but support for them is pretty much nonexistent.

He's a character from a classic title with a cool design who has practically been abandoned due to the legal tangle he finds himself in, so he has a combination of sentimental value and an underdog status to him that makes many people cling to him.
Some of these reasons seems subjective, I had played the game, yes, but I just don't get the appeal of him. He's overshadowing the game for me, honestly.
In my case, it helps that Super Mario RPG was the game that got me into RPGs to begin with, but that's more of a personal reason.
That's fair. I respected both of your opinions.
The only way you're going to get a good feel for him yourself though is to play or watch Super Mario RPG. Chuggaaconroy did a let's play on it, though it's one of his older ones so it means a slightly different personality and not so great mic quality.
Eh, I did played the game you're speaking of but...I dunno, he seems overhyped.
