I really don't think Sakurai lacks respect for Waluigi, or outright hates him as others would have you believe, I think if he had always been extremely highly requested then he would probably have been in Ultimate's base roster, but the thing is that his popularity only really boomed to such an overwhelming extend right before Ultimate was officially revealed. Sure, he's always had some requests, but he was mostly just one of several Mario requests before, in fact I'd say that Toad, who still isn't in either, was more requested for Smash 4 than Waluigi was, and even before that Waluigi still wasn't a particular standout (I remember Bowser Jr. being more requested for Brawl, but I suppose that depends on where you looked). Like, does anyone remember a huge meltdown when Waluigi was deconfirmed for Smash 4? No, there were some disappointed people of course, but he simply wasn't popular enough at the time for there to be a riot over him not being in the game.

It's not like with Ridley who was one of the biggest requests for both Brawl and Smash 4, yet was still passed over, in that case it was obvious Sakurai had some issue with the character. With Waluigi I just think the timing of his newfound popularity was bad, and then the fact that the Fighters Pass turned out to only be 3rd parties has obviously held him back even further. I'm not sure I'd say that he's a frontrunner should Nintendo characters be back in the running for the post-Pass DLC, it's really difficult to say how they'd handle that, but if any AT is getting an upgrade I do expect it'll be him.

In the end, despite Waluigi's popularity, he's really nothing more than a spinoff roster filler character. He just doesn't have much significance outside of simply...existing. And unlike Daisy, who's main saving grace is the fact that she can be essentially a glorified alt costume for Peach (they don't even have any gameplay differences at this point), Waluigi would require a fully unique moveset. I don't think it's hard to see why Sakurai doesn't think he's really worth the effort, despite all the memes.

If Waluigi became a major player in either Mario or Wario, or just got his own spinoff series that was decently successful, maybe things would be different.
I still don't get why people see "spin-off only" as a detriment when the Mario Kart series on average sells more than the core platformers. Just look at MK8D vs Odyssey.

A Mario Kart mainstay is absolutely going to be a bigger character than most other Nintendo characters.

"Assists are disrespectful to the characters!"

Meanwhile Assists be out here like
That literally means nothing. What, you think the developers that license their character out to be in Smash Bros are going to talk crap about it? They got a bunch of money from that, of course they're going to cheer for it.

If they felt it was disrespectful they'd say no though. Not to mention I remember popping off like that and when seeing a bunch of other ATs

I sincerely doubt anyone on that team would be talking crap about their lil' guy who started with a humble Kickstarter getting the first ever Indie assist trophy in Smash. Do you honestly think their hearts didn't skip several beats when Nintendo asked them to let him be in? Before you say they didn't, yes, they did. Not everyone is a constant downer claiming to be "realistic" like some people.

Having ANY hand in Smash is a big deal. Just one game earlier, Commander Video being a trophy was a pretty bizzare happenstance, but no one ever thought it would go any further than that back in the day, I'll tell you that much. Now one is an assist, and one got more publicity as a Mii costume than an actual fighter.

That's besides the Assist Trophy into DLC point, but the fact that people still think certain things can't happen is beyond my comprehension.

I just don't understand the mindset that AT's are disrespectful. Not every character can be playable and any way they can be squeezed into Smash, especially in a manner that isn't just a sticker (like before) or a spirit seems respectful to me. Bomberman being an AT at first made me a bit sad but then again I just felt joy Bomberman got in to some capacity at all. Blessed moment for the little guy.

Not every character can be playable
Of course that's true. But they shouldn't have a problem with using a new phase of development to improve on how a character appears in Smash, especially when people who go "I want the complete roster/need it for tournaments" outnumber those who'd go "Bro, you just posted Nintendo character! You are going to loose dollar!"

The thing that bothers me most is that, if I recall, the creator of Bomberman passed away the week that Ultimate was revealed, and I saw people saying Bomberman being an assist was an insult??? I understand it hurts not having your character make the bigger team, believe me, two of my top tens are assists, but how does that in ANY way do anything but respect that man's legacy? It's insane to me.

What I WILL say is that the way they handled the final reveals was pretty dang poor. I don't know what compelled them to keep characters like Isaac and Shadow a secret for so long, especially after introducing things like echoes in Shadow's case. I feel the longer people waited, the more antsy fans got.

Don't know exactly where I'm going with this, but I guess I just think assists should be at least mostly laid out from day 1, at least returning ones, since Smash 4 and Ultimate has shown assists are certainly capable of making the jump to playable status, which gets expectations stirring.

Yeah, I don't think Sakurai is being disrespectful, or at least he's not intending to be disrespectful.

Despite what the fandom says, being an AT is a pretty big honor. We've seen many ATs come and go, including more notable ones like Isaac and Tingle. Waluigi has been here since Brawl, which makes me think Sakurai is trying to acknowledge Waluigi's existence in the next best way to becoming a fighter.
Yeah, in a fighting game where the main appeal is playing as your favorite character from different series it's such a great honor being an summon that no one has control over just to be an NPC. Everyone knows that NPC are great for Fighting Games. Especially when there's a 1 in 59 chances of summoning that character, it's the best.

Seriously, Assist Trophy items suck. In other fighting games that have characters that aren't playable you at the very least have the option to select which character to use and when to summon them. Smash Bros never gives you that option.

It's like if all the Street Fighter V fans ask Capcom to put Sagat in the game, but instead they made him a background character for a stage and expect people to be happy with that.

You mean like Capcom does with a vast majority of their stages in Street Fighter, the Vs. Games, etc? Rather than complaining, I see people RELISH being able to see little cameos from characters they love. Because other fighting game fans understand you can't have everything.

Sounds like a you problem. And try to actually research a series/company before using them as an example.

Two things. Being a Background character in A fighting game like SF isn't seen as a death sentence like being an AT is in Smash. Second, People were disappointed with Alex being a Background character on the NYC stage. Had he not already been leaked at that point, it probably would have been far more vocal than it actually was.

Do you even grasp how impossible it would be to fit everyones favorite character in a single game? Even Street Fighter or other games can't please every fan, every time. Yeah, a character becoming an Assist is a bummer sometimes but you are asking the impossible. Not everyone will be satisfied with any games final roster. You've seen with your own eyes on this site alone just how many different characters people claim are 'their favorite'. Not even Smash could accommodate this many demands to satisfy everyone.

Not having my most wanted even represented at all in Smash (Turok) stinks but it's nothing to be bitter over. Because realistic expectations on what can realistically be achieved.

Okay fine, I don't get why Sakurai should make anymore characters playable. Instead they should just keep putting characters in as Assist Trophies and background character because everyone loves the cameos so much. No need to put in work for playable character, just have a picture of them show up and everything is great.

Fun way to pass the time, I assume we can't include Assist Trophies since this was spawned after a discussion on assists. So, here we go:

Nintendo
:ultmario:: Toadette
:ultdk:: Dixie Kong
:ultyoshi:: Shy Guy
:ultwario:: Captain Syrup
Sorry, Jimmy T., my heart belongs to another.
:ultlink:: Wolf Link & Midna
Ganon from Zelda 1, ALttP, or ALBW isn't a spirit. Midna is an Assist Trophy but Wolf Link isn't, checkmate.
:ultsamus:: Kraid
I wanna put the SA-X here, but, surprisingly, it's not a spirit. JDCabrera's idea for a playable version of the baby Metroid is cool, but Metroid is an Assist Trophy. So is Mother Brain.
:ultkirby:: Bandana Waddle Dee
:ultfox:: Walker
I think it'd be funny getting a playable vehicle, plus Star Fox 2 and Zero give it a decent amount of abilities.
:ultpokemontrainer::ultpokemontrainerf:: Partner Eevee
:ultness:: Ninten
:ultfalcon:: Jody Summer
:ultmarth:: Caeda
:ultpit:: Viridi
:ultolimar:: Louie
:ultvillager::ultvillagerf:: Tom Nook
:ultlittlemac:: Doc Louis
:ultshulk:: Fiora
:ultinkling::ultinklingboy:: Octolings

Ice Climber, Game & Watch, R.O.B., Wii Fit, Mii, and Duck Hunt are fine as-is. Get smoked, Polar Bear / Condor from Ice Climber and Pet from Wii Fit.

Third-party
:ultsnake:: Raiden
:ultsonic:: Dr. Eggman
I didn't choose Tails even though Knuckles and Shadow were both out of the running? "No way, I can't believe this!"
:ultmegaman:: X
:ultryu:: Chun-Li
:ultbayonetta1:: Jeanne
:ultsimon:: Trevor Belmont
Trevor's design should be a mix of both his original NES appearance and the Netflix show. His Final Smash should be like Shulk's where he summons his friends Grant, Sypha, and Alucard to attack the opponent. Otherwise, I'd put Sonia Belmont here to spite Koji Igarashi for exiling her cuz he thought there shouldn't be any female Belmonts, but she's not a spirit, oh well.
:ulthero:: Slime
There are no spirits of the female heroes of Dragon Quest III and IV, or spirits of any human Dragon Quest characters besides the playable heroes and Eleven's party members for that matter, and I think Dragon Quest XI should stay with only Eleven playable. In that case, Slime is the most obvious choice left.
:ultbanjokazooie:: Gruntilda
Would be cool to have a traditional fairy tale witch style of character playable, to contrast Bayonetta's much more stylized take on a witch.
:ult_terry:: Geese Howard
Geese Howard would be fun. Would have been cool if Rock Howard was a spirit to represent Garou: Mark of the Wolves, but he's only a stage cameo.

-Poor Pac-Man. Ms. Pac-Man isn't a spirit and the Ghosts are already an Assist Trophy, lmao.
-Cloud as well, RIP.
-The only Persona spirits are the other Phantom Thieves and the Velvet Room characters, I'd rather have another Persona protagonist or an SMT character, oh well.

Edit: I forgot the franchises without playable characters, whoops

Style Savvy: Shop Assistant
Sin & Punishment: Saki Amamiya
Chibi-Robo: Chibi-Robo
ARMS: Ribbon Girl, who is way better than Spring Man anyway
Psycho Soldier: Athena Asamiya

I rather have nothing than having a character being an Assist Trophy. It's a waste of development time and resources. Hell I would be super happy if Sakurai took all that time and money that would've gone into making Assist Trophies and just took a vacation instead. If most Assist Trophies reveal leads to disappointing reaction then would've been best to have made it. If they cut a character from being an Assist Trophy and just removed from the game nobody would be upset about it. Hell, most Isaac fans didn't give a crap about his absence in Smash . A lot of times nothing is better than something.

This is kind of nonsensical point considering most "tag team type summons" are just other playable characters and generally not special moves outside of a few instances, which Smash already has (Toad with Peach/Daisy for example). It's part of building up the world of your game, and dear god, do other fighting games leave out way more characters than Smash ever has to begin with.

Seriously Wynn, what part of "some people like assist trophies" or even "some people are fine with assist trophies or other roles" do you not understand? You don't speak for everyone and the newcomer thread isn't the place to keep bringing it up.

Everyone is this world like something that others don't, so I guess no one allowed to say anything bad about anything. Seriously, the excuse "some people like it," doesn't bloody matter. I may not speak for everyone but the people who do like Assist Trophies don't speak for everyone either.

I will also point out that there are games with dedicated Assist characters that aren't playable but allow you to choose those characters, such as J-Star Victory Vs.

He's actually doing better than a lot of AT characters judging by his thread activity.
That's hilarious. The Isaac thread barely updates, it's only has a handful of people, and nobody even talks about him. Isaac support dropped like a brick in the ocean.

And Smash isn't J-Stars or even Pokken. It isn't a tag team game, in that regard. It's a party game involving random item/summon drops. This is like quibbling that you can't always select what Pokemon spawns from the ball.

The fact you'd rather them not put items in their party game, items that can give characters that can't make the cut as playable (For whatever those reasons man be) and removing an integral part of Smash's identity since Brawl is, without meaning to sound crude, quite foolish and pointless. All to die on some hill of 'if you can't make them playable, don't celebrate them at all in a game that's about celebrating games'.

Neither is being an assist, since assists have been upgraded to fighters.

And Alex is a special case because SF5's starting roster was PITIFUL compared to 4 and even 3's rosters to a lesser extent. Had the starting roster been larger and the game not a flaming pile in its first year people would be far less vocal about it.

Smash does not have that issue, as we're around/past 80 characters.

For some bizarre reason she’s not. I literally have no idea why, it’s not like there’s legal issues because she’s in the Pac-Land stage, it would be so easy to make her an echo.
sadly, AtGames is a thing that exists, and they probably commandeered Ms. Pac-Man shortly after she was implemented into the Pac-Land stage

Yes, such an integral part of Smash Bros identity. So integral barely anyone talks about then, speculates, or even really acknowledged until it's randomly brought up. Look at all the fan art of Smash Bros, there barely any for Assist Trophies; and the very few fan art of Assist Trophies are the ones that basically make fun of the characters. People forget that Assist Trophies are really a thing, barely anyone cares. If they're cut no one going to ask for them back. Hell, most people play Smash Bros with the Assist Trophy items turned off. If Assist Trophies are such an integral part why are their reveals super brush off with little fan fair?

Not in the same game, which is the crux of this argument.

SFV is at 40 characters now and there are still people who want Oro and C Viper to name a couple. 40 characters that are not Viper or Oro isn't going to make people who want them any more satisfied. The same is true for Smash. I've wanted Ridley for 17 years and no amount of "Ridley's in, but not playable" ever satisfied me nor made me that happy. It's something, sure, but it's not what I wanted. Ashley being an Assist now doesn't satisfy me, I want her to be playable to give an actual full magic moveset that this game lacks. This want isn't exactly something that can be filled by throwing more characters in the roster. Based on the way Smash characters are chosen, most mages don't fall under the criteria to really be chosen. Ashley is one of the few that do check a lot of boxes.

Hell, Look at Blazblue. People have wanted Jubei playable since the first game back in 2008. People were legitimately getting pissed that characters like Bullet and Amane came from nowhere and were playable before Jubei.

sadly, AtGames is a thing that exists, and they probably commandeered Ms. Pac-Man shortly after she was implemented into the Pac-Land stage
That’s the only thing I could think of.
If it wasn’t for that, I honestly think she could have been the 1st echo for a 3rd Party series revealed rather than Richter or Ken considering she’s more iconic than both of them.

If Assist Trophies are such an integral part why are their reveals super brush off with little fan fair?
And why do they bother to disable certain ones on certain stages? You'd think that if a playable character would make all their hard work go to waste, so would disabling ATs because Dialga/Palkia will already distort the stage or they conflict with KoF Stadium's invisible walls.

Man, you sure know a lot about the play habits and thoughts of millions of players who likely don't frequent this board. You sound like you're citing your 'facts' from VERY tiny sources like Smash Boards or Twitter which in no way indicate the state of mind of countless individuals who enjoy Smash the 'normal way' as opposed to us tiny amount who play 'FD Fox Only No Items'. Wish I had your mystical insight.

"Hello everyone, Sakurai here. Unfortunately, we had no choice but to delay Super Smash Brothers Ultimate until late 2020, as we are hard at work developing full-length CGI reveal trailers for every single new assist trophy that will be featured within the game. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience".

Like, what do you want, dude? Is an entire segment within a smash direct dedicated to showcasing new ATs not enough "fanfare" for you?

For some characters, being an assist trophy is pretty much all they have at this point.

Case in point, Krystal being an AT is pretty notable considering how much Nintendo has basically tried to bury her and everything else related to Adventures, Assault and Command since like 2011.

Nah, Brah. I want a reveal trailer for every item and a detailed history of what game they are from or inspired from! Otherwise why have them in the game!?

They were considering putting her in a Star Fox Zero sequel if it was successful, but welp it bombed so I guess its back to rehashing Star Fox 64 for the 100000th time (which is ironically probably part of the reason why SFZ flunked in the first place, that and the awful motion controls). Thank God Donkey Kong Country Returns was actually good and successful so we could see Dixie Kong again.

I'm surprised people still use "not significant" as an argument against Waluigi when :ultpiranha: exists and their entire purpose in Mario games is to be jumped over. PP was never playable in any game before Smash. Joke character or not, it shows you don't need to be a significant character to be in Smash.
