Do you have a link to Sakurai saying that? An interviewer did say that to Sakurai but his response to that was along the lines of, "I am not really sure about that, however, I do think that Nintendo has created barely any new characters in recent years."
Trela has every lucario beat except maybe junebug. so I'm not ashamed of that.

Considering how much they have been revamped compared to their original incarnations and how they were barely recognized up until Brawl's release, they can basically be considered new characters. They had barely any support before Brawl was released, whereas Ridley, K. Rool, and Dixie Kong did.
Rumors were running rampant about a TLS and Xeno NoA release. I'm betting we get it in 2012.

Yes. Probably the only one of the forbidden seven I would say SHOULD have been in Brawl, not just could have, or waited until SSB4 like Dixie.

Agreed on Ridley. I think that the emphasis for SSB4 should be put on representing Nintendo's smaller franchises, since we've only really lacking Ridley and perhaps a third Donkey Kong rep, although thrre are plenty of awesome characters for SSB's veteran franchises as well.
