Ness is so much out. Sakurai had planned to replace Ness with Lucas since Melee, but since Earthbound 64 got cancelled, Ness took his job back. Now that Lucas had made it, and has most of Nesses' moves , it just says " Rest in Peace, Ness".

Dreams nothing.

Ness will return, and I will have my third Brawl "I freaking told you so" moment over half of the internet.

Victory shall be sweet.

And I am totally not a Ness fanboy. xD

On February 10th I'm going laaaaaugh so hard...

My perception might be flawed due to the supremely crappy night I just had, but now I'm actually getting the feeling that Ness might be in.

Someone punch me, please.

I think Ness is still in...

Why?

Because Sakurai is not an idiot and is not going to dissappoint a fanbase by removing a long-standing character. Is he unlockable? Highly Likely.

My Guess is, Ness and C. Falcon returned to being hidden characters along with Jiggs and Luigi from the original.

Ness for brawlz

More like Sakurai is not an idiot so he won't include Ness.

You have to be completely idiotic to include both Ness and Lucas at the same time.

*ahem*

What Luke Groundwalker is trying to say is that you are mistaken, as Lucas is very much alike Ness in all regards, and that it's most likely that Sakurai's actually trying to please more fans of the actual franchise of Earthbound by keeping its representative updated, especially considering the popularity EB2/M3 has in Japan.

... Luke, stop being right. It doesn't go well with your image.

Ness and Lucas share 3 similar moves, PK thunder, Pk Magnet, and PK fire.

Sakurai has already expressed that Lucas' PK fire does not work like Ness' which would result in its use being completely different for combos and strategies, PK thunder works exactly the same for both of them.. just like how Mario and Luigi have the same up b (No im not saying Ness is as important as Luigi). Lucas' PK magnet goes infront of him, while Ness' surrounds him.

The reason they have similar moves is because as stated by Sakurai "they are from the same family of PK users"

Although they are from the same franchise but not the same time period, this can be debated by the inclusions of other FE characters from a different time period, or if Link and WW LINK were both in brawl.

Ness is not out just yet, and I hope he is still in.

PK Fire is not "completely" different, it was just improved. Methinks that had Lucas never appeared, Ness would have that PK Fire.

I *HATED* it going diagonally in the air. And now we can SHPKF!!

It also arches when it connects, instead of becoming a pillar of fire. There is no reason for these differences if Ness was axed.

They look similar, and it looks like their style is very similar, too. All the changes that were made are improvements, it seems. The way I see it, all the moves Lucas displayed so far work just like their Ness counterpart except with different animations and mostly improved effects.
And it's not like a character's moveset hasn't changed during the transition from one Smash to another... Ness didn't have the sparkles in 64... DK had many similar moves... and so on. Of course, you could use that argument to support Ness, but I'd really prefer it if you don't?

If I was Sakurai, and I decided that the Mother series deserves 2 reps in the first place, I wouldn't even consider having two short chubby PK-power-using kid protagonists with largely the same abilities and looks. I'd go with one of them and a villain, or one of them and a sidekick with different abilities. And Sakurai is not as unpredictable as everyone likes to claim. The man is still a game designer, not Santa Clause.

I guess its a good thing your not Sakurai, or else the game might have some ounce of fail.

The arching is also something Ness could've gotten. It just seems improved overall, and changes Ness would've gotten.
I actually like Ness' Pillar of Fire more. Ness could have gotten it, but I really don't see the point in these changes if Ness was gone.

Not to mention he'd piss off 90% of the American EB fans. It just really doesn't seem like a good idea on Sakurai's part.

If Luigi and Mario can exist in the same game being as similar as they are, I see nothing stopping a 2 game veteran from returning.

R.M.B. were else?
if you guys think ness is in, with all the possible moves lucas could have gotten and been unique. why did they give lucas a move set so similar? not only that, but with ness being the veteran, why not have him shown first? this combination is realy what got ness, cause so far every single time before this we saw the veterans(of their series) before the newcomers.

Except Captain Falcon.

Why would they show Ness anyway? They know from a marketing standpoint that this gets people talking.

Which gets them publicity. Ness will return, mark my words.

Samurai Goroh before Captain Falcon disproves your argument. I agree somewhat with the move similarity, but what moves would they give Lucas?

samurai goroh isnt a PC, if he was, AND had a similar moveset then captain falcon would be in the same boat. but, samurai goroh is a AT, he also uses his sword, so no captain falcon doesnt disprov it.

I just can't see CF being an unlockable... notice that CF and Ness were the only unlockables moved to starters. Why? Probably because they had unique franchises. If CF is not a starter, that doesn't mean only one less starting character, but one less starting franchise.

So I still believe CF is a starter. For now. December 15th might be the only thing that can change that.

it is possible for captain falcon to be a unlockable, but I doubt it. I wouldnt be suprised if all the unlockables from SSB1(except for ness) are made unlockables in this game though, as it seems it might be made this way.

I'm starting to wonder how many of you know that Sakarai's original plan for Melee was to replace Ness with Lucas. But then Mother 3 got delayed.

If anything, Ness is going to be a normal Trophy.

I knew. But replacing him after he got such a fanbase is not only bad from a marketing standpoint, it also goes against his statement of making this a "fans' game"

Again, you people come out with your "expertise" on the "marketing standpoint". Do you honestly believe that removing Ness will put a dent in sales? Heck, I would even argue that sales will go up since the annoying child is gone! OK, that last sentence was uncalled for, but seriously, marketing has nothing to do with Ness. If it were Mario, maybe, but Ness is not as significant as you play him up to be.

Check the handicap update, then get back to me.

Dent? No. But seriously, there is really no reason to remove Ness.

That's BS, no way around it.
After being a 2 game veteran of the critically acclaimed best 4 player series of all time, he hasn't gained any marketability? No way in hell.
