Today at my local used gaming store, I got Ocarina of Time and Paper Mario for my N64.

So far I've only played OoT out of the two, and I've only gotten through the first dungeon. But man, I was hit by a wave of nostalgia from the moment I saw the opening screen. Hopefully I'll be able to play through some more (along with starting Paper Mario <3) tonight.

(Also, I literally JUST realized that the two games I got were the same two UL streamed the other day. Wtf.)

Haha. nice. I played DK64 for the first time in years just a few weeks ago. Man. Nintendo was good back then.

You only got them because UL streamed them.

Luckily, I already have OoT thanks to Masters Collection. So I play it on my wii from time to time.

I miss DK64.

What highfive said. Nintendo... actually had awesome games back for the 64. I feel their newer stuff is rushed out, and caters more to the 5-6 year olds.

I mean, 10 years after playing ALTTP and OoT, I still love them both more then TP. All TP felt was.. "Oh.. better graphics, and a few kickass items." but just didn't give me that "wow" feel that I figured I'd get from it. IMO the Wolf parts could've been better incorperated rather then "catch bugs" over and over, which led to extremely repetitive and boring gameplay.

I'd much rather solve the basic 3 block puzzle. :3

Inorite

When I said I just realized it, I mean I JUST realized it. I didn't even watch UL's PM stream, I just remembered people saying he did while I was typing the blog. XD

I got it the other day, and I'm actually thinking of returning it because I'm a n00b :(

I agree, somewhat. I think Nintendo still has spouts of epic games from time to time, but their newer work just doesn't shine as much. Maybe it's the nostalgia, maybe it's me being older than I was back then, maybe it's just that they truly are working less and less to appeal to fans and more and more just to get money.

Y'know what? Scratch that.... It's definitely the last one. >_>

Hear, hear. Even a person as bad as I in terms of gaming ability likes a challenge.

Thanks for reminding me of the one major drawback of OoT i.e. Navi. :bee:

Hey! Listen!

maybe it's just that they truly are working less and less to appeal to fans and more and more just to get money.
QFT.

IMO:

Starfox64, Pokemon Stadium+RBY, Legend of Zelda OoT+MM, DK64, Perfect Dark, 007 Goldeneye, (the first Racer I ever liked, Rush64), Kirby64

SNES:
Nevermore (<3), A Link to the Past, Gradius 3, Killer Instinct, Kirby's Dreamland, like 99009093094 other epic games.

Gamecube:
Melee (Release)
Super Mario Sunshine (Release)
Wow, that's might coincidental.... both came out EARLIER rather then LATER?

I've had similar experiences to Susa's with the newer Zelda games. I've only played PH once, and it was enjoyable playing with the stylus, but felt uninspired compared to the others. But the other two recent-ish ones that come to mind are Minish Cap and TP. Neither of them really grabbed me at first. MC in particular was pretty meh to me at first. But on the second play, I really enjoyed it. But I recently started replaying TP, and it really is a great game. OoT got me young, and nothing can beat the childish wonder it gave me, but TP would have the same effect on me if I were that same age when I played it first. Once I got into it, and let myself enjoy it rather than compare it, I liked it a lot better. I'm loving every second of it on my current playthrough. I do agree that the wolf parts are somewhat lacking in the beginning, but I enjoyed being able to use the wolf form freely in the second half of the game.

tl;dr of that is that the modern Zelda games are better once you stop comparing them too much to the older ones, which is hard to do. Also, doesn't work with PH nearly as well.

I do love my N64 more than any other system though. Oh god, the nostalgia. So much fun, and so many classics. DK 64 was indeed great, though it suffered in my eyes for coming after both Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie, and being similar to them, especially Banjo. I still love it though. To this day, when I'm wth my sister and there's a banana present, there's a very good chance that one or both of us will say "oohhhh, banana" like in the game when one appeared. Fun times.

Edit: Navi was awesome. You don't even know. She just wanted to be your friend, but did you pay any attention to her? Only when she practically forced you to. Poor Navi. :D

I left out gameboy games I enjoyed. :3

Gameboy Color:
Poke Red/Blue/Yellow
LoZ: OoA, OoS (Seasons/Ages)
**** it, I liked them all practically. <3

Gameboy Advance/SP:
Basically same story.

DS:
WTF IS THIS I DONT EVEN KNOW, HANNAH MONTANA AND BLUES CLUES!!!??!

tl;dr
I've only liked Scribblenauts really. <_< Back when both screens on my DS worked, I ONLY used it to play SP games. (And all my friends at school have an R4, so I get to mess around with a LOT of DS games still. :s I still hate 'em)

The 64 remakes for the DS were good. :p But wait... came from 64? HAS TO BE GUD!

EDIT:
Banjo-Kazooie
Mario64

How could I forget those? I MEAN ****?

So true
I just bought a N64 because of that reason.

I personally hope that the Wii in a few years will be the same.
They are reviving old stuff and you will be able to count of awesome *classics*.

LoZ: TP
the new LoZ
SSBB
Starfox Battle for Corneria
Pikmin 3
Punch Out
Endless Oceans
Wario Ware
Kid Icarus Wii
Fire Emblem
Metroid Prime 3
Metroid other M
a Sonic game that stands out when lined up to the many others
and who knows what else that might come out.

I personally think that the more classical series are pretty good now. The GCN f'd up though, but the Wii looks like they might be doing things different.

When you look at the GCN hardly anything stands out.
The Metroids were good.
LoZ: WW was dumb -_-
Starfox was dumb (except for Adventures) (although its multi player was god like)
SSBM was cool
Pikmin 2 was awesome
Mario Sunshine
Fire Emblem
and that is about what stands out in my head.

Just about the only game that was really really fun other than SSBM was Lord of the Rings the Third Age.
Final Fantasy LotR mix for the GCN right there.

:EDIT:
The GBA was AWESOME!!!!!

It had PKMN, Boktai, Golden Sun, Fire Emblem, Megaman Z Zero and Battle Network( ah, the memories), Metroid, Kingdom Hearts and others that I cannot remember. :x

My ego...It's OVER 9000!
Please don't hate me for this:

PS1: Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and Bomberman games

PS2: Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Gran Turismo games. Oh, and Kingdom Hearts.

I owned a Gamecube, but it didn't have the appeal like blowing stuff up in the Ps2 games. When will they release Kingdom Hearts 3? It's been 4 ****** years, lol.:falcon:

Edit: I remember falling in love w/ Smash 64. Starfox Assault was ok too...

N64 didn't come out during my "childhood."

My first console game was Super Mario Bros.

My first computer game was on a Commodore.

I always thought that PacMan was an amazing invention. It used the same stage for every level; the game just got faster. Genius, I say.

I also remember Tetris on the original Game Boy.

They don't make 'em like they used to. >:

OMFG I should kill myself. RIGHT NOW.

How could I leave out old-school SMB? D=

****, old-school had to many epic games to EVEN REMEMBER.

ps:
Gamecube:
Tales of Symphonia

Wii:
.... yep, even the sequel to ToS wasn't good enough to make my all-time favorite games. (I'm ignoring my fan-boy bias and love of Marta).. the game itself was like 5 steps back from ToS.

The day I got an already very old NES (as a gift) was the greatest moment of my life. :]

Super Mario Bros. and Dr. Mario were the best.

would be terrible with a sequel.

It was a great game, but a sequel just wouldn't work.
I think it has good potential for wii controls. I don't see how a new one would be bad, I have faith that Nintendo could pull it off. The game could just be when they go back to a different set of islands and it would be everything that everyone loved about the first game but with more interactive environments and more islands to explore

Oh my god. Where do I start, from the top of my head:

Big bold games were my absolute favorites.

- Super Mario Bros 1, 2, and 3
- Super Mario World
- Metroid
- Metroid II: Return of Samus
- Super Metroid
- Pretty much every single Tetris game on the planet
- Pokemon Blue (my very first Pokemon game)
- Pokemon Gold
- Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2
- Pokemon Snap
- Super Mario 64
- Super Smash Bros
- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Goldeneye 007
- Mischief Makers (this game needs a sequel so badly)
- Jet Force Gemini (the Gears of War of its time)
- DK 64
- Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
- Extreme-G
- Extreme-G 2

My scariest memory was playing the sewer level on Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. I was only 8 years old back then at the time and that level scared me so bad because of the Dianogas and their roaring. The really dull lighting, the constant water trickling, and the brooding music didn't help :(.

My most nostalgic games:

SNES:
1. Super Mario RPG
2. Super Metroid
3. Secret of Mana
4. Super Mario World

These four games remain to be three of my favorite games of all time. I still play through them every once and awhile.
Super Mario RPG's soundtrack gives me some of the best memories. I absolutely love that soundtrack.
Super Metroid is one of the most important games to me. I think that was the turning point for me and video games. After that, I really got into games. I still play through it. In fact, I played through the game two nights ago. Incredible game, one of the best in the world.

N64:
1. Super Smash Bros
2. Goldeneye
3. Perfect Dark
4. Ocarina of Time

Some of the greatest times of my life were with these games. I still have a score sheet from "the golden game" of SSB. Me, my brother, and two friends played a 12 hour long tournament. Some of my best memories.
Same goes with Goldeneye. Massive game sessions with friends, getting super frustrated because I sucked. Great memories. Same with Perfect Dark.
Of course Ocarina of Time. Same reasoning as anyone, I suppose.

Sega Genesis:
1. Sonic and Knuckles
2. Toejam and Earl

Not much to say. Just two of my first video games ever. Bring back memories of my old house and neighborhood.

PS1:
1. FF8

First game I got into on a deeper level. First game that had a story that really sucked me in, and taught me that games can be more like a book, and definitely deeper than I had thought.

I grew up on GBC and N64. Later, GBA and Gamecube.

GBC:
Pokemon R/B/Y/G/S/C
Pokemon Trading Card Game (seriously, so dang good. Top 5 favorite games of all time material, for me.)
Oracle of Ages / Seasons
Wario Land 3 (I honestly can't remember which one it was, I'm just guessing)

N64:
Paper Mario
Mario 64
Super Smash Bros.
Ocarina of Time
Banjo-Kazooie (Oh god you guys don't know the half of it, so many memories)
Banjo-Tooie (not as much, but still good.)
Bomberman Hero
Mario Kart
Diddy Kong Racing
Pokemon Stadium

GBA:
Pokemon Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald (oh man...my favorite gen xD)
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
Pokemon FR/LG (I guess, never played them too much..)
Mario + Luigi: Superstar Saga

Gamecube:
SUNSHINE (A lot of circumstances behind it, plus memories! I'll tell you the details later, maybe in my next stream)
Melee (oh the look on my face when I found out this game was competitive in 2006)
Wind Waker (sad circumstances behind this one ;( )
Mario Kart: Double Dash!

Too lazy for more, you get the idea. Wii games I don't really consider my childhood, but if anything Mario Galaxy tops the list.

Quiet down, Grandpa!

The games that I really remember from my childhood are Earthbound, A Link to the Past and Donkey Kong Country 2. We had these friends that used to get tons of new games, but they sucked at them so they would always give them to my brothers and I to beat. So that's how I played those games, along with countless others.

A game we actually did own was Street Fighter 2. I loved that game, and I'll never forget that one of my uncles was visiting from Georgia. It was the first time he played the game, and he managed to perfect me. After that embarrassment, I said, "Never again." I would lose other matches, but never by perfect again, not in SF 2 at least. I wish I could say the same for SF 4 :(

EDIT- Oh crap, I can't believe I left out Super Mario World and Super Mario RPG. We got SMW for Christmas, and we stayed up all night playing it. Super Mario RPG was another loaner from my inept friends, and even the first time I played it I knew it was magical.

Also, I remember an obscure puzzle game named Zoop. It was so good, but so hard. I think I never got past level 27, and there were 99 of them.

Bomberman Heroes was so much infinitely better than Bomberman 64, simply because in Heroes, Bomberman can JUMP and he has a true health meter.
That's what ruined it. Bomberman's not supposed to jump!

Bomberman 64's ridiculous bomb-jumping puzzles were what made the game great for me.

That's exactly the thing. I have no faith that Nintendo can pull off anything nowadays, to be perfectly honest.

- Metroid
- Metroid II: Return of Samus
- Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Zero Mission
2. Super Metroid
THANK YOU. This thread needed some more Metroid love. Especially Super Metroid love.

(Seriously guys, a thread about awesome retro games and it took until post 19 for Super Metroid to get mentioned? For shame, guys. For shame.)

I would list off my favorite retro games, but I don't think anyone would read such a long list...so I'll just end with this.

NES = Win.
SNES = Win.
N64 = Win.
Genesis = Win.
Sega CD & 32x = Win.
SegaSega SaturnSaturn = Win.
Dreamcast = Win.
Game Boy = Win.
Game Boy Color = Win.
Game Boy Advance = Win.
Game Gear = Win.

(Other retro consoles/handhelds = Win as well, but those are the ones I own. With the exception of the 32x/CD and the Saturn, but I own a CD game and have played it on a friend's CDX, and the CD/32x are expansions of the Genesis, which is awesome. And I've played the same friend's Saturn, and it's simply win anyways.)

Pac-Man 2 is highly underrated.
Awesome Possum is not, in fact, awesome (which in turn makes it awesome).
Phoenix Wright isn't retro but is one of the few new games which is basically as epic as one.

PREPARE FOR SAPPY STORY:

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.
As a child, I really wasn't prepared for this game. I was enjoying it about as much as every other game, but then I got to Sniper Wolf. GOD I hated that *****. I couldn't wait till I got to kill her. The things she did, they were clearly designed for me to gain a large amount of hate towards her. Then, came her boss battle, long and irritating boss battle. So when I got the kill, I was incredibly excited to have beaten her, jumping for joy as I sat down, easily one of my video game emotional heights; little did I know my next was right around the corner.
She then went into a horribly sad monologue about her life, and why she fought. Then, to make matters worse, Otacon comes out, crying, "What was I fighting for?! What was she fighting for?!" I couldn't help but cry, I felt so guilty for having taken pleasure in killing her. Looking back, it was clear that this was Hideo's plan, to set up my joy of defeat, then to grab me by the soldiers, slap me in my face, and say, "What's a matter with you? She isn't a sick person, she is just a soldier, she is not an enemy, just someone who ended up on the wrong side of the payroll."
Most powerful experience I've ever had in a video game.

What age did they let you do stuff?
I got a ds at 11, but only for brain age. Eventually I conviced em to let me get mario kart, and from there they were pretty cool. But I didn't get a wii until last year and i didnt have any consoles before that.

Holy **** I just remembered this game, It was so great...and really hard :urg:
Swimming through the ocean as a badass dolphin...seemed so great back then
Too bad I never finished it though
Yeah, the first Ecco was even harder. Both are awesome, though.

I have this game both for Genesis and Sega CD. Boxed for Genesis, complete and in near-mint condition for Sega CD. =D

cool stuff. I remember using mario ddr as bait for my mom to get us a gamecube. It worked:laugh:

Heres a few of mine off the top of my head that were HUGE in my life.

Sonic Adventure Battle 2: I didn't own any console and I played this game at my best friends house at least once a week over a matter of years. This was the game that solidified my friendship got inspired me to get a console, later on I played all the greats and they are amazing :p (Ocarina of TIme is the best game of all time:p)

Super Smash Brothers MELEE: Melee has played a more important role in my childhood than any other game. This was the game I played with EVERYONE and I began to play it with my fiends about 5 years ago. This game made me friendships that have lasted for years and it was a game that we all prided ourselves on playing and took seriously. I can't fit all I have to say in this post.

Super Mario Sunshine: Easily one of my favorite games of all time. This game was incredible in so many ways, but my favorite thing about it was the tropical setting and new enemies and characters. This was the first game I completed on my own on my gamecube w/ out the help of friends.

Animal Crossing Wild World: This game was one I played heavily in 5th grade w/ friends and opened my eyes to new kinds of games. More things I could say but I've typed too much already.

Professor Layton: This game was spectacular; it had a great soundtrack, memorable plot, cool characters, etc. The most important thing it did was change my view on life. I honestly completely changed after this game. I see things as puzzles now. What used to be the boring work of school that I could easily do but didn't feel like doing, became new puzzles for me to solve. It has helped me in so many ways.

Well those were a few of the big ones but I may have left other's out. I like to see all of your guys's stories because they are all so different. :)

Genesis = sexy and loveable
~Sonic 1- fun, but inferior to
~Sonic 2!- best Sonic game I've played, and just so fun
~Sonic Spinball- super-fun for a quick session
~Sonic 3D Blast- also lots of fun, though the lava boss screwed me over all the time. Diagonals were hard to deal with on the Genesis controller
~Aladdin- one of the best movie-games I've ever played. loved the hidden stuff.
~The Pagemaster- no one ever knows this game, but I love it. throwing eyeballs ftw.

Game Boy = massive and loveable
~Link's Awakening- took me 5-6 years, and I love everything about it.
~Tetris- what needs to be said has been said countless times
~Super Mario Land 2- so stupidly easy for the bulk of it, but endearingly so, in a way.
~Qix- minimalist magic

N64- Every time a bell rang in the mid-late 90's, a kid got an N64. Yes, it was that heavenly.
~Ocarina of Time- I've waxed poetic about this game at length multiple times in the Zelda thread and room. Best game ever. No question, no doubt, no competition. I am a proud fanboy.
~Majora's Mask- what a worthy follow-up
~Super Mario 64- jumping bliss with coins
~Banjo-Kazooie- the epitome of platforming whimsy. Love it.
~Smash 64- love it. best party game ever in those days.
~Star Wars Episode I: Racer- the reason Episode I is better than II is because of pod racing, and this game in particular.
~Star Wars: Rogue Squadron- Naboo Starfighter for the anachronistic win
~everything else I owned for it- almost as good

GBC - I have a Yellow one, and I logged more hours on it than probably any system before my Wii, with Brawl.
~Pokemon Gold- while everyone has a bunch of pokemon games, everyone also has that one. You know which one. The one that you loved more than all the others. Gold was that game for me. Hundreds of hours gone into that game. Only Brawl has more, and that's not even necessarily true. It's one or the other, but since I kept restarting Gold with new, epic, Game-Shark-built line-ups, I'll never really know.
~LoZ: Seasons and Ages- Took some time, but they grew on me, and I love them. Played Seasons much more, cause we got it first by like a year.
~Super Mario Bros. Deluxe- first time I owned SMB in any form. very classy.

Anyway, I didn't get a Gamecube, GBA, Wii, or DS for a while, so they aren't part of my childhood. There was a huge shift in how I saw games between middle school and high school, and these systems came in high school or later. Perhaps it's a side effect of aging, but I refuse to accept things from during high school as retro yet.
