>_> Hello new Kirby person.

I usually rush in to meet new Kirby mains whenver I find them across the boards.

So to start off let me point you in the right direction:
Smashboards Mentorship Program; where you can find ppl to assist you in learning characters by way of mentorships.

Kirby General Discussion Thread; where you can meet others around the world who main Kirby and talk about random stuffz

You're currently in the question and answer thread where you can ask Kirby specific questions relating to Brawl.

Feel free to look around the Kirby boards as there are guides to Kirby and Match Ups that will assist to help you advance your Kirby.

Good luck!

Edit: And yes your sig is working and it's awesome lol.

Hey everyone, I'm a newly registered user of the boards but I've been lurking here for a while. I want to get into the competitive scene so I'm hoping I don't become annoying by asking constant questions, I'll post some videos up later so everyone can see where I'm at.

As for my 'kirby question', a friend of mine plays as pit and my match ratio vs him is somewhere around 60:40, him. I have the replays on my wii so that everyone can see what I'm doing wrong but I need to find someone to record them for me until I buy a capture card. My question is this, what SHOULD a kirby be doing against Pit in this MU?

Get Pit's power for one. Stay grounded and powershield a good amount. I'm not really sure abt that matchup though since I never play it.

You're in luck though! >_> We'll be going over Pit in our matchup discussion soon.

Wow, reminds me when I first started out. I had a friend who I practiced with who also played Pit. Verses arrow spam just mix up your approach/evasion with ducks, full hops and double jumps. Most of your air attacks cancel the arrows out (ex. N-Air, B-air). I'd like to see how the Pit discussion goes though!:bee: Hope you stay with us.

Yay, more Kirbies! :D Anyways, if you want specific MU tactics, it's best to go to the MU thread for that character. Once you get those videos recorded and uploaded I'd go to the Kirby critique thread and ask for specific 'player' and MU critique there!

As a general thing, though, Pit's ability is really good, so if you see an opening for inhale I'd definitely go for it!

Im new here to the whole SSBB forum and there are a lot of terms i dont quite understand such as Uair, Dair, and the terms of that nature.

My question is, Is the reason Kirby isnt higher in the tiers is because he is less played at the tournament level or because he is a weaker character?

I find Kirby to be quite strong and have always enjoyed playing him. He has been my main since regular SSB and ive never found an opponent I cant beat. Granted I havent hooked my WII up to the internet but there are many people in my town that play SSBB.

Whats the best way to get in to online play and does this place have a "friend code board" where I can find other people to play with so I can test my skills and see if im any good or not.

Lurking the Kirby Social thread with my rock buds.
Hi there, and welcome to smashboards :D .

Those are two of several reasons he's not that high on the tier list. There are only a few pros who use Kirby a lot, and so he doesn't place very highly in national-scale tournaments. His matchups, while not bad, don't give him the same god-advantage of the top tiers. Kirby is by no means a bad character (you're right -- he's strong), but just isn't broken enough to be placed in the S tier.

You'll get a lot of hate from players about Wi-Fi because it lags a lot. My only competitive experience has been with wifi, and I can honestly say that playing with people in neighboring timezones always has good results. There's always a tiny bit of lag after I input button moves, but I think it's hardly noticeable.

Smashboards isn't the best site for exchanging friend codes (though you can certainly do it in the Kirby social thread). I'd recommend getting an account on http://allisbrawl.com . It's a more socially-geared Brawl website, and once you're signed up (which is quick and painless) you can put up your friend code and go to the Free Play chat. From there, just submit a message something along the lines of "1v1 [Region name]" and find an opponent.

In addition to finding random opponents, I believe there's something like a mentor program that SWF started recently. I'm personally not a part of it, but it's a really cool program where you get matched up with an advanced player, play over wifi, and get tips from them. Two people on this board that are a part of it are Kewkky (local mod) and JoWiiCIDE, so you can ask them about it in more detail.

Hope everything works fine and that we see you around the boards :) . If you have any more questions, just ask away: the Kirby community are a friendly bunch.

Good stuff A1!

Hey there new member! If you want to find people to play with and exchange friend codes. You can start in the >>Smashboards Arena<<. There are also other places to find matches such as www.fsmash.org. Even though Wifi has it's lag you will find out how other characters play and gain some valuable experience you couldn't otherwise alone. Happy Brawlin'!

Oh, I forgot to add about your terms question. When people say things like Dair or Uair, they are usually referring to standard aerial attacks.

Check it out:
Uair=Pressing the attack button and holding up while you are in the air. This will result in your Up aerial attack.
Bair=Pressing the attack button and holding back while you are in the air. This will result in your back aerial attack.
Nair=Pressing the attack button and keeping the D-stick stationary while you are in the air. This will result in your neutral aerial attack.
Fair=Pressing the attack button and holding forward while you are in the air. This will result in your forward aerial attack.
Dair=Pressing the attack button and holding down while you are in the air. This will result in your Down aerial attack.

Then you have your tilts
Ftilt=Tilting the D-stick forward and pressing the attack button to perform your Forward Tilt attack.
Utilt=Your Up tilt attack.
Dtilt=Your Down tilt attack.

Well yeah if you didn't have trouble beating the people you play against with kirby in melee, then brawl should indeed be a walk in the park :)

Hey guys, nothing new but what do you guys think?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpLrPgES15c

I've gotten a few KO's doing that. It's pretty neat especially if you bait your opponent to a ledge attack or ledge drop mid jumped aerial. I'm not sure what it's called but I'll just call it a Pivot Slide Smash. I could've squeeze a bit more off the slide though. :ohwell:

Freakin' sweet Mike.

For the sake of everyone: How is it done?

For the sake of myself: Do you use default or is your controller mapped differently?

Thanks man! First, you have to initiate a run. Then after your fox trot animation (to prevent a dash dance), tap the opposite direction to turn around and run the opposite direction. Keep holding the D-stick to the direction you turned and while Kirby is still in his turn around animation, but before his running animation, tap the C-Stick the direction you were running before the pivot. When you do tap the C-Stick press Z at the same time to start charging and slide. If you don't press the C-Stick and Z button at the same time you might accidentally buffer a dash attack or dash grab. The distance you slide depends at how early or later you pressed the C-Stick during the turn around animation. Kirby's running turn around animation has a pretty nice window for you to get a nice pivot slide distance off of it.

My control scheme is all default; :) tap jump and all.

I hope my explanation is not too confusing.

In other words:

-Just run, in this case right
-When running has begun tap and hold left to turn around
-While in the turn around animation, press the C-Stick to the right and press the Z-Button simultaneously (at the same time).

Holding the charge will cause the slide.

-------------

I've also learned to do easier Pivot Grabs from a standstill doing this.
I just quickly tap the D-Stick, let it return to to center and C-Stick the opposite direction+Z-Button.

Yep, I'd call it a Sliding Pivot Smash, since there's a true pivot thrown in there while you slide. It's very nice, but for enemies on the ledges, I just frametrap them with a downB. :F

sorry if this has already been asked,

but what are some applications of kirby's spot dodge?

i never use it because i don't know where to put it in the mix of kirby's line-up of moves...

MikeKirby, I think that's just a failed doopwalk, although the wavedash slide is pretty long.

Jabu jabu, Kirby's spotdodge is used like all spotdodges...for avoiding moves? You can use it to avoid a grenade that's about to explode (slightly risky), dodge a grab and retaliate, or pretty much anything you can think of. I'm not really sure how to answer your question other than that.

Poyo, that's the most instructive Kirby guide I've ever read/seen.

Hmmm... Struggling with the Pit MU myself. The single most useful thing vs. Pit is to practice your SDI (vs ZSS too). With good SDI/teching, Dsmash becomes Pit's only kill move.

Mike, sorry to burst your bubble, but Samuraipanda found that a few months after the game came out. The most useful application I've found for it on Kirby (squirtle's is ridiculous btw) is to do a sliding Dsmash towards the PS1 ledge since it stagespikes ppl on or under the ledge.

And no A1, that's not what a doopwalk is XD

TRUE PIVOT! >_> I learned this from a D3 main who is a friend. It's sooooo useful.

Direction away from your opponent, Cstick towards your opponent and angled up + Z. It's so flippin' useful.

how so?

also i'm not sure where to find a thread on this; i remember seeing a video of chudat using inhale > spit out under battlefield > uair in some tournament match somewhere; is there more information about this technique? is the jump/uair buffered? i keep messing this up

@ Tekkie- There's no thread for it but I could give you a few pointers.

First off, when you're on the edge simply press away from the edge to let go of it, then jump towards the ledge while inhaling to get the forward momentum and height necessary for the UAir>Stage spike. Spit and UAir (I usually spam my cstick up after I inhale). It usually works on everyone around 50-ish percent.

Edit: And it's useful to True Pivot because it's faster than a regular pivot and sometimes you don't wanna allow too much time for opponents to react when they see you go for a pivot grab.

True pivots are veeeeeeery useful, but you have to admit that for many new Smashers, specifically Brawlers, it's technically demanding. People who've played other fighters or have played Melee before at a tourney level shouldn't have problems applying it in a match. Too bad Kirby can't use it much, since when he runs it's usually to shieldgrab anyway, and you don't need to do any pivoting for that.

I've really only ever seen Y.b.M. use that, and TBH I think it was mostly habit since he picked up Marth now.

Two questions:

As Kirby mains, what button layouts do you all use? Is there one that helps Kirby more than just the standard? Currently, all I have is Tap Jump Off and Jump set to Y. Should I expand on that?

Also, this is sorta a question, but not really. The DK boards have this MU thing called a "cheat sheet" which includes a post that has brief tips to fighting each opponent and the ratio. I know the Kirby board has a MU thread already, but I think this kind of "cheat sheet" would be really useful since the DK one is really easy to follow and very helpful both overall and in a pinch.

Here's the post I'm referring to: http://www.smashboards.com/showpost.php?p=10136335&postcount=2

Do you think this would be helpful and, if so, should it happen? I'm getting back into using Kirby and something like this would be really helpful in learning MUs efficiently.

I personally just use default. I've been using the same setup for years before brawl came out with melee. So I just use the same setup for both, since default works fine for anything Kirby would want to do anyway.

Kirby doesn't have any trick that need him to change the controller scheme, so usually we just turn tap jump off. Or leave it on. Or use Wiichucks (I know I do when I have no choice).

Screw all of these other guys.

I have tap jump off, X as grab and L as jump.

I like being able to double jump and aerial by pressing Y, L+ Cstick in succession (sp?).

X as grab makes pivot grabbing easier too imo.

Edit: And I have been neglecting the MU thread (which I'll get to this week) so if a cheat sheet is made, it'll be made later this year.
