The Official Ike Boards
Bi-Weekly Online Tournament
and Power Rankings Thread

Alright Ike Boards, it's time to find out where we stand as Ike players and have some fun while doing it! The premise is simple: I will organize and host an online round-robin tournament every second weekend, which anyone can sign up for, and every three months we'll add up the collective results and see which Ike mains are on top! It will be competitive, but it will be a great experience for all of us and very beneficial to newer Ike mains who can learn a lot from fighting the veterans first hand!

-----|-> The Power Ranking System <-|-----
The power rankings will consist of eight players, will be updated bi-weekly, and will be finalized on the first weekend of March, June, September and December. The power rankings will be decided by how well and how frequently each player places in the bi-weekly tournaments (see the section below for more information).

Remember that if you don't make it onto the power rankings, there's always next season! Just keep practicing and give it your best shot at each tournament. Everybody gets a chance to play everybody else since the tournaments won't involve elimination, so there's plenty of opportunity to practice against better players and improve!

And I encourage the more experienced Ike mains on the boards to attend these whenever you can, to help the newer players and to get to know the players in your community not just based on how they communicate in the forums, but on how they play the game first hand. Never judge a book by it's cover, you've got to read it's habits first! Terrible joke, I know.

----|-> Tournament Information and Guidelines <-|----
The way the tournaments will work is very simple. People will be allowed to sign up for a week prior to the event, and anyone is welcome, provided they understand the rules for the tournament (listed below). Once everyone is signed up and the time/date of the tourney comes around, the players will meet in a XAT chatroom created specifically for these events, and the tournament will begin.

For the week following the tournament, I will go over the win/loss record of each player and add them to that player's win/loss record from previous tournaments that season (if they have attended any before). At the end of each season, I'll take the collective records for each player that has participated in one or more of the bi-weekly tournaments and form the power rankings for the top eight Ike players that season.

~ Signing Up ~

Signing up for the tournaments will be very simple. I will update the post below the OP with the deadline date for sign-ups every two weeks, and all you have to do is post in this topic using this format:

WiFi Tag / Friend Code

There's no need to include what character you main if it's not Ike. The rules for an initial Ike ditto still apply if Ike is not your main though. Just be sure that if you sign up, you're there on time and ready to fight for your friends. If you've signed up but won't be able to make it, send me a PM to let me know.

~ General Information ~

The tournaments will be round-robin style, which means that each player will play every other player in one set, similar to how pools work for seeding in a larger tournament. If two players forget to play each other or do not have time, that is not a problem. The end results will use a combination of win to loss ratio as well as total number of wins to determine the rankings of each player (don't worry, I'll be doing all of that math, you guys get to just play).

The tournaments will be held on Sunday afternoons bi-weekly. This means that there will be roughly 7 or 8 tournaments each season. Until further notice, all tournaments will begin on Sundays at 3:00 pm EST and run until all sets are completed or all participants have to leave.

~ Specific Rules and Guidelines ~

Rules that are HIGHLIGHTED AND BOLDED are NEW and/or IMPORTANT.
  • Each set will be best 2 out of 3 matches.
  • Each match will be 3 stocks with an 8 minute timer.
  • Items will be set to 'Off' and 'None'.
  • Stalling is banned.
  • The character Meta Knight is banned and can only be used by either player if both players agree to it.
  • In the event of a time out, the winner is decided first by stocks, then by percents. If stocks and percents are tied, a 1-stock match with a 4 minute timer will be played on a random neutral stage to determine the winner.
  • Before a set, each player must strike 2 of the 5 listed Starter Stages, so that only 1 stage remains. This remaining stage will be used for the first match.
  • Both players must use the character Ike for the first match of a set.
  • The winner of a match may choose to ban 1 stage (Starter or Counterpick) so that the loser cannot counter-pick that stage. The loser then chooses any Starter or Counterpick stage to play on, besides the other player's banned stage.
  • The player who just won a match must play as a secondary character of their choosing for the next match in the set (however, see above rule for the Meta Knight ban). The player must announce their secondary character to their opponent before said opponent counter-picks a stage.
  • The player who just lost a match must play as Ike for the next match in the set.
  • The above two rules apply to matches 2 and 3 in any set. If the set goes to match 3, the loser of match 2 must play as Ike for match 3 and counter-pick after the winner of match 2 announces their secondary character.
  • A player may not choose to return to a stage they have already won on previously in the same set.
  • When the tournament begins, each player will be required to play every other player once in a full 2/3 set (no more than once). Players are permitted to leave early if they need to, but may stay as long as they like to finish their sets.
  • After completion of a set, players are required to use the Xat chat room's Private Chat function (not Private Message) to give the TO the score of the set in matches (ex. "I won 2-0" or "I lost 1-2").
  • The secondary character a player chose to use, if they were required to use one in the set, must also be told to the TO along with whether or not they won a match with said secondary character. If applicable, players are also asked to please report the secondary character that their opponent used in the set.
~ Stage List ~

This is the stage list that will be used for striking and counter-picking in all of the tournaments. As long as both players agree to play on a stage that is not listed here, it is perfectly allowed.

~ Xat Chatroom Link ~

This is a link to the live chatroom we will be using for the tournaments. In the event that more players arrive for a tournament than can fit in the Xat, we will use an All Is Brawl tournament chatroom, which I will provide a link for if it becomes necessary.

Plus you get to see all kinds of cool stats and records that I keep, so sign-up if you haven't yet and confirm to be there if you have!

Sign-ups will end Saturday, July 7th (Friday night) at:

12:00 am PST
1:00 am MST
2:00 am CST
3:00 am EST

The tournament will be held on Sunday, July 8th at:

11:00 am PST
12:00 pm MST
1:00 pm CST
2:00 pm EST

~ Sign Up List and Statistics ~

After each tournament I will add your win/loss statistics to your profile here. To view your statistics, simply click on "Show" beside your username and FC. I will be recording your total set wins and losses, match wins and losses, and a winning percentage for each. Additionally, any secondary character you have won at least 1 match with will be listed along with how many matches each character has won.

Motion to add Pictochat and Pokemon Stadium 2 to the Counterpick list.

Anyway, I'm down for any of the Friday slots. Probably Friday evening since the 'afternoon' time you have listed there is probably going to catch me during class time after summer.

Alright, good stuff so far.

@RiverDB - No worries about your location, there'll hopefully be plenty of players there at each event, so you're not likely to have bad lag with all of them. And thanks for the votes!

@Light - I can definitely add Pictochat in there, I actually was considering it initially. PS2 will need a bit more support first, lol.

@Palpi - Good stuff, even if you're not 100% sure if you'll make it to these, you can still vote on the date/time.

@Ussi - More support for PS2, I'm not against putting it up but we'll wait for some more opinions; same with Pirate Ship, I'll remove it if enough people want to.

@Mr. Doom - 10Ikes

@Reg15 - Vote on dem issues son. Just let us know the best date/timeframe that works for you on a bi-weekly basis, every vote helps!

@Niddo - Cool, it's looking like Friday evening will be the best so far.

If we get a good amount of input on this by sometime today, I may actually be able to start sign-ups and have the first one tomorrow or this weekend. If that's too soon for some people we can always do it starting next weekend though.

I'll make the vote thing a bit simpler;

To everyone posting:

Is Friday evening starting 10 pm EST favorable/doable for everyone? Keep in mind it won't be every week, and you don't need to make it to all of them.

We need PS2 there. Hey, if ya can't take Snake to PS1 because he's strike'd it, take him to PS2. :D

But seriously: nobody picks that stage, which is precisely why I want it on there. No other character seems to be exploring it: why don't we learn it and use it against them? I had a mild amount of success against a MK by doing this. By "success" I mean "I managed to avoid being three stocked by using the conveyer belt as a moving Eruption". I seriously think this stage needs to be explored, and I for one plan on CPing every time in this tournament. Unless somebody decides to be a jerk and strike it, in which case I hate you.

I agree with ya completely. This does need to be explored. The more I think bout it, no one really does go there xD

Dang... I think the problem with those times for others is how early it is, lmao. People on the west coast would have to be up and ready to play at 10 am to be there for 1 pm EST.

What if there was a compromise, so like...

How would 3 pm EST on Sunday afternoon work for everyone? This wouldn't be too early even for a lazy Sunday morning on the west coast, but it would also allow European Ike mains like GP to participate at a more reasonable time.

The only thing I think may be an issue with that is if some people go to church on Sunday mornings or something. But it'd only be a real problem on the WC.

Edit: Oh and it looks like PS2 is getting a lot of support, I guess I'll add it in.

Hmmmm idk, I guess I still could but can't he pull a all nighter and drink red bull? >.<

2pm CST eh? That should just work for me. Between Church and a later lunch because of it, I should be good to go at around...1 to 1:30 CST. lol

Well, if a whole bunch of people can't do it on Sunday, we may have to make it Friday evening anyways, but I'd rather find a time that works for everyone. We may end up having to settle on a time that just works for most people, which I don't like the idea of. :ohwell:

Good stuff. Later lunch though? We have lunch around noon here and dinner at like 6 or 7, so 2pm to 5pm would be perfectly between meals for me.

Edit: Oh and it looks like PS2 is getting a lot of support, I guess I'll add it in.
3pm, hmm, i can do this, seeign as it wont take too long, if people want you can move it forward another hour, so i start at 9pm, i can do that XP btw, youre now a legend, go buy yourself a shiny medal

if youre meaning friday night, no, not seeing as i have to get up at 6am to go to work (this is what happens when you dont get your money given to you by the government sadly)

EDIT: of course, if its unconventional for everyone to have it at a time that ISN'T friday evening, then that would have to be the tiem to do it, i'm only one member of the communtiy and im not exactly well established am i?

It's so much about being well-established. Everyone's opinion is weighted equally because I want as many people as possible to participate. And wow, if you did go out for the tourney at 3 am it'd likely make you late for work the next morning, lol. Harsh early work schedule is harsh.

Friday evening (starting 10:00 pm EST) <--i guess that could work for me
What about Sunday starting at 3 pm EST? If no that's fine, I'm just hoping everyone can do it on Sunday.

Lunch is later for me on Sundays because of when church is + drive time. Unless we stop at McDonalds (Ugh.)

I could agree 3pm, one hour earlier on sunday would be better for non-british EU's, but i could live with this.

Sunday's looking good so far. In that case we may definitely be able to do it this weekend because it gives a few more days for sign-ups.

Oh, and are there any other opinions on the double-elimination tournament for the top 8 players each season? I kind of like the idea as a more competitive event for the season's power rankers; but at the same time, I don't like the idea of excluding everyone who didn't make it to the top 8. I'm willing to swing either way based on your guys' opinions.

Thought?

3 P.M. EST Sunday is fine for me. (Any day of the week is fine for me actually since it's summer ;O)
Also, +1 vote to remove Pirate Ship. ;-;
Tourney for PR'd Ikes is cool too.

Hay. Why don't we space it out a bit? Getting it all done in 1 day doesn't seem too reasonable for a WIFI tourney.

And it should be a little more than bi-weekly. Maybe every month or two.

Awesome, thanks for the input. Not looking good for Pirate Ship, lol.

Well, I considered having each one on multiple days but the problem is that some people may be able to show up for one date/time but not the second. Remember that each person's win/loss records get added up over the season, so even if there are 15 people and 3 hours isn't long enough to have everyone fight everyone else, there's still the next tournament.

I think bi-weekly will work; obviously nobody has to sign up for every one, you can skip as many as you want and you may still qualify for the PR if you did very well in the few you attend in a season. I think bi-weekly events makes it easier for people who maybe have to miss one, because they don't have to wait too long for the next. I'm the only one whose workload it increases, and I don't mind, lol.

Update: Instead of a 'vote' it'll be easier if you guys just say whether or not you can be there at these times:

Friday evening from 10 pm EST to 1 am EST.
Sunday afternoon from 3 pm EST to 6 pm EST.

Sunday would be better since EU Ike mains could attend as well, but unfortunately we'll have to go with whatever time the majority is okay with. Sunday is looking good right now though.

i also add a vote to remove pirate ship, those bombs are pretty ***gy. and a competitive tourney for pr'd ikes only sounds pretty good, of course i need the uk to sort out its prankings but theres a slim chance of me being in top 10 (came in joint 9th at the most recent tournament, which was a national)
also dont worry gaiz, i dont lag with americans...but i lag really badly with my smashbuddy who lives 10 miles away from me, go figure XP

Alright, I've removed Pirate Ship from the CPs. Seems like the PR seasonal tourney (I think I'll call it the Playoffs, lol) is favorable too. This is shaping up to be pretty good, thanks for all the input so far guys!

Usually PRs are top 10 yes. I decided to go with top 8 here because of the Playoff tourney at the end of the season.

Lol, good stuff. I'll probably end up CPing Frigate on most people, I love Frigate. I'll also CP Japes occasionally but definitely not on you :bee:

I think even if we agree on a better day/time for later events, I will host one this weekend on Sunday afternoon and see what kind of turn-out we get.

Also, a little note to you Nysyarc, using a Xat won't be a good idee if there will be a lot of Ike's, b/c a Xat can only hold up to 20 people, and I think about the CP's that PS2 should not be on it and Pirate is doable, but that's me.

If more than 20 people will be there, we can use an AiB chatroom. Hopefully, there will be one free.
