wow dudes.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/122/1223403p1.html

yeah, apparently Rich fell in love with Project M, so much so that it is a feature article on the front page of the site. about a year ago,Rich did say he had a plan of doing a huge joint venture with us guys here on Smashboards so we could become more recognized-could this be the beginning? :awesome:

Soooooo glad Project: M (and sort of Melee as a result) is getting the attention it deserves. Everything the P:M crew has done really and truly is groundbreaking in every sense of the word.

It really is. I played it and was shocked at how well of a job they did at getting the physics to mimic melee's as well as how well done the adjustments to the characters were. The differences in the physics that are there so far don't seem that bad either and I kind of like that its not the exactly the same as melee.

Not sure how this would fall under legal definitions, Kish. To the best of my knowledge, they are not infringing on any copyright law by creating codes in Ocarina that cause the game to mimic Melee. Maybe someone more tech savvy like Alt F4 can provide some insight.

Often times you don't need to actually have the law on your side. A company can sue people to the point where the legal fees force them to surrender. Even if they are absolutely within their legal rights, this can happen. I recall Sony doing something like this to the creators of "Bleem!", a Playstation emulator.

Considering P:M makes no profit and you still need the Brawl disc and a wii to play it there should be no problem.
Also Project M is very fun and I am looking forward to its future development!

If I were in the PMBR, and I got a C&D order, or any kind of legal document sent my way to the effect of asking me to stop, I'd send a very polite letter saying that the project actually increases profitability by giving players who never bought a Wii or Brawl a reason to do so now, and if they want me to stop essentially creating a Nintendo game for free, that's their call, but in their own interest, they should seriously reconsider.

But I'm not in the PMBR, and there have to be at least one or two reasonably intelligent people at Nintendo's legal/financial departments who have figured that out already.

pretty much this.

when Viz sent a C&D to Mangastream to stop putting up stories they owned, it actually had a negative effect on them promoting Alpha. but Nintendo is pretty neutral with fan Projects anyway, since the only times they took action were against a doujinshi and a Pokemon MMO.

nice, i hope all the uncompetitive/casual brawl players stick to this cuz it's way sicker to play than brawl.

I'm going to go ahead and call it the greatest game I've played so far in my life. It's what everyone thought of the very first time Brawl was announced. We all thought "Melee with more characters holy ****!" Well...we didn't get in in 2008 and it has been a long time coming but finally melee has a worthy squeal.

Essentially...Sakurai forgot to mention one last delay. that would make...6 in total?

I saw the article in class on my phone and immediately read through the whole thing. Melee even got a mention with it's tech skill and competitiveness as the reason the project is being made so it's win win for us. GJ IGN.

lol they'd just tell you to stop anyway. so naive.

PM is overall excellent, so it's a good feature. i still have some minor issues with it, but then again i also haven't played the latest version in a while.

I bought a wii and brawl disc solely for the new P:M demo.
I'm not disappointed.
there are a few differences in terms of physics, but nothing that creates a problem.
I still prefer melee, but P:M is amazing.

I would like a few more stages though ^^

Until the Cease+Desist.

As much as I want to be excited, I am so pessimistic about this.
IIRC the only time Nintendo was EVER out right telling someone to stop doing something was stopping R4 from producing cards.

As far as I know, Nintendo has never sent C&D letters for hacking or mods. Even Super Mario World hacking has been going on peacefully for over a decade, plus you HAVE to pirate a copy in order to use those hacks AND it is one of the (if not THE) most widely hacked games of all time.

I think we're safe.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo sent a C&D on the fan-made Zelda movie that was released a while back.

Anyway, I'd like to point out that while tedious, it is theoretically possible to distribute copies of P:M that do not include any copyrighted content. I'd also like to point out that Nintendo has done very little to stop any sort of game modding, and P:M will likely be no different.

There are more stages but they coincide with the Brawl stages. In short, unlocking stages in brawl will unlock more stages in Project M. Or you can keep playing Vs Matches till you get everything.

But that demonstrably interfere's with Nintendo's profit potential. With P:M it's arguable it would improve Nintendo's sales with enough promotion.

Yeah, that's my logic as well. I wasn't using it as evidence to support the potential of P:M getting a C&D, but instead just as an example of Nintendo taking action against fan-made content.

really glad to see project m get this mainstream coverage

To be honest when I first heard about Project M I thought it'd be a waste of time. Make brawl good? Impossible. I stand corrected

keep up the good work dudes

Wow, when this is done I hope they'll have tourneys for it, I may buy a Wii for this as long as there isn't a ridiculous difference in character potential :)

While I wish it were possible to change sound effects and the like to get it even closer to the feel of SSBM, what they're doing so far is... admirable. In just a couple of video sit throughs, I've become almost a complete convert to the project. The only thing holding me back are the disdainful memories of Super Bash Sisters 3.

But I've gotta say....... the way Sonic moves with the new physics and such is almost EXACTLY the way I pictured him to be as a character in SSBM/a true Smash sequel. His speed and combos finally compensate for his lack of KO power, as it should have been. Marvelous. (':

This.

I CANNOT stand the Announcer in brawl, nor the crowd when someone is sent flying. It's just so much less intense for whatever reason. but whatever, im probably ganna buy a wii and brawl just to play this game, even if I have to play it on mute.

I know they refuse to disclose a release date, but what is everyones guess? im thinking another year and a half...

Well there was more than a year gap between demo 1 and 2. They have said that they plan to release a demo 3 when possible, and they may even release some downloadable content characters in the next few weeks if they are ready (ZSS and samus are possible).

But there will be NO balance changes at all until at least demo 3, they want the metagame to be allowed to develop

Yes, and also the punching and hitting sfx in Brawl are really horrible. But thankfully someone made a .brsar file for Melee SFX.

You can't replace that file for Melee SFX with the Hackless version, right? I would kill for some Melee skins. Everyone looks so ****ing ugly except the more cartoonish characters (like the Pokemon and Toon Link).

Fox

oh god

Believe it or not, Brawl Fox is exactly what Nintendo wanted Fox to look like. When HAL made Melee, all they had as a basis for Fox was the triangle-headed Star Fox 64 Fox, so they took their own direction with his design by making him look like a realistic fox. However, Nintendo gave Fox a more permanent design in Star Fox Command, complete with concept art and everything. This became the basis for all future iterations of Fox.

To be fair, Yoshi looks like a piece of crap in Melee, lol.
