That's awesome, man. I'm doing my master's in English. What's your field of interest or specialty?

Yeah, I think my punctuation was alright, haha. Capitals become useful when sentences become more complex, or when proper names approximate regular nouns. They also help signal a new sentence, but I'm sure if we stopped using them altogether we'd get good at doing without them in the beginning of sentences.

:phone:
didn't really specialize beyond my double major in english and philosophy. i'm not planning on doing a master's anytime soon, but i guess that would be when i'd have to specialize. york didn't really have people specializing in things for an undergrad. how's your master's going?

well yeah, that's the thing, we already have punctuation marks to give sentence breaks. capitalization at the start of a sentence is almost always redundant. it does make sense for proper names, but proper names just happen to not usually be confusable with other nouns, so it looks pretentious to capitalize names of people :p if it's a company or something, then i understand, 'cause there realistically might be overlap with existing words.

but more than anything else, i just can't be bothered to hold shift.

That's definitely something for me to think about. I suppose capitals were useful initially as orthographical symbols. For example, I think that semicolons and colons used to serve as pretty complete syntactical stops (see Milton), so having a capital there would have been useful. And I believe that they didn't always use periods as we know them to break apart sentences, so the capitals would have helped there. I'm inclined to think they still serve a purpose now, but maybe they don't...

Master's is going well. Doing well in classes, profs are cool, cohort is nice, etc. Graduate work is very isolating, but hopefully that changes with my then-wife next year. There is a very good possibility that, if I end up doing a PhD, I will be going to UofT. It's sort of perfect for my specialty, which is early modern/ renaissance, esp. 17th century.
Paradise Lost is the best.

I always took that as a play on a child's innocence creating a moral dilemma where you have to ask; are you really Peach's savior?

But a quick google search of peach and bowser--ahh. Oh god...I suppose it is possible that they...

Is that so? You must not be reading anything good! Paradise Lost is incredible. The greatest piece of writing in the English language, imo. Then again, I'm a Miltonist.

Semicolons usage is often confusing -- how do you know when a dash would be a better option?

I play it by ear with semicolons/dashes/parentheses/I think there was another option

Also, it wasn't that I was reading anything bad, it was that I had to read GOOD things in the context of work and formal essay writing.

I've always wondered when I should use a hyphen instead of a semi colon as well.

So, Kyle. Can I send you my essays for you to edit? :D they're short.

Copy+paste from the Ontario Player Finder thread as recommended by SB veterans here--haha:

Hello my fellow Canadian Smashers.

Wondering if there are any Smashers out there in Toronto/North York willing to play on a regular basis with this Melee noob and teach him the ropes.

Fear not, I'm not coming into this hobby without any knowledge. I'm a long time Smasher and have followed the tournament scene on and off for years so I understand what's required for high-level play...I just need to practice. I put the game down many years ago and have recently wanted to get back up to snuff. I've moved away from my hometown of Brampton, away from all my Smash Brothers, and haven't met anyone in the city yet who takes the game as seriously as me.

I know how to do all the advanced techniques (well, most) like l-cancelling, wave-dashing, blah blah...again, I just need to practice; work on my execution and making these things an integral part of my game. I'm not expecting people to take time away from training for tournaments or anything like that--I guess I'm appealing to the up and coming Smashers in the area, those who may be around the same skill level or what-have-you.

I'm desperate! I love this game so much and want to get better but I have no one to play with!

So, let me know if there is a regular get-together where we could train. I would be happy to host as well. I live in the Avenue Road and St. Clair area. (Oh, and I'm not opposed to playing with a case of beer at hand.)

Thanks.

If Kyle is too busy/too extortive, I can edit short essays for you for grammar/tone/clarity.

I think dashes (hyphens) work better rhetorically than semicolons -- they draw attention and appear more personal. That's not to say semicolons aren't useful; they work well when explaining a point further, giving the impression of logical thought.

That's the same impression I got when I read things with hyphens as well. I tend to give it a longer pause and my attention is closely drawn to what was mentioned.

English gets really confusing to me though. One of my high school teachers told me that semi colons should be used more often than commas. I feel that isn't wrong since they're all used for a moment of pause but with varying timing depending on which you use.

I'll let you know when I finish my essay. It's quite short. Ranging from 50 words to 300 words only depending on which essay.

:phone:

Also, I love topics like these lol. Though, I'm no English major.

F-fifty word essay? Really? Your post was like 50 words lol; I'm guessing there's some sort of catch.

Edit: Diakonos, if you're going to apex does that mean Bam is driving you guys?

lol i can edit stuff for free too, i just want to have something to put on my resume. can't really put "edited dozens of essays for friends for free" even though it's basically the same experience.

i mean, you probably COULD use that many semicolons, but it would look weird and pretentious to almost everyone in north america.

That's the plan.

Link to the Facebook group? (I could probably find it, but don't want to try at work).

So the new guy should live around st. Clair west station.

Camilo, that's your area. Go play him.

I work near there too (I think it's on avenue road and bloor). Well right across from the ROM anyway.

I only work Sunday - Wednesday (sometimes Thursday) though.

Yeah, I'm fairly close to St. Clair West. I'm in this awkward spot between St. Clair, St. Clair West, Dupont, and Summerhill stations--hahaha. Still, it's only a 10-20 minute walk from the closest and farthest stations, respectively. However, street car service on St. Clair reduces travel time significantly if you happen to catch one.

I'm also willing to travel just about anywhere in the city if it means getting a full day of gaming in, which is possible most weekends for me. Otherwise, as long as it isn't too far, I'll come by even for an hour or two of Smashing.

Like I said, I'll post dates and times when I'll be available to host something in the near future. The holidays are always a hectic time, so I don't expect to get much gaming in until the new year.

I'm likely available the entire time between the 26th and the 29th for sure. Maybe even the weekend before. We'll see.

Don't be afraid to post availabilities, guys. Maybe I can work something around your schedules.

@unknown522: Where do you work? Obligations this weekend will see me near the ROM, incidentally.

Yeah, I'm aware of A&C Thursdays and I'm fairly close by. I'll try to come for the monthlies or whatever, but on Thursdays I'm usually in the east end playing board games. :)

Sucks having conflicting hobbies.

Anyway, yeah, that's why I suggested Fridays and Saturdays and thought I'd offer up another potential meeting place. No point in fighting for time on already crowded consoles when my Wii's gathering dust at home.

I understand, and assumed, a lot of people would have worked their schedules around A&C's, but still wanted to fish for other gamers in my area interested in Friday/Saturday gaming first.

Otherwise, might be I could come by a Thursday evening here or there, but it won't be often unfortunately.
