So I have gotten away with playing support through silver/gold (I started ranked back in November), but as a result I am at a loss for what to do when support gets called by someone else. Should I just grind in normals to learn mechanics that I should have learned previously? I specialize in peeling for ADCs, securing objectives, and getting vision. What role(s) should I prioritize in learning as secondaries?

I'm in plat currently (http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/44313054#ranked-stats).

Support/Jungle is pretty much what i do in ranked.

When i get other roles i pick Lulu (top/mid) or some marksman to synergize with my support.

Even as a support main, I know how to last hit a little bit. I just don't like solo laning.

What's the general consensus now on AD vs APen reds. I know pen scales better, but I heard that AD might be stronger earlier on. I also heard that pen is bad against dshield, but I'm not sure why that would be.

AD is better basically always. Minions, towers, jungle monsters, still does damage vs champions and scales with AD scalings, etc.
Armor pen is marginally better lategame but it's not really worth it.

I thought armour pen still affected towers and jungle monsters.

yes it does, it affects minions too but minions have like 1 armor at the start of the game

it's champ dependant, pantheon loves flat ad, while someone like Ezreal can take either, while Fiora/Trynd/Yay/Gangplank luv armor pen

I take armor pen on Graves.
Then again, my Graves build is atypical. I tend to go Bloodthirster into Brutalizer (eventually getting Ghostblade). Armor pen runes + Last Whisper + Brutalizer/Ghostblade, you practically do true damage to squishies.

its okay and does give you a large amount of damage with the active, but without the active it just falls miles behind other staple carry items

AD ratios, reliance on AAs and presence of magic damage are the factor I look at when choosing my red runes.
AD casters get AD runes, volibear gets arpen and things like GP and Cho get hybrid pen.

What about someone like Zed, who is AD but has magic damage from certain parts of their kit. I just take AD reds on him because he gets %AD bonuses from masteries and from his kit.

On the topic of Zed, CertainlyT is like my favourite and most hated designer at the same time. He's my most hated because he completely overloads his champ's kits with free stats, and they've apparently all had to be nerfed because of it. But he's my favourite at the same time because with the exception of Darius, his champions have really creative and complex kits.

Zed probably has the most mechanically complex kit in the game. Not because of the mechanical requirement to play him, but because of how many mechanics are in his kit. I'm still uncertain on all the specifics of his kit.

please don't take hybrid pen on zed, his magic damage is pathetic. That's about as dumb as buying magic pen on Fiora because riposte is magic damage.

BUT

IF YOU WERE PLAYING CORKI

OR KOGMAW

i could understand

you're forced to buy armor to deal with his physical damage

and forced to buy magic resist to counter his magic pen

AND forced to buy health after he gets his last whisper

wtf riot??

I'd probably try sorcs on Zed in a normal just because there no other boots that increase his damage.

Technically he counters health itemisation with the %health damage from his passive and BOTRK.

Alternatively you can pick from one of a shield, heal, barrier, the summoner heal, exhaust, zhonyas, QSS, hard CC and any spell that makes you untargetable to completely counter his kit.

Being untargetable (intangible?) completely counters kits?

You heard it here first
It's a particularly hard counter to a champ who only has a 3 second window to get a kill, and has no DPS steroids to keep themself relevant if they don't get that kill.

Aero- CDR boots are my standard pick, but they don't increase his damage in single spell rotation (eg. his ult).

Well you can't use your spells if you have no target. #rekt

Also please don't take Hpen runes on Zed lol. I can get behind arpen at the very least, but this guy has so many AD ratios (even on his W lol) that you should always take AD runes. I don't play Zed tho, except for that one time in one for all mirror.

If you want to get a reasoning think about how many times is split your burst. If you're an AD caster and your burst consists of 3-5 spells and an AA then you're better off with AD, while if it's mainly spamming AAs with AAs resetters then you should take ArPen.
The more your burst is split, the more flat pen becomes powerful since it's applied everytime you deal damage, it's extremely funny to run a 20 magic pen page on some champs like Morde, Cassio or Malz.

I think Shaya's point was that invulnerability counters all damage, and isn't a harder counter to Zed specifically.

Yeah I'm gonna stick with AD, just wanted to see what the consensus was.

I'm not understanding why flatpen is better the more applications you apply though. As I understood it, flatpen just meant that every attack ignores a certain amount of armour. It's not as if the penetration stacks, they still have the same amount of armour regardless of the number of damage applications. That line of reasoning is also seems to be in conflict with the fact that it's generally on AD casters who itemise for flat pen (ie. brutaliser), whereas DPS ADs like marksmen don't.

Ok I'll try to stay as simple as possible : resistance and penetration is calculated each time damage is applied, which means that if you deal 1000 damage in one spell the %pen and flat pen are applied 1 time.
BUT if you deal 1000 damage on 4 spells (250 dmg each), %pen is still applied 1 time while flat pen is applied 4 times.

Same goes for flat damage reduction vs % damage reduction, which is why Dshield is good against auto attackers but not that good against burst casters.

Edit : wait no I might just be ********, I need to do more maths.

Re edit : well disregard this post and and the previous one, I'm ******** and confused flat pen with flat damage augmentation. Now I need to do some testing to see if it's worth to keep my 20 mpen rune page or if it was just placebo effect.

this is incorrect. AD and arpen both increase damage regardless of when it's applied... the question is which increases it more.

AD is best for autoattack champions (namely, AD carries) and people like pantheon with really good AD ratios

armor pen is usually better on AD casters due to the fact that abilities scale mostly off of levels

think of autoattacks as 1.0 AD ratio abilities with crappy base damage and poor level scaling. obviously you're going to want AD for that, because the low base damage means you get a higher % increase in your damage when you use the AD scaling.

So guys, I'm in Silver 3, trying to hit gold before the season ends. Failed my promo for Silver 2 last night so i'm a tad salty. I'm best at top and jungle but i can't seem to find a champion that can carry me hard enough. Who should i constantly practice and get great with before going back into ranked. As a sidenote, i'd love it to be someone on the anti-meta side of things: trundle and shyv top is boring- someone with range and poke is better, like a top lane Swain.

@ Dude above me: whatever you're good with is what works best. Swain's good top, but definitely has mana issues if you're not careful. Quinn is a massive bully in top lane, easily one of the most obnoxious lanes in the game, and she has zero mana problems if you max E first since its cost doesn't go up. As for jungling, idk what you're good with. Xin's faceroll easy and really strong. Vi's strong. Amumu's strong.

Mobility or Mercs for Zed only. Lucidity no need cause he has low cooldowns lategame anyways, 5 from masteries, and prolly has Ghostblade/BC in build if he didn't get BT for 5th damage item for MORE pure damage.

CDR is actually a really big deal for Zed, moreso than other casters, because it affects how many spells he can get off in one W or R. 10% CDR allows for two Es, and max CDR lets you do three Es and possibly two Qs. Even just shaving off one or two seconds off a spell can be the difference between being able to cast it when your shadow is still up or not.

Speaking of CDR, what do people think of taking CDR, or something like AP (obviously not as Zed) against AP lanes. I've always taken MR but I'm not sure how essential it is.

I was actually trying out Quinn top but i couldn't figure out a build path that worked. I'd shut down their top laner but then they would come back during team fights and i'd be useless.

I'll definitely give this a try. For a build path I assume Hydra, Greaves, last whisper, blood thirster, and then two tanky items, so maybe randuins and banshee's or spirit visage?

Bare in mind that I'm only level 19.
So why is it that Master Yi seems so broken and overpowered in the games I play,
and yet I almost never see any pro players use him?

My friend told me that "Master Yi is OP" is the common n00b opinion,
but I can't help but think that when he wrecks my entire team every time I play against one.

Because people don't know how to itemize at that point. Heck, i didn't learn how to until i was level 30 for a couple of months. Randuins or Frozen Heart slow attack speed which is what Yi does best. Just wait until after he blows his Q to activate Randuins or else it's not going to work when he's untargetable. If you're tanky, build thornmail. Yi needs to get fed or farm up to be useful and he usually plays clean up during fights. Hard CC will also keep him locked up enough to be disposed of since he's pretty squishy. It's a problem when he split pushes though.

Ah, using the actives on my items.
I still always forget to do that.
I have a lot to learn.
If you want to learn that effectively, i suggest playing some support- between all the wards, your gold item, locket, mikael's, and randuins, there's a lot of actives to potentially use. And all the more times to forget to use them XD I can't tell you how many times i'll die and then say, "Oh crap, i had Hourglass."
