Getting your drivers license and driving

Sup. I just wanted to talk about driving tests and preparations and stuff like that.
I just got my drivers license this morning, and it was much less of a hassle than I thought it would be. I was worried for no reason.

How did you guys feel when you got your license? How early did you wake up, were you nervous, did you fail the first time? what did you do to ease your nervousness?

My test was at 8:30am, and I woke up at like 5 and couldnt go back to sleep because there was pain in my neck and it became stiff lol. I took out my DS and beat Ultimate mortal kombat 3 while waiting for the sun to rise. Then, I ate breakfast and practiced parallel parking in my front yard between my parents' two other cars (parallel pakring is required in NJ) Then I drove to the DMV. They had this little course where you just make a couple turns, parallel park, backup, k-turn and then drive to the end of the course, and he passed me.

Feels pretty good, now I can cruise down to local tournaments :)

Share your experiences. If I could give advice to new students, then it would be to pass the Drivers education class at school at all costs. You get your permit without having to take the written test at the DMV, and then practice practice practice for the six months as often as you can, on ACTUAL roads, and you will pass the test with a brease. And also don't feel bad if you don't pass on your first try, I witnessed at least 11 -15 people fail on the course over the times that I went there to practice.

I'll get my license next year (Or I'll be old enough to get it then anyway.
Need to be 18 in Finland to get one :/
)

Can't wait.

Seriously? Wow (Note to self: Do not go to finland for you license)
Yes, seriously..

Letting kids drive cars at the age of 16 is one of the biggest flaws in USA's logic. (Not to mention 14 year olds in some states *coughdakotascough*)

What do that young people even need a car for? Lern2bike/walk.

Once you're 16 you CAN get a job, so some people actually do need a car.

Also, I'm not really sure what's so magical about age 18 that makes it so much more logical. It's only 2 more years.

Well, it's the highest age rating for movies and games, where's the logic in that?
It's also the age limit for buying cigarettes/alcohol. (Atleast in Finland. Except stronger drinks, which are 21+)
And, it's the age limit for voting in most national elections.
AND, it's the age when one can get married without their parent's (or court of law's) permission.
And AFAIK, it's also the age when people can be sexed without being pedo in USA (That age is 16 in Finland)

By the same logic, you could say that it should be the age for getting a license.
I'm not the one that made 18 be the age that a person is started to be considered as an adult, I don't know what's so magical about it either.

All alcohol is 21 in the USA.

No, you didn't declare 18 the age where someone is considered an adult, but you're still saying that someone is more of an adult then.

AGE OF MAJORITY - The age when a person acquires all the rights and responsibilities of being an adult. In most states, the age is 18.

A quick google search gave me that.
So yes, by U.S.'s (most of the states') law, people over the age of 18 are "adults".

Edit:
The whole word "adult" is so scarce that it's really hard to define the difference between adults and just old kids. Is it an age or is it a characteristic?

If the law has pulled the line at 18, then I'll just use that when talking about adults and non-adults.. So I don't really have strong proof on my argument.

18 isn't adult age though.

It's just that, legally, your parents isn't responsible for you anymore.

When did I deny that 18 is the age of majority...?

All I said was that I don't see why it's totally 100% illogical to let people get their licenses at age 16. If someone's going to be a bad driver at 16 or 17, who's to say they're going to be any better at 18? The only difference is they have to wait longer to get their license.

Lucky Roach..
I'm stuck waiting until late November/early December before I get mine. I mean, I could get mine right now if I really wanted too but my mom wants me to wait until I have some more experience since I got my permit around june. Once again, my procrastination holds me down

Sorry about that.

I still think that 16 is too young to drive a car. (And that opinion may be biased thank's to local culture.)

But on the other hand, if it's about skill, then it would indeed be better to start 2 years before, so the person already has 2 years of experience by the age of 18.

adfgfgsd, I don't even know anymore.

I don't think age is an issue when you're getting tested for skill. If the person testing you deems you unfit to drive, you won't get your license yet.

Exactly, you can have the best personality, be friendly, and look / be mature. But if you don't have control of the car, they'll fail you right then and there. I watched multiple adults fail the test, one woman was at least 30.

I'm sorry, but the DMV I go to is ****ing horrible. They disqualify you on your driving test for some of the most trival things. I've been disqualified two times now, and I'm ****ed. I've driven on the highway, been on some of the bussiest roads in Fl, never have I been in a crash before, and I have driven for at least 100 hours by now. But noooooooooo, I'm unfit to drive because my dad lifted up the emergency brake up before we went to the DMV so that he could could get something that was under it and neither of us noticed. My dad drove several miles to the DMV with the brake on and he didn't notice a thing. So I'm disqualified for something that for the most part isn't my fault. I mean, I KNOW that technically it's my fault, but come on.

Really, the whole test is a joke. "Okay, just park inbetween the cones, k-turn, make a left turn at the stop sign, ect. and la la! You're now elgible to drive anywhere, including the the highway! Have fun!"

Here's my advice to those who haven't taken the test yet: Be careful not to get caught by one of there many disqualifiers. Chances are you'll faiil the test for something you didn't even know rather than your actual driving skills.

I doubt I could ever get a license. Compared to before I was born, there are more than double the cars on the road, 50% more car wrecks, and twice as bad of drivers (thrice as bad where I live in California). I won't last a minute behind the wheel.

The DMV in general is horrible, especially the wait times.

Anyways, truth be told, I loathe driving with a passion. I don't understand the people that enjoy it. The only thing it's good for is being able to go places when I want to without having to bum rides off of people.

Like, seriously. People are stupid, they suck at driving, and as such driving is a huge pain and can kill you.

I've had my permit for 6 months and I could probably drive from New York to LA by myself. Driving is so easy. I can wait to get my license.

I wasn't that nervous since I'd already been driving quite a bit before I got my license lol. Plus my driving test was lame anyway, didn't even ask me to parallel park.

Anyways, the more you do it, the easier it will become, don't sweat it.

confirmed. Sending Supplies.
I'm still learning. I've been trying to get a good feel for turning lately.

Driving isn't as much of a challenge as it is made out to be, but I wouldn't underestimate it, 2001.

Lol same I just recently got my Learners license.

I wasn't really that nervous, since I had done the practice test on the website like 10 times and passed.

But when I got there and finished the test I was one question away from failing -_-

When I got my license I was beyond nervous. By the time I got into the car with the examiner I had to take deep breaths to keep from shaking. I laugh at myself now because I only had to drive up and down the highway and a street, and bam, licensed driver. Im glad you only take your test once too, bcuz when you start driving on your own you develop bad habits that would have you flunk the test really quickly.

I have a question; to you guys in the US need to have been driving a certain amount before you can get a liscence? Where I live you need a minimum 120 hours experience (with a supervisor) before you can even take a test.

I was heaps nervous when I went for mine, and I almost failed it. Thankfully I just passed.
Now I drive to make money (pizza delivery).

Yes, but I think it's only 60 hours here. I'm not sure though. It's been a while.

Yeah, it was 50 hours, but they decided to up it cause too many young drivers were getting into crashes. Not that I think it will help at all, but whatever. 60 seems reasonable, 120 is just stupid.

I made the DMV lady swear during my drivers test. Apparently, I forgot to check my blind spot or some ****. They weren't allowed to talk at all.

The first thing she said when I finished was "Alright, I probably made you nervous, but you did pass." And then she told me to be better at checking my blindspots.

She also had gnarly coffee stained teeth.

As far as I am concerned, driving IS a pointless commedity in society, but for some stupid reason, I can be denied a LOT of jobs for not being able to drive, even the ones that incorporate very little driving in the first place (though living in the suburbs might have something to do with it, even though I can walk 5 miles rather easily). -_-

Bad drivers (such as myself), need to stay off of the road at all costs, but the inherent opportunity disadvantage entailed by an incapability to drive in my opinion is just employers adding another, rather presumptous hurdle, for people like me looking for employment.

That, and I if I had to cut back of wasteful consumption of energy in some form, I'd rather it be on something easily circumvented rather than something like water, heat, or electricity.

I have 1 more behind the wheel before November starts and then the test. I'm a pretty good driver, but the only car I can use for the test is a huge minivan :/ oh well.

i failed my permit test THREE times. lol.

the first time, i went right when i turned 15 and a half (thats when you can get your permit in AZ) and failed. i got discouraged so i didn't return for a longg time

like 8 months later i came back, determined to leave with permit in hand, but failed again... i was two questions away >_>

i came back like two weeks after and aced it! third times the charm i guess haha.

as for the actual driving test, i failed the first time because i had NEVER parallel parked before in my life hahaha. so i totally ****ed that up. but i learned quickly after that came back and badaboom badabing, i had my license :chuckle:

driving SUCKS. haha i hate driving, i wish i had my own chauffeur to take me party hopping every weekend. but i mean it is nice being able to go wherever the hell i want. kinda.

I'm going to assume you're Australian? Luckily I didn't need to do the 120 hours thing. Yay for the old system.

Also you can get a job here at 14, drive at 18 and drink at 18 though I would highly recommend avoiding the 3 together.

Why do you guys hate driving? Just boring I guess? Or I guess it could be nerve racking for some people I duno.

I love driving, cuz I love having the freedom to travel. I happily drive 14+ hours to visit a loved one. Even just driving to walmart makes me happy. I love bein on the road, I don't really know why but I guess the only reason I can think of is that I don't like being confined to a certain area and unable to visit the people and places I want. Road trips are the best.

I'm probably happiest when I'm cruisin around with the radio up.
