It's charming, but at the same time I am kinda jealous of the next gen consoles right now? This is the first time I've ever REALLY felt the disconnect between Nintendo and the other systems. I thought most Wii games looked great even compared to the 360 and PS3, clearly stuff like Mario Galaxy still holds up visually. Even with the Wii U I was always more impressed more by the consistent frame rates of stuff like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon than whatever the PS4 and Xbox One were doing at the time (Seriously, why did it feel like it took 2-3 years for last gen to actually start?). But we've reached the point now where we finally have consoles that are actually prioritizing framerates (or atleast giving options to). Actually seeing games like Miles Morales and Demon Souls running at 60fps is the most a game has impressed me in a long time, hell even "last-gen" stuff like God of War and Kingdom Hearts 3 not being stuck on machines that were underpowered at release back in 2013 is fantastic. And consoles actually adopting SSD's? Finally. Was just scrolling down through Twitter and saw these tweet from Geoff and upon thinking about it more, Nintendo can be quite the obscurely clever rival.
There was a problem fetching the tweet
Microsoft and Sony launch their next gen consoles, and here comes good ol' Nintendo, yet again defying what many in the industry may consider the "normal flow" of progression, and Nintendo launches their special edition Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary GAME & WATCH handheld. Sure, it's more of a collector's item, but the playful contrast is almost naughty.
Then I look at Pikmin 3 Deluxe still running at 720p 30fps and Age of Calamity's insane frame drops like
(it also doesn't help that I have a decent number of other issues with Nintendo, and that we don't really know what's actually coming out next year that is getting to me a little)
