Damn, SNK is quite possibly the most disappointing company to get a rep in Smash. Like, their series are fine, not my personal pick of games, but it just feels... anticlimactic to turn to them when there are so many other companies with large IPs that maintain consistent relevance on a broad scale. SNK has never meant anything to me other than a laundry list of NEOGEO re-releases, an occasional King of Fighters, and an occasional Samurai Showdown (Which is who I would suspect the character to be if we're getting one). Like, I guess, props for getting another classic fighting game character in... but you went over Tekken, Soulcalibur, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, hell, even Blazblue to go for SNK's already more niche than niche properties?
I'm not convinced this means anything, but just the idea comes off as super weird and out of character for Sakurai. Like, some people will call Persona 5 niche despite selling two million copies, but I don't think I've seen anything that implies any of SNK's titles have done particularly well (the only sales figures I can find are first week sales for a few games, and they're pretty low/average).
The only way this makes sense to me is if Sakurai legitimately blew the entire budget on the first three characters and SNK was the cheapest option lol.
Edit: Like I'm usually super supportive for almost any option for Smash, but just SNK doesn't come from a huge background or have that many IPs that are mainstream/that well liked. The NeoGeo itself was one of the more classic niche gaming machines and that's pretty much their legacy outside of arcades. Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters, and Samurai Showdown are all solid games... but just, to go from DQ to anything SNK is an astoundingly massive drop in quality and overall cross-over potential (which is something I hugely value with Ultimate). I could see how most other options make people happy, I don't see how any of these characters make many people happy except for like MaximillainDood on Youtube.
