I was heavy into the FFVII fandom way back... it's a blessing I got out (and grew up). I could completely understand why anyone would be turned off by the fans.

Me and my friends still joke about this kinda stuff still but there was a community once on LJ dedicated to Sephiroth where you couldn't call him "Sephy" because YOU WERE DISGRACING HIS ALMIGHTY GODLINESS.

xD lawd. You gotta just laugh when it comes down to it.

I'm a frequent roleplayer around LJ actually (still lazy on that front right now. gotta do more in my spare time for those), though I haven't seen that community before...

If I ever do though, I'm tempted to troll it. XD

"Sephy" makes me think of something that Spider-Man would call him if they ever met. :awesome: And Finalark, it's awesome to know that we could help you regain a perspective on the game outside of what the fandom has done to it over the years. But hey, even if you didn't like it past that, can't say I'd fault you for it either. Respect.

Good as it is, the one glaring flaw (which I bypass because I may not be a mindless VII nut, but I am biased lol, and I get most if not all of the story to begin with) was how mistranslated the game was at times.

.....

Civil, talkative, on topic most of the time, and light-hearted with debates. You guys are right. This thread freaking kicks ***.

TOPIC SWITCH

When I get back from WHOBO 3, I'm going to buckle down and replay Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. That and Dissidia 012 since that's coming out. But I absolutely loved what I played of IV's sequel. I stopped partway because I lost all of my save data by being stupid.

You're going to WHOBO 3? I'm probably going to end up going. I live down here after all.

Nevermind, gonna be out of town.

Forget this post.

Awww. But I don't wanna forget.

Sucks that you won't be there. I'm with San Antonio's hotel for this so I'll be practicing up with Espy and the group.

I recommend reading the novellas that entail a lot of what happens between the two years of the game and Advent Children if you haven't already. This series got milked, but when you read/know everything, it's fairly put together.
See, that's the thing with franchises like FFVII (and I think at this point it's more a franchise than a game). Of course it makes sense if you're a fan and you know everything. If you know everything about the Star Wars expanded universe the prequel trilogy makes sense, but that doesn't mean that the prequel trilogy aren't horrendously bad movies. Don't get me wrong, there are a bunch of good parts to Advent Children, and from what you've said, Advent Children Complete seems like an improvement, but the fact is that the games can stand up on their own enough that they don't need to be fleshed out more. Most of this fleshing out is just filling in plot holes anyway, but if you have such glaring plot holes to begin with then you need to go back and write it better.

I'm just really not interested in the Compilation of FFVII. I mean I haven't even beaten the actual game yet.

I guess part of my disliking of AC is because I watched it on UMD, which is pretty much the worst format to watch any video on. I know this because I later watched some of Advent Children rendered on a graphing calculator and it was much better visually.

That is very nice, but idk, I guess I just like the original Hymn of the Fayth more.

Me and my friends still joke about this kinda stuff still but there was a community once on LJ dedicated to Sephiroth where you couldn't call him "Sephy" because YOU WERE DISGRACING HIS ALMIGHTY GODLINESS.
I think Sephy is a dumb nickname too, but that's kind of going overboard.

You watched an inferior vague fanservice eyecandy movie on UMD.
Even if Advent Children Complete is more or less fanservice eyecandy on STEROIDS. lmao still has a good story this time, imo

I lol'd. To each his own if you don't like the compilation though.

[EDIT so sig isn't larger then post lol]

I didn't get around to playing The After Years tonight... Said I'd do it after WHOBO but I felt like doing it tonight. ...theeen avatar making happened. lol

I haven't gotten After Years yet. I'm waiting for the PSP version so I can play it on that.

The only thing I enjoyed from the FFVII compliation was Crisis Core and the action in Advent Children.

I never finished After Years. It was good though, made me long for FFIV.

I didn't even know about After Years until like a week ago -- I don't have a PSP, so if I bought the Wii scenarios, I'd be missing out at some point.. unless the PSP version is full 3D. Abomination to the game.

Just gonna say that I played through the DS remake a few weeks ago and IMO it's the best version of the game. Best game play, best translation, I just wish the graphics didn't make the characters look like they're all twelve. Aside from that, I enjoyed seeing the FFIV world rendered in 3D. I would have much preferred the remake was on the PSP running off of Crisis Core's engine but I guess beggars can't be choosers.

EDIT: Actually, it would have been awesome to see Crisis Core's engined used to remake FF7-9.

The DS graphics suck, like hard core.
I've never seen anything wrong with the DS's graphics. Ever. Obviously it's not as sophisticated as the PSP, but most game designers have the foresight to adjust the art style of their games accordingly so that it works out. There are also plenty of PSP games that look like dog **** because of the "Brown & Bloom" approach to graphic design. In fact, aside from the God of War games, I think that the best looking games on the PSP are sprite-based.

And again,
beggars can't be choosers.
I actually don't care about the graphics of most games. Like at all. If a game has good graphics it'll be a plus but I won't be actively turned off from a game if it has bad graphics. I loved the Wolverine game and its graphics were ***. I still love a lot of Wii games even though the rendering is about 10 years behind the rest of the industry. I also don't care about 2D versus 3D. Both can be done extremely well. I remember being disappointed that the quality of the DS cutscenes weren't as good as the opening cutscenes of those games, but that's very minor considering how the games were still great. There were some awkward moments where the transition from sprites to 3D wasn't fully seamless.

I'll pick up the DS remake of FFIV after the PSP one eventually since the PSP and DS versions have their differences.

I apologize, what I meant was that game's graphics sucked for the DS hard core. I really loved what they did in TWEWY. DS has potential, it's just that FFIV didn't do a good job of unlocking it.

I agree to a point. But it really depends on the age of the game. If it's considerably new and on a system that has proven itself to have great graphics before. My expectation will be alot higher than that of a game from the 80's. When I hear the words "remake" and "PSP" and see this pic,
I assume it to have an 3D engine close to Crisis Core.

I'm pretty sure that art was originally for the DS remake.

Also, I think that FF4DS did a great job using the DS' graphics. Sure, they aren't very good but keep in mind that the DS's 3D graphics are about on the same level as the N64. Which is why 2D games on the console generally look a lot better.

Given what they had to work with, FF4DS looks great.

That, and it gave us, imo, one of the best Final Fantasy soundtracks to be remade.

Next to VII's, IV's is my favorite of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h2V8CFtGZE

It's hard to decide what my favorite FF is after VII, tbh...

I'm torn between IV and XIII, though IV may have the edge in ways... GAH. Wish I didn't have to choose. So. I won't. I love most if not all FFs. |D

[EDIT]

Oh, can't forget about this either.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkx3KcO7TCs&feature=related The first villain to ever get a theme song, and is still the most stereotypically evil of them all to this very day.

Don't you know? Sony loves to milk their past consoles for as long as possible. Just look at the PS2!
:(Yes i know. I guess i knew the answer to my question before i even asked. I just get amazed at thinking of the possibilities had they made that and the new Dissida game on the NGP

If I may throw my 2 gil (and a Troll Lure augment >_>), I actually liked the art style in FF4DS for the most part. Some of the characters (Cecil, Kain, and Golbez (outside of his boss fights)) didn't feel right to me, but others (Edward, Palom, & Edge) fit the style quite well. I guess it could depend on how a character is potrayed during certain situations.

With that said, I find it more fitting to use in Final Fantasy V, since it's more light hearted.

I hated how the Ragnarok and Holy Lance were gimped in that version, though that's another topic entirely.

I second this. I really didn't mind the art style in FFIII, but in IV it kind of felt out of place.

Plus, growing up with the 16-bit version of FFIV and I imagined the characters to look like this (thank you deviant art):

As apposed to the cartoony versions of them in FFIVDS.

On that note, it is stupidly hard to find good FFIV fanart. Also, I want this clock:

I don't see why they didn't make the new FFIV completion remake on the NGP. Why the PSP.
They've already established an existing fanbase for the PSP.
And if they did it for NGP means that they're going to have to actually put effort into it (or be accused of being lazy if they didn't).

I actually like the 2D sprites since it feels more like the FFIV I grew up with.

That is a nice clock. I would want it, but unfortunately since I'm going to become a math teacher I am destined to get this novelty clock before anything else:

If you want good fanart, go to danbooru

It's NSFW, but amidst it there's a lot more actual good artwork.

I won't give the link for that one as I'm pretty sure that even if it's a non-direct link, the fact that there's porn amongst it would get me in some deeeeep trouble.

You can also try safebooru. It's the same thing except the artwork is safe for work as the name implies. I offered the Danbooru one also because sometimes good art gets posted there over safebooru. Anyway.

http://www.safebooru.org/

Enjoy! For spaces between, in titles such as Final Fantasy if you're going to look it up, type it in the search engine as final_fantasy

or cecil_harvey, and so on and so forth.

Thanks for the link. A lot of it is erotica but there is some pretty good stuff on there like this:

EDIT: Also! Details for Dissida 2 demo.

The demo will be released onto PSN March 15th, but for three bucks.

Yes, you read that right, Square is charging you for a demo. :glare:

Apparently the demo will include some carry-over content into the full game. It will include a unique scenario acts as a prequel to Dissida 2 in which you play as Lightning. Apparently said prologue will have exclusive items to be transferred into the full game and you will unlock Aeris as an assist character.

Yeah, sounds less like a demo and more like DLC they want to get out early.

I so want that clock :). And the pre-DLC would be nice, if I had a PSP I'd get it xD.

I'm also progressing quite well in FF7. Still mad about losing Aerith though, really sucks :(.

Aerith dieing isn't even a spoiler unless you've been locked up and away from the internet you're whole life.

Yeah, keep going through the game, if you ever get stuck on anything hit up my wall or post in this thread.

I think he was just frustrated about losing Aerith because she was such a good healer.

Also, this is related to our Advent Children discussion.

FFV requires a lot more grinding than most other games in the series and the story is more or less a rehash of FFI's plot, but the job system is fantastic, the music includes some of the best tracks on the series, and it's a good game overall. If you like challenge and don't mind dealing with a somewhat predictable story, FFV is a good game.

How is FFV compared to the other FF games? I never did heard to much about it tbh(is playing FFV for the first time).
The job system is fantastic and gives a ridiculous amount of character customization, the battles are fun and the dungeons are well designed. However, you will have to do a lot of grinding not only to get the class skills you want but just to be able to progress through the game. It has enjoyable characters but the story itself is a very archaic old-school JRPG story and isn't anything special.

It's a great game if you're willing to put up with a lot of grinding, but I personally consider it to be the weakest out of the SNES cycle. It is certainly worth a play through if you like JPRGs, though.

Also, get the GBA version. Best translation available.
