I will say that Iizuka (head of Sonic team) favorite character is Shadow, but yeah, to be honest I don't see why People think any of the main 4 won't ever be possible as a 2nd rep

They all have their merits to Join.

another fun question to hopefully stir up some new names: what is the absolute most obscure, least known character you can think of that you want in Smash?
Can I take some of your replies on page 702 for my poll? I'm looking for obscure but loved characters.

Slightly random topic incoming: what stages would you expect to see for your MWs?

I was listening to some Klonoa remixes and... kinda realized choosing a single location to represent that series isn't easy. I've experienced similar doubts about other franchises in the past, like KH, for instance.
1616648420533.png

Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
Destiny Islands
1616645938595.png

The Destiny Islands are the main starting point, and a key location, in almost every Kingdom Hearts title, being the home of Sora, Kairi, & Riku, and visited by essentially every other protagonist in the series a few separate times. It could be a transforming stage where it transitions from the usual form to the destroyed form from the battle with Darkside, to the version from the 2nd phase of the Ansem (Xehanort's Heartless) battle and then reforms to the original form in a way similar to the ending of the first Kingdom Hearts.

Dive to the Heart Station
1616646205467.png

The Dive to the Heart Stations appear frequently in Kingdom Hearts games, typically as the tutorial level, though it had a more substantial storyline appearance in Kingdom Hearts III as well as Birth by Sleep. For a stage in Super Smash Bros, it could be based upon the one from Kingdom Hearts III's tutorial where many scenes from the series played on 'screens' in the background.

1616648471663.png

2B (NieR Automata)
City Ruins
1616645556740.png

The City Ruins is not only the main area of NieR Automata, but its visually striking and very much known to those that played the game. It could possibly transition between its main form, to a form with a massive crater in the center, to having the White Tower rise from the center. Machine Lifeforms and Wildlife could roam around the background, and possibly have 9S or A2 fight the Machine Lifeforms, or just appear in the background, akin to characters in other stages like Green Hill Zone, Umbra Clock Tower, and King of Fighters Arena.

1616648539862.png

Saber / Artoria Pendragon (Fate/series)
Ryuudou Temple
1616646779643.png

The Ryuudou Temple is an important location that appears frequently in the Fate/series, but especially Saber's origin game, and the first game in the series, Fate/stay night. It could have a few different elements, such as other Servants or characters appearing, or even having a stage boss in the form of Gilgamesh. Night time would be the best option for the stage.

Fuyuki City
1616647101204.png

The city of Fuyuki could also be the stage for Saber, appearing prominently in many games, but especially Fate/stay night, Fate/Zero, and Fate/Grand Order, though ruined in the last one. With the Bridge in particularly being distinct, it could serve well as the main feature of the stage, night time being the best option for the time of day for the stage.

1616648713571.png

Aigis (Persona 3)
Tartarus
1616647346834.png

The biggest and most iconic landmark of Persona 3 is the towering structure that was once the Gekkoukan High School, Tartarus. Its unique & striking design is definitely defining of the game and could make for a unique stage. It could transition between floors and the rooftop. Of course, party members from Persona 3 & Metis could appear in the background.

Abyss of Time
1616647650621.png

The main dungeon of the follow up game, Persona 3 FES -The Answer-, and Aigis' turn at being the main character of the game, the Abyss of Time has a unique design that could be fun to play with to develop a stage, possibly even transitioning through locations within it. Of course, party members from Persona 3 & Metis could appear in the background.

1616648798746.png

Velvet Crowe (Tales of Berseria)
Titania
1616648167435.png

Titania is a major area from Tales of Berseria, a Prison Island for Daemons and Criminals alike used by the Abbey. It has many different levels and many characters from Tales of Berseria could appear in the background of the stage.

Assuming Bandana Waddle Dee was to be the next Kirby character, I'd think the most logical games to take stages from would be either

1. The most recent mainline Kirby game
2. Kirby Return to Dreamland (The first game that made BWD playable and gave him that "4th party member status")

For the first one, well, if we assume BWD would be added because of a new game we don't know about, then we obviously wouldn't know what stage we could get from it either. The most recent mainline game we got now is Star Allies, and with that game, the alter you fight the squidward-looking mother****er at could make for a good stage, or the ship where you fight the 3 sisters (I haven't played Star Allies in a while if me forgetting names didn't make that obvious...).

For the second possibility, Return to Dreamland. The Lor Cutter could maybe be the stage and work as a traveling stage, traveling to spots within KRtD or maybe even other locales within the Kirby series (It is supposed to be dimensional I think so...)
I think if we do a star allies stage might end up being hyper zone as it was teased up a lot in star allies, the lor starcutter could also work, as well as the access ark since that's still pretty recent, if BD got in i think he would come with content from Return to Dreamland, Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot and Star Allies.

Honestly it's hard not to see the disparity between how Sakurai-era Kirby and post-Sakurai Kirby are represented.

Characters: All three Kirby characters debuted in games Sakurai created. This is the least egregious category, though, because if you had three Kirby characters of course it would be this trio. Of note, Kirby and Dedede pull their Final Smashes from post-Sakurai games.

Stages: Every Kirby stage is based on a Sakurai-era game. Dreamland, Fountain of Dreams, Green Greens, Dreamland GB, Great Cave Offensive, Halberd...

Of note, Epic Yarn was apparently in the plans to get a stage in 4, but lo and behold, as soon as a Yoshi game that hadn't been released yet was revealed with a similar aesthetic, Epic Yarn was mysteriously scrapped in favor of it...wonder why.

Music: Only a small handful of songs from the modern era are present...and none are remixes. Every Kirby remix comes from a game Sakurai made. Air Ride has multiple remixes, and all post-Sakurai Kirby games combined have zero.

Assist Trophies: Knuckle Joe, Nightmare, Chef Kawasaki. All from the Sakurai era, with fan favorites like Susie, Magolor, and Galacta Knight being no-shows.

Spirits and World of Light: Marx is a boss. Gourmet Race got its own sub-area. Bandana Dee doesn't even get a spirit battle due to being an upgrade for normal Waddle Dee.

To me it's pretty telling that most of the already-scarce content from modern Kirby comes from direct music rips and reused Spirit artwork, all of which were pre-existing resources. Meanwhile almost every bit of original content in Smash pulls exclusively from Sakurai-era Kirby games, with the only two things that aren't from those games being the Ultra Sword and Masked Dedede.
I think Squeak Squad was the only one to get a remix. That was back in Brawl though.

EDIT: Can these two be merged?

So Hayabusa's chances are reasonably slimmer now? R.I.P the homie I guess. At this point I might as well hope the last two characters at least appeal to me.

X for Smash plz
We can only hope.

Speaking of, I'd imagine most likely Central Highway, Sky Lagoon or New-Type Airport. There's a slim chance they'd pick something like Jakob or Noah's Park for Mega Man X. Same for Zero unless its his GBA version.

MM.EXE could have a Cyperspace stage or a stage based off of the fighting arenas in Battle Network.

For Jin Kazama his Tekken 3 stage, or the Tekken 4 Octogon could work. Dragon's Nest is a returning Tekken stage, but I wouldn't associate with him right off the bat.

Hayabusa, I would think the Ninja Village, or 1-1, or 4-2 as his stage. Maybe a tower.

Then there's stuff like Croft Manor and Jazzy NYC, but I don't think Chun-Li would bring that stage instead of Ken.

Here goes nothing...
  • Asuka: Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy
  • Crash: The Time Twister
  • Spyro: High Caves
  • Shantae: Scuttle Town
  • Waddle Dee: Another Dimension
As for some not in my signature...
  • Heavy: Upward
  • Prince of All Cosmos: Space Mushroom
  • Waluigi: Waluigi Pinball
  • Dr. Eggman: Egg Fleet
  • Ratchet & Clank: Metropolis
Those would all work, I guess...

Zegram Ghart from Rogue Galaxy is one of my favorite video game characters ever. He has a badass design and is voiced by one of my favorite voice actors ever (Steve Blum). Unfortunately, he has basically no chance to make it in seeing as Rogue Galaxy was PlayStation exclusive and he wasn’t even the main character.

I just want to bring attention to the fact that Dragonite has an unused model in Super Smash Bros Ultimate which was supposed to be used as a Pokeball summon. Also to note is that this model is entirely different to the one used in the Kalos Pokemon League stage.

If the rest of this DLC is using what got left out, I could see Dragonite as a Fighter and I for one would actually be okay with this.

I never cared for Dragonite. I loved Dratini and Dragonsir but I couldn’t help but feel hugely disappointed in what they evolved into. No offense to anyone that actually likes it, that’s just my personal opinion.

I'd be dissapointed with Dragonite. I like it as a Pokemon, but it'd just be a dragon. We already have a dragon-esque Pokemon.

How would we feel about Chell in Smash?

Portal is my favorite Valve franchise of all time so I would LOVE to have her on the roster, and she'd bring a very unique gimmick with her portals.
She'd be cool but if a Valve rep is happening I expect Gordon Freeman because Half-Life changed FPS games (and arguably video games as a whole) forever. Plus Valve actually care about Half-Life now that Alyx has released. I don't think Valve care about Portal.

I always felt if Crash were to get a stage. Wumpa Islands would be more interesting being a traveling stage, among the areas it goes to is N. Sanity Beach which it'd start off with.

I like Dragonite, but I definitely understand the misgivings about him. I mean, Dratini and Dragonair were more serpentine, then it evolves into a flying Barney the Dinosaur.

He was my first powerhouse in Pokemon, though, so I could never hate the big guy. Though I gotta say with all the Gen 1 reps we have, I really would not want him as a fighter. If they wanted to do something different, maybe they could add a Pokemon Fighter that came with new Pokeball Pokemon (Dragonite and a few from Sword & Shield) instead of a stage.

Hey, I wouldn't mind Chell personally. Could be really interesting not just due to the Portal gimmick, but also how to build around that.

My only issue with her - as I've wondered quietly about when I've seen Chell movesets - is the risk of people camping near a Portal, waiting to toss the opponent through it. If two Portals are placed at say a Battlefield platform's underside and underneath the ledge, then it'd be possible to secure way-earlier-than-intended kills by Up Smashing / Throwing / whatever into the Portal and then interrupt the opponent's double jump / Up B with the off stage edge guard. Characters with long recoveries like :ultpikachu: could especially exploit that.

It's not an unfixable issue by any means - one possible solution is to have Portals reduce knockback or knockback growth if one's hit through it so one can act out of it earlier - but it's worth discussing.

Don't know about you but always felt if anything his stage would be the Megaton Punch Championship.
do we really need another Superstar stage?
Don't give Sakurai ideas. You know he wants to.

I still do wonder how are they going to do a Sonic characters challenger pack (either Tails or Eggman). Fighter pass 2 had a lot of franchise who already have some content, but none of them was on the level of Sonic. Arms had no stages and no music and a lot of characters with no spirits, FF7 had only 2 music and no spirits besides Cloud and Xenoblade 2 had only 3 music with no stage and not a lot of spirits. Of course, Sonic has a lot of stage possibility, with many games being not represented in this category. But music and spirits feels relatively complete, of course we could have more, but I wonder if Nintendo and Sakurai will really feel like Sonic really need more. I agree that Tails is a probably a possibility that is being slept on quite a bit, but I have a feeling that they're going to put already represented franchises only if there's a big lack of content, which Sonic doesn't really have.

Besides, I personally still think Puyo puyo have pretty big chances. It's probably not going to be the huge e3 announcement, but let's assume that the e3 announcement is a more western character, maybe the final fighter could please more to Japan, which Puyo puyo would fit.
Characters don’t get chosen based on how easy it is to fill up spirits, stages and music. It is the other way round with characters getting chosen first, then the rest of the content is decided. Sephiroth would have been in regardless of how much content FF had in the base game just because he’s Sephiroth, especially as FF is still underrepresented for its scope and size in terms of titles and cumulative sales, as only FF7 got love. Nintendo wouldn’t have rejected a character based off these arbitrary and irrelevant reasonings in the pursuit of profits.

Nintendo aren’t fans who care about “representation”. They ultimately only care about profits. If they hypothetically felt someone like Dixie would make them a lot of money as DLC, they are going to put her in regardless of how “well represented” Donkey Kong is or not.

Master Chief - Halo, especially Installation 04. But 05 and 07 (Zeta Halo which Halo Infinite will take place) can work

Agumon - File Island

Ezio Auditore - Rome, Venice

Lara Croft - Croft Mansion or other tombs.

Sephiroth was a case of everything coming together. Square wanted to push the VII Remake, Nintendo saw profit with his inclusion, Sakurai liked him, and it was a chance to address the lackluster FF7 content in Smash.

What would be a good stage for Arle...? 🤔
Personally, I'd go with Primp Town, even if it's technically from the Fever games. It is a recurring location, and I'd argue it's one of the most well-known.

Not sure if there's any recurring locations from the Monogatari era or the first few Puyo games.

Other Final Fantasy games who didn't get representation:

Representing something like Kirby with Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure and Super Star leaving out modern representation is like only having Final Fantasy 7 and not the other games.

Like at the very LEAST I wanted with Sephiroth’s pack music from other FF games if not S-E games as a whole

the latter would be in Neku’s pack... please let a Neku pack happen 🥺

I’m kind of split on this. On one hand, I would love more Final Fantasy content from different games. Final Fantasy IX and X are my two favorite games in the series with IX possibly being my favorite game of all time. On the other, Sephiroth and Vincent Valentine are my favorite characters in the series with Sephiroth being one of my favorite characters in all of video games so I’m really glad we got him.

Oh come on now, we all know the Pokemon rep is usually(but not always; Pichu(although Pikachu was one at some point as we saw in a Flashback), Jigglypuff(although it followed him around at one point), Ivysaur(although Bulbasaur could still evolve despite stating it didn't want to) and Mewtwo) someone Ash has in his team.

Pikachu, Squirtle, Charizard, Greninja, Incineroar. For this model to mean a fighter, Dragonite would have to be on Ash's tea-

I think the best solution to this specific setup would be to just not give Chell a dunk. Since she's the one who has to set up the portals like that (she who probably wouldn't have a good enough recovery for it to be worth going out of her way to set up), she wouldn't really cause the scenario if she couldn't take advantage of it, and if her opponent could, then she could just move a portal.

My idea of allowing you to place portals on the underside of semi-solid platforms might cause the issue on tri-plats anyway, but since she'd likely be a setup character with mediocre normals, it would probably be better for her to be more proactive, even when trying to go for the setup by moving the entrance portal around.

...Actually I think the most broken thing about this would be "lol I shot a portal at your feet and now you' have to recover".

I think Sword and Shield might be old enough at this point that if we get another Pokémon rep, it wouldn’t necessarily be from that game.

My top favorites from each generation are:

Gengar
Houndoom
Seviper
Gliscor
Cofagrigus
Clawitzer
Golisopod
Orbeetle

If we got any of those, I would be really hyped but none of them have much a chance except for Gengar.

I mean, it's not any older than other Switch games that got a character in this pass. Remember how people were saying that XC2 was irrelevant because of the XCDE and rumors of a XCX port? We all know how that turned out.:ultpyra:

For Monster Hunter - Shrine Ruins
EiNnFOcX0AAGFBk.jpg
The new first area for Monster Hunter Rise, this stage could act like Garreg Mach Monastary, where the stage shifts between areas, perhaps from the grassy open area when you first enter the map, to the bamboo forest path, then to the waterfall, and finally the shrine ruins. Monsters can also make an appearance in the background, like Rathian in the plains, Great Izuchi on the path, Mizutsune by the waterfall, and Magnamalo by the ruins.

For Amaterasu - Shinshu Field
c98dd9e296ad2dddb59badd5798fbf9e.jpg
This wide open area would be nice to showcase the beauty of the world of Okami, it could also feature several of the supporting characters walking the paths and show the sakura tree blooming in the background.

For Reimu - Gensokyo

For showing off the world of Touhou, simply using the Hakurei Shrine wouldn't do the series justice, so it'd be best to show off the entire world of Gensokyo from a floating platform, much like Yggdrasil's Alter. The fighters could start at the Hakurei Shrine, then have a floating platform take them across the lake to get a view of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, then above the Bamboo Forest of the Lost to catch a glimpse of Eintei, next they could fly above Yokai Mountain to spot the Moriya Shrine, then finally take a portal into the Netherworld to see Hakugyokurou.
