I mean, it's not any older than other Switch games that got a character in this pass. Remember how people were saying that XC2 was irrelevant because of the XCDE and rumors of a XCX port? We all know how that turned out.:ultpyra:
That’s true. I’m not saying it won’t be from SwSh, just that I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to go with another generation. If we do get a current Gen Pokémon, I’m personally hoping for Orbeetle, Toxtricity, or Corviknight (although I’m not sure how that one would play in Smash).

I think Sword and Shield might be old enough at this point that if we get another Pokémon rep, it wouldn’t necessarily be from that game.

My top favorites from each generation are:

Gengar
Houndoom
Seviper
Gliscor
Cofagrigus
Clawitzer
Golisopod
Orbeetle

If we got any of those, I would be really hyped but none of them have much a chance except for Gengar.
Really?! No Pidove. Very under-rated pokemon.

Slightly random topic incoming: what stages would you expect to see for your MWs?

I was listening to some Klonoa remixes and... kinda realized choosing a single location to represent that series isn't easy. I've experienced similar doubts about other franchises in the past, like KH, for instance.
As for Waluigi, I see most people expect/suggest Waluigi Pinball, but I don't think any content that comes with him would all have to be directly related to his character. There are still several barely or unrepresented Mario spin-off titles to pull a stage and music from. You could do a Mario Party board, a tennis court, a golf course, a baseball court, maybe even a dance floor...

Similarly, with music, for example, Waluigi's theme from Mario Strikers should be included, but so should e.g. Wario and Bowser's. I'd like this one as well:

Tails, personally. Laying it out, a new Sonic character is something that makes an increasing amount of sense to me.

- I'm personally anticipating another SEGA character since it is the only company other than SNK with nothing this pass, and how DLC thus far has been companies that were already involved with DLC previously. Pattern susceptible to be broken, but I believe this has a good chance of playing out.

- I've been contemplating which other series could be expanded on, seeing how 3/4 of our DLC characters are from IPs that already had some form of content in Smash (and then half of them were from series that already had characters). With the previous point in mind I began to think about Sonic. Out of SEGA's options, I believe more Sonic makes the most sense - as much as I want Arle to be in, Tails (or Eggman) would just please more people. See below.

- Steve and Sephiroth are mass appeal third parties who would please both the "hardcore" fans and the casuals. The hardcore fans likely will have bought DLC anyway, so I believe the deals this time around are generally bigger more widely popular characters to a general audience. Another Sonic character fits this bill pretty nicely, and has been requested for a particularly long time. I imagine Tails, Knuckles and Shadow all have a pretty solid ballot presence.

- If we were gonna get a Sonic character, E3 would be a good time for it. Sonic is notably more popular in the west, and Sonic's 30th Anniversary lands sometime this May. So it would be both fitting and timely.

And then I opt for Tails over Eggman because I'm just having a difficult time imagining them picking Eggman. When there's a clear Player 2, they usually opt for them over the villain. Tails is a Mii Costume, but since it was released all the way back in April 2019 it remains in a bit of a grey area. Since Rex was part of the original Pyra project plan, which was likely being worked out sometime that year, I think Tails is similarly fair game.

I think Tails is perfectly right outside the realm of expectation while also making enough sense in retrospect. I think people are quick to count him out for the aforementioned reason, and with the influx in Eggman support he's gotten a bit left by the wayside. I tend not to back characters just because they "break fan rules" or are gonna blindside people but I'm just trying to get a hard read on what can happen next before it happens. Most characters we've gotten so far were ignored or counted out for one assumption or another. It's productive to try stretch outside the box a little bit.
On top of this, you could say that they chose Sephiroth because they want the biggest game villain not in yet. Sidekicks are a similarly big role in gaming & Tails is the biggest sidekick not in yet. Hell, he’s the biggest one overall besides Luigi & Yoshi.

Believe it or not but Pidgey was my first ever favorite Pokémon. Pidove isn’t bad either but if we ever got a basic starter bird, it has to be Pidgey.
**** you. Pidove played a major role in the Detective Pikachu video game! Clearly one of Nintendos best games. Not only that, he is the best pokemon ever. Just is.

There was a problem fetching the tweet
Who would you pick?

I’d go with B. I wanna pick A for Crash, but…it’s also got Jonesy.
Damn you really hate Jonesy that much huh? I have to go with whatever has Crash. I seriously don't care who gets into the game after him. Fortnite really doesn't bother me, but personally I think it's much too soon for them to make it into the gaming hall of fame that is Smash.

I think it’s basically impossible to predict who will actually get in. There are so many potential characters and Sakurai has been known to surprise us. Here are a few characters I want a lot that I feel have a legitimate chance:

Battletoads
Illidan Stormrage
Lu Bu
Velvet Crowe
Gengar

None of these characters are regularly talked about and probably aren’t the most likely but I feel that there is at least a possibility of one of these actually happening. I don’t think many of my other most wanted characters have much a chance at all unfortunately.
I wouldn't say it's basically impossible. We can form a really reasonable idea of what they'll do based on precedent. Of course, we won't get it right every time, but we can pretty easily determine what the reasoning behind adding past characters was.

With first party DLC, Nintendo leans HEAVILY towards promoting recent games. With 3rd party in general Nintendo almost exclusively has added characters from franchises with very high sale numbers and/or that are well established/classic. Literally the only exception to this has been Bayonetta, and she's practically a Nintendo character.

Regardless, I do hope you get one of your most wanted characters. Gengar in particular is one of my favorite Pokemon of all time, and I'd love to see them get in. When I was a kid my imaginary team I made for myself was Raichu, Ditto, Marowak, Alakazam, Gengar, and Dragonite. :)

Yea, it's hard for me to ignore the Mii costume and how scummy it would be to release Tails after that. I probably wouldn't complain for too long because I prefer Tails over Eggman, but I still feel like they would avoid that just because of how it looks. I hope I'm wrong because Tails is such an endearing and awesome character to me. I've been playing Sonic games since they came out on the Genesis.

Hate to break it to you, but the best uninvolved regional bird is actually Taillow.

If we're looking at all of the evolutions though then Fletchinder for the win.

Thanks, that means a lot 😊. I already got the character I voted for on the Smash ballot (K. Rool) and Sephiroth is one of my favorite characters ever so I won’t be that upset if we get characters I don’t really care about. I can’t get too greedy.

you all are sleeping on Starly, clearly the best regional bird line
I do really like Staraptor, but I like Fletchinder a little more. Even used it on my playthrough of Pokémon X, which...I think was the last playthrough where I exclusively used Pokémon I really like the designs of (meaning I didn't evolve the Pokémon if I didn't like the evolution more).

So we got a trailer for that Touhou AoCF Switch/PS4 port...
But it's in English. No official localization announcement of ESRB rating, but it's still quite curious. Thought I'd bring it up.

Please don't let this spawn ANOTHER repetitive Reimu debate...
DEBATE TIME!!!!!!!! It got an English Translation, so I think it's possible for it to be released by ZUN internationally, but with Japanese set as the Default. Still though, Grazing man, Grazing.

Huh, so wait, the game itself isn't translated but the trailer is in english?

That is... weird. I guess they will probably need a proper translation because it would be harder to download any patch like you can do on PC, but still.

Since you're the resident Touhou nut: why is the series' localization status like this if the western fanbase seems decently big?

I think it’s just a general English trailer, not region specific. For EU, they’d need to include a PEGI rating.

I think they may include this in the next Indie World and reveal the respective ESRB (NA) and PEGI (EU) ratings for each region’s broadcast

Here are a few that I would do for a few of my most wanteds, realistic or not.

Neku: Scramble Crossing

Crash: N Sanity Beach

Spyro: Magic Crafters

Heavy: 2Fort

Eggman: Metallic Madness

Here goes with mine:

Waluigi: Waluigi Pinball, though Bowser's Castle would probably be the Actual Stage lol.

Dixie Kong: Bramble Blast there's no competition this HAS to be Dixie's Stage, and this is my Most Wanted Stage as well lol.

Ruby Heart: I think the Clock Tower could be Nice. Legal Stage with a Nice View? Fits perfectly!

Kris Deltarune: Depends on approach to the Challenger Pack. If it's just Deltarune, then the Card Castle would be perfect. If it's both Undertale and Deltarune, then probably the Battle System with Locations in the Background from both games. Maybe with Hazards On the Music could dictate the Hazads?

For my three most wanted characters:

Shantae: Scuttle Town. Maybe have Risky's ship in the background attacking fighters occasionally.

Heavy: 2Fort or Gravel Pit.

Otto Matic: Planet Rennie. It's a amusement park of doom with Balloons, Clowns, and Bumper Cars.

Touhou's weird in that it relies on fanworks, not official games; Osmosis, not raw sales. If we judged it by the official games alone, Reimu would've never gotten off the ground the way she did. She'd just be brushed off. But Touhou isn't the official games alone, it's also the fangames, the doujin manga, the remixes.

Think of it this way. Most games are plants, and the largest grow into towering trees. Touhou, on the other hand, is a fungus. At first glance it's just a little mushroom, but when you factor in all the different fanworks, you realize there's a massive fungal colony underneath the surface. The real problem comes from hard they are to compare, because A: The fungus is largely underground and out of sight, and B: It grows across the ground, while the trees reach for the skies. There isn't a real conversion formula here, so everyone has their own different opinions on how much the fandom matters.

Basically, being a Touhou fan doesn't necessarily mean playing the games. Even the hardcore fans that now how to use patchers are sometimes afraid of all the bullets. Still, you can appreciate the characters, the fan animations, the music remixes, etc. As a result, the mainline games aren't strictly necessary, and either way if you actually know where all the characters come from you probably know how to work a patcher too. Besides, ZUN is well aware that fan translations will come out only a couple days after release anyways, so he just lets them happen.

That, and ZUN drinks gallons of beer a day and casually decides that his OCs can eat history. He's just on a different wavelength.

On the subject of favorite Pokémon, I built a team of my favorite designs from each generation, and did so until Gen 6. The full team was:
  1. Growlithe
  2. Houndour
  3. Poochyena
  4. Lucario
  5. Herdier
  6. Pyroar (Male)
My priorities shifted since then, and I haven't really picked a favorite for the previous two generations, but it would probably be something along the lines of:

Gen 7: Decidueye, Incineroar, or one of ones from the entire Rockruff line
Gen 8: Greedent, Toxtricity, Falinks, Snom, or Corviknight

As far as Super Smash Bros. goes, I do actually have one (potentially two) of my favorites in the game, but the others will probably never get in. I'm OK with that though.

As far as Pokémon with even a ghost of a chance, I'd be pretty amped for Toxtricity ( :awesome: ), and Corviknight would be really cool too.

I never cared for Dragonite. I loved Dratini and Dragonsir but I couldn’t help but feel hugely disappointed in what they evolved into. No offense to anyone that actually likes it, that’s just my personal opinion.
It's probably the doofiest of the pseudo-legendaries. He's basically just Barney with wings.

I've always fancied myself a Dark-type trainer, so my full team is:
Honchkrow
Greninja
Incineroar
Krookodile
Weavile
Shiftry - basically a placeholder. I'm waiting for a Grass/Dark starter, OR an Electric/Dark Pokemon that's actually cool(why couldn't Luxray been Electric/Dark dammit!) to really finish off the team.

Here's an interesting discussion regarding Pokemon.

If Smash were to each get a Pokemon Trainer from every region. What would their three Pokemon be and why?

I dislike the thought of a new trainer in general, but I'm just going to go with the safe answer of 3 stages of the 3 starters for each region. Anything else would feel clunky and poorly conceived to me.

lol he just randomly decides that characters don't exist anymore.

...

Wait...

Oh no...

You were on a roll with all dogs until Pyroar lol.
This amuses me as well, especially with Pyroar being a cat. Furfrou and Slurpuff didn't really appeal to me though, and neither did Swirlix until I found out it was also a like dog with those little feet (even so, it has to be drawn or posed in just the right way for me to find it cute).

I also don't like the regional canines from Galar; there's just something about them that looks off to me.

Here's an interesting discussion regarding Pokemon.

The most likely and most boring answer is each region's starters, prioritizing the most popular one in the evo chain, so probably something like this:
  • Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard
  • Totodile, Bayleaf, Typhlosion
  • Mudkip, Grovyle, Blaziken
  • Piplup, Grottle, Infernape
  • Snivy, Dewott, Emboar
  • Chespin, Braixen, Greninja
  • Litten, Brionne, Decidueye
  • Sobble, Thwackey, Cinderace
Personally, I think future player characters should just be skins for the Pokémon Trainer. Other trainer classes might could have their own teams or simply use their star Pokémon, but otherwise, I wouldn't add more trainers like the one we've got.

Since Smash Puppy already gave the most likely answers, I’ll go with my personal favorites:

Gen 1B: Gengar, Electabuzz, Kabutops
Gen 2: Houndoom, Gligar, and Sneasel
Gen 3; Seviper, Zangoose, and Deoxys
Gen 4: Gliscor, Toxicroak, Garchomp
Gen 5: Cofagrigus, Zoroark, Kyurem
Gen 6: Clawitzer, Dragalgae, Malamar
Gen 7: Golisopod, Lycanroc, Guzzlord
Gen 8: Orbeetle, Toxtricity, Corviknight

I doubt these would actually be chosen but that’s what I would personally love.

More work than I want to spend on a hypothetical that would infuriate me.
You could just do what I did and choose your three favorites from each generation. I think it’s more intersting that way. Otherwise everyone’s answers would be mostly the same, just variations on starter lineups.

Hmmm, I always thought they'd be more variety honestly like each of the types would have different variant evolutions.

  • Actually good comparison between plants, fungi and the Touhou fanbase
  • Casually discussing eating history
...You know what, you've convinced me, I'll give the series an actual shot when I have a chance. Any useful links to share? I don't think it's available on Steam.

Several official bullet hell games are on Steam, just that they’re all in Japanese and you’d need to find an English patch

Hmmm, I always thought they'd be more variety honestly like each of the types would have different variant evolutions.
Yeah, I wasn't trying to repeat Water->Grass->Fire a bunch, it just kind of came out that way.
  • Gen 1 is already done like that.
  • I believe Totodile and Bayleaf are the most popular of their evolutionary lines, so that just left Typhlosion.
  • Blaziken is the most popular of the Gen 3 starters and Mudkip is the most popular of its line, while Grovyle is also quite popular among Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fans.
  • Infernape is the most popular of the Gen 4 starters, and Piplup is more popular than Prinplup, though you might switch the Water and Grass starters if Grottle is unworkable.
  • Snivy is probably the most popular of the Gen 5 starters (which changes it up somewhat), and Samurott's use of its Seamitars would be difficult to implement, so I think Dewott and Emboar are more likely than Pignite and Samurott.
  • Thwackey is the only starter here that people actively dislike, but Cinderace seems to be the most popular of the Galar starters, and Sobble seems to be the most popular unevolved starter on top of being more popular than Drizzile. (this one might be the most inaccurate, as I know the least about these)
So in the end, Gen 6 and 7 are really the only ones to break the mold. Though I'm sure at least some of these trios might go differently than I suggest here in the interest of synergy.

Here's an interesting discussion regarding Pokemon.

If Smash were to each get a Pokemon Trainer from every region. What would their three Pokemon be and why?
instead of doing the boring option, I'm going to choose a specific trainer from every region

Johto: Silver - Chikorita, Quilava, Feraligatr (yeah this one is still the starters but I wanted a rival character)
Hoenn: Wally - Gardevoir, Delcatty and Altaria
Sinnoh: Cynthia - Garchomp, Milotic and Rosarade
Unova: N - Zoroark, Darmanitan, Timburr
Kalos: Clemont - Heliolisk, Dedenne, and Bunnelby
Alola: Kukui - Lycanroc, Decidueye and Alolan Ninetales
Galar: Bea - Machamp, Sirfetch'd and Grapploct

I mean we can’t have a character in Smash whose current legacy is being held up by fan games and is really maintaining its momentum more largely with media, community projects, and art than actual games.

That’s what we have Sonic for. 😉
