At first, I thought the Pyra trailer was a Skyward Sword HD reveal. When Rex showed up, I was pretty sure it was a Xenoblade 2 sequel, but I thought it could be Smash. Then Rex showed up at FD and it was obvious, but not really because I would've never thought we'd get solo Pyra or Mythra without Rex.

The only thing more surprising was how...unique Rex's VA was. It was the first time I heard it, and it wasn't what I was expecting.

tbh "anime" is a hard aesthetic to pin down exactly. You put Inklings in cartoony but there's a Splatoon manga, not to mention there's a literal Pokemon anime so wouldn't the Pokemon "technically" be anime?

I've seen several videos about "what anime is" and it's really hard to quantify. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is an anime but its style is totally different from something like Dragon Ball. The people who complain about anime characters probably won't accept anything other than photorealistic characters and games with characters they grew up with.

I was watching the Direct through my younger brother's reaction livestream and I literally said 'He's gonna find her in Smash' the whole time lol He knew I was happy to see Pyra over Rex too, even said 'Luna, I bet you're having a field day' lol
He was correct. Pyra was literally my most wanted Nintendo character and 2nd most wanted overall behind Sora..but I thought she'd come with Rex as the primary player character, so I placed them lower on my list initially.

Y'know despite the name, I do think Toon Link is more anime than cartoon.

I almost placed all of the Pokémon in the Anime category, but their style could also be seen as cartoony, as for Inkling, they're a mixture of cartoon and anime in aesthetic..though the manga wouldn't matter in this case since Frozen 2 even has a manga and a lot of Disney characters have appeared in the Kingdom Hearts manga releases.

But yes, most of the time people complain about 'anime' or 'sword characters', I feel its because its just not a character they like/wanted or because they feel someone else, who may not have even been picked in the characters place mind you, would have been better choices. A lot of people who rant about 'anime' characters are the same people clamouring for characters like Sora, Impa, Midna, Chun-Li, and other quite anime-esque characters but because they are fans of it they'll claim its an exception, 'deserves it', or that its not anime. I once had a debate with someone that said Link & Zelda, in their Twilight Princess forms, 'weren't anime' and looked like 'American cartoons'..which, I mean, come on..its just not true..

However, what we should all gather from this is that there is no distinction between 'cartoon' or 'anime'..its all just artstyles that aren't realistic...after all, such a distinction doesn't exist in Japan, all animation is called 'anime' there.

Y'know despite the name, I do think Toon Link is more anime than cartoon.

He was another one that was difficult to place since, well, artstyles are so diverse, even amongst 'anime', that overlap is bound to happen..just look at Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt..its simultaneously very American cartoony and very anime.

They announced a Samurai Shodown x Guilty Gear collaboration. Next DLC character for SamSho is a GG char. Probably Baiken, maybe Johnny, if we go the samurai route.

They also announced I-No, the last character for GG Strive's base roster. Returning villain of the series. Her trailer is so cool and her theme is absolutely bonkers. Sharing the trailer because it's so good lol

But now that Pyra and Mythra set the precedent for two characters in one Challenger Pack, I hope we can get Coco as and Echo of Crash.

An echo pass has been so talked about so much the top 5 choices you always see are:
Dixie Kong
Shadow
Ms Pac Man
Dry Bowser
Octolings
Thats not to say these wouldn’t be good choices or that others aren’t talked about. But damn these have probably been the 5 most long lasting names in the entirety if Ultimates life. Not most popular, but these guys have probably been speculated and talked about the longest.

Not sure I'd describe WFT as realistic. Also why is it the only character that has both gendered alts listed?

Also it seems if anything you're using body proportions to distinguish between cartoon and anime if you're listing stuff like Pikachu and Toon Link as cartoons. Out of everyone in the cast, pokemon are literally anime.

I absolutely DO NOT want Dixie nor Impa as Echo Fighters.
They are both unique enough to be regular fighters, and I will argue that making them Echos would be an insult.
Even if it's a Villager to Isabelle level of difference, Dixie and Impa deserve to be unique fighters.

I think you're in the minority here. It's never a choice between echo or full fighter, in most situations echoes are chosen simply because they're easyto make. My test for whether a character should be an Echo is to look at how they work in the home series.

Diddy and Dixie always had different movesets. Unique.
Donkey Kong and Funky Kong function roughly the same (except Funky has some unique handicaps). Echo.

Though Tails was a direct copy of Sonic in Sonic 2, he's been unique since Sonic 3 onward. Unique.
Shadow, to this day (in core Sonic games, not spin offs), uses Sonic's same moveset. From Adventure 2 to Forces, they are the definition of clones. Echo.

Because I was tired and accidentally clicked on them both.
I'm listing them more by 'art style' that is stereotypically considered 'cartoon' and 'anime'..and usually people tend to refer to only human-like characters as 'anime style'..

Personally, My thoughts on some of the Popular Echo Suggestions

-Dry Bowser and Mrs.PAC-MAN honestly work better as alts. Especially for Dry Bowser, as there's no Different Characteristics that separates Dry Bowser from Regular Bowser

-Octoling could work. I Imagine that with how Big Splatoon is, Octoling could be a Semi-Clone in that they specialize with Weapons from 2 and/or 3 (as Inkling is focused on Weapons from Splatoon 1)

-Ninten does have his unique abilities, but first he needs a redesign, but also Mother I would say might not have enough priorty for Ninten to get his Skills. I'm not sure

-Jeanne could Probably work, though to be honest with how Volatile Bayonetta's Moveset design is, I could see why they haven't gone for it

-Dixie Kong, Impa, and Shadow could theoretically work, but I actually imagine that they'd likely get in as their own characters over being echoes

I think when people consider Echo fighters, they only consider if the character has a similar body type and perhaps the ability to do the moves another character to do, and just assume they are Destined echo material, when there's more that goes on

Echo Fighters still have to go through the Merit checklist, and typically Most of the echo Fighters might lack in some area of the merit checklist that being an Echo Fighter is their only shot

Daisy, Lucina, Dark Pit, and Chrom I imagine didn't have enough distinguishing moveset ideas to be implemented as Full Fighters. In Chrom's case, this was specifically expressed by Sakurai officially, as he couldn't come up with a Concept that wasn't just mix of Marth and Ike.

Dark Samus is a very irrelevant character, and While Sakurai did say she was requested overseas, I can't imagine that it was big enough to reconsider, especially since Ridley heavily overshadowed her anyway.

Richter and Ken are special cases, as Richter and Simon share a Moveset, and Ken pretty much has his unique things in Ultimate anyways. coincidently, they happen to be 3rd Party

Dixie, Impa, and Shadow don't really have any Drawbacks in the merit department. These characters have been requested, are Relevant, and have More concrete moveset Ideas that can be implemented when you compare them to the Echo fighters. Dixie's Spirit as an example suggests that Sakurai still wants to Implement that Duo Mechanic from the lost archives of Brawl, as Dixie's Upgraded (4 Star) Spirit is her with Kiddy Kong

Toon link is based off those toei anime movies from the 60s. There's no real specific style to anime honestly.
