Here's a new game.

What were some characters in Smash 4 and Ultimate that you thought were obvious inclusions but seemed to take others by surprise?

For me, Little Mac, Miis and Steve all fit that bill.
Steve was on my prediction list for all of Vol.2 speculation. I was 99% sure he was going to be revealed on October 1st, and he was.

I really don't get why people were so suprised

Miis and Shulk for Smash 4. Byleth and Steve in Ultimate. I always believed another Microsoft rep after Banjo was possible for FP2 because of their current relationship with Nintendo.

It was cool when Joker got in then became so-so until Steve/Sephiroth came out then it became hype.

I think Steve was very obvious from the start. Terry was also kind of obvious too, to an extent.

I've been thinking about ways to theorize who the last 3 would be, and not counting Nintendo chars, the DLC chars so far consisted of those owned by Microsoft, Square, SEGA, and SNK. Since Microsoft and Square both got two reps in DLC, what are the chances of SEGA and SNK getting 2nd reps? And who should those reps be?
For Sega I'll sya that it's possible but most people definitively overrate their chance to get another character. For SNK it's like a 0.001% chance to get another and it's generous, Terry already represents them almost flawlessly.

SNK I don't think will get another Character, It seems most of the content associated with the whole company came with them, it was like a SNK Celebration when Terry came

I don't believe there is Metal Slug content, there may be music, but I haven't listened to all 50 songs Terry brought with him

As for Sega...

Ask Me, And I'll probably say 99.99%, with the Missing percent being because nothing is actually confirmed yet, but I personally think that a Certain someone in the Shadows will Rise again, perhaps as the next character if my analysis is correct

Ask anyone else and they'll give you a more grounded answer of "Maybe, Maybe not". The most "Realistic" options people will throw out would be Eggman, Tails, Arle, with Sakura as a dark horse. Kiryu seemingly isn't happening due to dev statements, and you could actually make the same argument for Arle, but that's a much harder sell and frankly I don't think her interview Killed her

Definitely satisfied. Steve wasn't a character I'd have take literally any character over, but I understand and respect why he made it in the first place.

I’m genuinely confused how Warcraft goes completely ignored in Smash speculation. Whenever I see anyone mention an Activision/Blizzard character, it is almost always Crash and occasionally Tracer. I think people are overlooking how huge and influential Warcraft is. The franchise revolutionized several different genres from RTS to MMORPG to digital TCG and even had a film in theaters. Without Warcraft, we never would have had the MOBA genre with huge games like League of Legends taking direct inspiration from Warcraft 3. There is a pretty active support thread for LoL but I never got a single reply in either my Warcraft or Starcraft support threads. I’m not really complaining, I am just confused why no one seems to care.

Warcraft has never even been on a Nintendo system so it's not hard to see why it doesn't have much mindshare amongst Nintendo/Smash fans.

We're probably just not the target audience for it. Though if a Warcraft character does get in, you can bet your bottom dollar that people will defend the inclusion fervently, almost as if people aren't allowed to dislike it while everyone's still jerking knees, just like with Sephiroth.

I Imagine it's because Warcraft is so PC Heavy, and really has no correlation with the Nintendo Audience

League is kind of the same, but there's upcoming games coming to Consoles, including Switch, as well as Tencent/Riot being buddy buddy with Nintendo.

I'll also be honest but While I know of Warcraft, I don't think the actual characters are as Eye-Popping has league is. I assume League is more based around the champions and Warcraft is more broad, like I think It's not a pre-defined character you play, but your own OC of that kind. League has defined Characters

Then again while I know of Warcraft I don't know too much about the specifics

Smash fans are mostly Nintendo fans, or at least console gaming fans. Warcraft is almost entirely PC, so it makes sense there's not a lot of overlap.

I believe that's only the case with World of Warcraft, and the RTS games have you control various leaders within the world like in Civilization.

EDIT: As for characters to pick, the two names I see thrown around are Thrall (who I assume is one of the the most popular characters in the Warcraft circle), and The Litch King, who seems to be the most iconic character, though that could just be my bias, as Wrath of the Litch King was the current expansion when World of Warcraft was on my radar.

On top of that it's barely ever touched even the other home consoles (according to Wikipedia the only consoles it got released on were the Saturn and the PS1, so yeah.....). It seems to be a mostly PC-based franchise (and mobile).

That is true but Starcraft and Diablo have and never get any attention either. To my knowledge, League of Legends has never been on a Nintendo console either but still manages to at least get some support. I’m not sure how important being on a Nintendo console even is anymore. Cloud, Sephiroth, Joker, and Snake are much more known for being PlayStation characters than Nintendo. I don’t know if the 3DS Persona games or Cloud’s cameo appearances in a few games really do much for them. That being said, I really like all those characters and I’m happy they’re in, I was just making a comparison.

I think 3 of my 5 most wanted with Ridley, Eight, and Byleth, so that alone makes me pretty happy. Other additions like Chrom, Simon, K. Rool, and Steve are also pretty neat.

All in all, I dig it. Probably my second favourite lineup of newcomers after Brawl, which was always going to be a tough act to beat with just how much of a step forward Brawl's roster was.

I’m really happy with Ultimate’s roster overall. I voted for K. Rool in the Smash Ballot and Sephiroth is one of my favorite game characters ever. Like anything else, it isn’t perfect but I can’t always expect everything to be catered to my personal tastes. No matter who we get at this point, I will be happy.

As for League of Legends, that is pretty cool. I've never really been into hardcore multiplayer only games like that but I really like the aesthetic of its characters. I would totally be down for trying a more single player or co-op game in its world. I would also be pretty happy to get a League of Legends character in Smash too.

For Warcraft, one of my most wanted characters overall is Ilidan Stormrage. He has a really awesome aesthetic that would totally stand out from the rest of the Smash cast and would offer a lot of variety in playstyle. He is one of the main antagonists so he is pretty important to the lore. Other great options are Arthas (Lich King), Thrall, Garrosh, and Sylvanas.

This is Ilidan for anybody that doesn't know anything about Warcraft.

Min Min was great, considering it was finally a character I had a good deal of familiarity with.

I was really happy with Steve, even more so cause I was able to watch it happen with my friends who were even more thrilled than I was.

Sephiroth wasn’t a character I was too keen on initially. He’s not bad by any means, and I’ve gotten some enjoyment out of him, but nothing over-the-top. I’d say for me, personally, he’s my least favorite of FP2 so far. But I also don’t think enough time has passed for me to make a proper conclusion on him.

Guess maybe I'll ask the better question.

Lots to like for me in this current batch of newcomers, including some unexpected surprises I ended up liking. A fair share of characters I ended up not liking too. Though for the most part it’s because I can’t play the character well, not that I don’t like the character’s inclusion. Overall I think the current batch, along with the return of literally every veteran, I’ve enjoyed it a lot. Honestly, I just want one of any of my most wanted, I would be absolutely overjoyed. But even if that doesn’t happen, I really don’t have any complaints with the newcomers or roster as a whole.

:ultinkling: - Pretty standard and expected pick considering how well Splatoon did for Nintendo. I'm not a fan of Splatoon so she's kind of an okay pick. Kind of fun to play as sometimes though. I have never touched the stage at all.
:ultdaisy::ultchrom::ultdarksamus: - I don't like Echo Fighters. They're just alternate costumes given a slot. Kind of annoying too since back in Melee and it's tight schedule, Sakurai was able to make 6 melee clones who had lots of differences
:ultridley: - I used to be on the "Ridley's too big" train and I kind of liked him as a boss. Ridley is kind of cool to play as.
:ultsimon::ultrichter: - Simon is a good pick and I like how Sakurai based him off from his NES incarnation. Really glad to see Richter though I'm disappointed he's an Echo fighter with little to no gameplay changes from Simon.
:ultkrool: - Really cool pick. I love Donkey Kong Country 1 to death and he's a lot of fun to play as.
:ultisabelle: - I don't like Isabelle at all. I don't like how she plays, I never play as her and if I wanted to play as someone like her I'd play as Villager.
:ultken: - The only Echo Fighter I like because he has differences that other Echo fighters should have had. I like to keep the Roster stacked so it's a shame that he has to be out of the way.
:ultincineroar: - I wanted Decidueye so seeing Incineroar join instead was really disappointing. He has a cool moveset but I just wish he didn't look like a buff guy in a mascot costume.
:ultpiranha: - The November presentation was going so well so why not spruce it up by making a throw away character? I was already so disappointed in that presentation that I didn't react much to the Piranha Plant's appearance.
:ultjoker: - When he was revealed, I had nothing but apathy for him. Decided to watch a playthrough of Persona 5 and I liked the look of the game. Just wish the game was on the PC or Nintendo Switch.
:ulthero2: - Never played Dragon Quest so the character did nothing for me, however the Dragon Quest 8 protagonist is cool and I like playing as him from time to time.
:ultbanjokazooie: - Finally a character I was extremely hyped for. I never grew up playing Banjo Kazooie but I loved playing the first game so I decided to support the duo because I thought they really belonged to this game. I've dedicated myself to maining them ever since they released.
:ult_terry: - He's a pretty cool character and I was happy with his inclusion. I was aware of the King of Fighters but not so much with Fatal Fury. I like playing as him sometimes and he has a fun moveset.
:ultbyleth: - As soon as Sakurai gave us the warning at the beginning, I instantly knew who it was going to be. To be fair, Byleth is at least a decent character and not a Corrin. I'm quite mixed with their moveset, the axe is fun to use but the spear is really annoying to try and hit people with. Still he's another Fire Emblem character from a series I don't care for and is shoved in my face by Nintendo.
:ultminmin - I'm going to offend someone on this thread for saying this but Min Min is probably the single most boring character in the DLC so far for me. We waited 6 months without knowing who the first character in the pass was and all she does is stretch her arms and kick flips to reflect. You know who can reflect projectiles? Mario with his cape. You know who can stretch far with their weapons? Literally every single distance demon character before her. I don't hate the character herself but damn... I didn't know I could dislike a character I'm apathetic to this much.
:ultsteve: - Oh boy, a cardboard box for a character, guess we should have seen this coming. He has a great moveset with lots to explore with it on many stages but it's Steve and I don't like Steve.
:ultsephiroth: - He is super cool and super fun to play as. He is a fantastic pick and that's all I've got to say for him.

I really liked the base roster additions. A lot of them had that "Why weren't they added sooner?" feeling, so it was great seeing them flesh out the list of Nintendo all-stars.

The DLC has been a mixed bag for me. Not great, but certainly not bad either. A lot of these characters feel more fitted for a PlayStation crossover game, but I suppose that's why a lot of people like them so much.

Honestly? Solid 9/10: Inklings, Isabelle, Min Min, Steve, Sephiroth, Byleth, Hero, Ridley, Dark Samus, and K. Rool are all from games I love. Terry and the Belmonts are the only ones who didn't do anything for me, and the rest are okay.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Echoes (except for Isabelle and Ken, who are semi-clones). I think Sakurai should have used the time he took for Richter, DS, Daisy, and Chrom to make Lucina and Dark Pit more different from their originals.

SNK is prob a no-hoper at this point

SEGA is actually something I've been musing over lately, namely thinking up a list of characters I think at the very least have a shot even if not necessarily likely, having decided on them for a multitude of different factors such as:

-Just being really ****ing big: second Sonic rep, Kiryu, Sakura, Arle

-Successful and notable modern IP: Valkyria Chronicles rep

-Legacy series with the added bonus of recent or upcoming new releases: Axel Stone, SMT rep

-General acclaim and prominence among their classic IP library: AiAi, NiGHTS

-A Terry type, someone who might not seem notable but has a surprising amount of legacy and influence once you dive in deeper: Phantasy Star rep, Ryo Hazuki

-Being representative of the work of a highly influential figure in the company's history: Ryo Hazuki again, Space Harrier

Bottom line, I think Sega has more potential candidates than most people here would think

Brawl's newcomers blew me away. Smash 3DS/Wii U was a mixed bag that killed my interest in the roster for the foreseeable futur, and Ultimate smacked me in the face and pulled me right back in.
A lot of dream picks I didn't think stood a chance at this point, a good mix of new and old faces, and a literal ported plant. I'm deadass lucky this roster even happened.

Heyy so this might be a little off topic but remember in Terry's reveal trailer they used a list of Nintendo consoles and stopped at the SNES to show the NEO-GEO? Does anyone know where I can find the full image of the list?

But to bring to topic back around what other fighters could they bring the list back for? An Atari fighter? A 3DO Fighter?

In terms of non-zero chance sure, but outside of Sonic, Yakuza, and maybe Monkey Ball, pretty much all of Sega's IPs I would put on the more obscure end (in USA at least). Hell if it weren't for me liking racing games of all things I probably wouldn't know any of them. I think we could see one though virtually based on how Nintendo's been liking to surprise us though. With all the Capcom talk speculation wise I think it'd be funny if smashboards was completely off the mark again and Sega definitely has the dark horse factor imo.

I think Isabelle is the first character where you can genuinely say that their moveset is undercooked. Other characters are bad and miss some potential, but none of them really scream "unfinished" like Isabelle's does.

...the spear is really annoying to try and hit people with.
The fact that his Forward Aerial has the slap sound effect bugs me to no end. It's his most important attack too so the fact that it doesn't sound right makes Byleth less satisfying to play as overall.

EDIT: It's probably why I don't really like Toon Link in this game. His sword sound effects are just...blegh.

instead of going further back, they go forward to the PS5.

The fact that his Forward Aerial has the slap sound effect bugs me to no end. It's his most important attack too so the fact that it doesn't sound right makes Byleth less satisfying to play as overall.
Well technically it does sound right.
Byleth's slapping you with the flat end of the spear for some godforsaken reason.
