Well technically it does sound right.
Byleth's slapping you with the flat end of the spear for some godforsaken reason.

It’s always bothered me in Kingdom Hearts that Sora uses the blunt side of the Keyblade. Y’know Sora, you could turn that sucker around and use it like a ****ing axe.

Guess maybe I'll ask the better question.

How are the newcomers as a whole so far for all of you?

:ultinkling::ultdaisy::ultridley::ultchrom::ultdarksamus:
:ultsimon::ultrichter::ultkrool::ultisabelle::ultken:
:ultincineroar::ultpiranha::ultjoker::ulthero::ultbanjokazooie:
:ult_terry::ultbyleth::ultminmin:ultsteve::ultsephiroth:
Okay, so:

  • As for characters they've overall picked - they've gone overall safe, but understandably so. While I'm the kind of guy who wants Sakurai / Nintendo to go a bit more risky in their choices, safe choices are not bad at all.

  • They're really well-designed too. I do have some issues with how they play - then again, that might be partly due to my own personal playing style, which is agressive and seeking to convert an opening into a 40-50 % damage string more often than not. Still, those issues are far from gamebreaking - most newcomers work well with the tools they've been given from the get go. Some (like Rool) have been buffed to at least some relevancy which is nice to see, There are still cases where some are overtuned and others undertuned... but that's practically unavoidable.

  • One weird observation is that several character's main strengths run into each other head on. The most obvious is how :ultsimon: , :ultbyleth: , :ultminmin and :ultsephiroth: all have "really long reach" and "extremely potent ledge-trapping" as some of their main selling points, but it's not the only one. :ultkrool: , :ultpiranha: and arguably :ulthero: are mainly meant to be zoners with a couple of CQC aspects to them. Etc. TBF, Smash is at 70+ characters now and some overlap is almost inevitable, so it isn't much of a criticism per se.

  • The Echoes, overall, could've used some more work. Isabelle counts here too due to her semi-clone status. But that in itself is indicative of how tight Ultimate's deadline likely was - if they wanted to differentiate more, even with something as minor to casual play as stat changes, it might've meant delaying the game further. Something Furukawa and Nintendo probably didn't want because Ultimate was the Holiday 2018 title and meant to help sell the online (uhmm... they succeeded.... I guess? No? Far from 100 % successful to say the least).

  • Finally - it might not be my personal favorite batch of newcomers (I'm always going to cling onto Melee's newcomers, as clone-heavy as it was) but overall it's a pretty damn good batch of newcomers so far.

I...what?

BYLETH YOU HACK! STAB THEM! STAB THEEEEEM!!!

or at least slash them with the non-flat end
(S)He's loaned that weapon right? No wonder (s)he doesn't know how to use it! (My headcanon is that Edelgard's start of darkness actually happened when Byleth loaned her axe for Smash. Maybe Dmitri went nuts because Byleth slaps people with his spear?)

So hold up

does this mean

that every sword and spear in smash

is really

a club? :nifty:

and no, Villager’s stick isn’t a club. Neither is Banjo’s brave instrument.

Well it's a key-blade- I suppose, they don't wanna turn it into a hammer or axe Sora bludgeons people to death with.

Really the keyblade is just a magic wand to channel light or darkness that cuts people. It's more symbolic of a weapon than it is a practical one.

Here is game idea I came up with.
Write pro-con for your most wanted. You can put iffy part in the middle
Sure, why not.

Crash Bandicoot

Pro
  • He was the huge PS1 mascot. Look, I can not overstate how big the PS1 was in terms of gaming history. Smash alone clearly loves the era, with us getting Richter, Cloud, Sephiroth, and Snake. But Crash is one of those truly huge names when you think of the PS1. Its usually Snake, Cloud, Crash, Lara Croft, maybe Alucard, and Spyro.
    • Unlike Lara and Spyro, Crash is not just stuck being a massive icon on one side of the world. Crash is one of the few western characters who have truly crossed over into Japan. His games did get slight changes, but Crash still has done well in terms of the Japanese market.
  • The Crash franchise is huge. Huge sales numbers back in the day and now. 50 million sales before Nitro Fueled and Its About Time. 10 million from the N Sane Trilogy alone. It is clear that while Crash took a bit of a break, he is here to stay.
  • Crash also is in the public eye right now. The fact his revivals have been as successful as they have been is a good sign for the wonder from down under.
  • Crash is a pretty popular choice overall. I know fan popularity is kind of bunk, but the amount of good will that you see towards Crash now for smash compared to five years ago is astounding. I would say he is one of the most overall wanted if you looked across the internet. I could pull from fan polls like with him topping the Source Gaming poll over Geno, or other big polls where Crash has done well, but the character is popular. Both in the West and to a lesser but still noticeable extent Japan.
Iffy
  • We have that new CTR demo...a year and a half after the game came out. Odds are this means nothing, and hey, if more of yall play CTR NF thats good in my book. Serious tangent please do its better than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and I would argue the best kart racer of all time with its main competition being SSASRT on PC.
  • The Crash franchise went on hiatus for a while until the N Sane Trilogy. That being said, Crash's revival is not too much of a hassle all things considered due to how it lines up timeline wise with Smash as a whole. N Sane came out in 2017, when we know DLC talks were finalized. Based on when we can assume DLC talks for FP2 happened, I doubt this is much of an issue.

Con
  • Activision is Activison. While they have shown they can work well with Nintendo, Activison Blizzard are no saints and love money. That being said, Nintendo has done business with Konami, so I doubt that it would be a big issue.
  • He is a western character. While Banjo and Steve show a Western character is possible, it still is something that weighs against him.

I like the concept of echoes a lot. I wish they went a little bit further in some places, but the ones we got are great picks. Big fans of Dark Samus, Chrom, Richter, and Ken even if I can't play him for crap. The newcomers overall I have liked a lot, overall a lot more than Sm4sh's. The only ones I do not like are Plant (where I think the moveset doesn't flow together as well as I would have liked it to and it is kind of a silly concept, still is at least interesting), Isabelle (the fandom's "wholesome" memes around Isabelle combined with her being a less fun version of Villager killed the character for me), and Byleth (the worst character by far, but I won't rant too much and be negative. Keep in mind this is not just fire emblem hate, I am a Corrin apologist). Even Incineroar, who I was sour towards because I wanted Lycanroc, Decidueye, and Mimikyu more is a barrel of fun and overall fun.

I can sometimes steer it in such a way to attract my brand of weirdos that think Pig Ganon or Gilgamesh for Smash is a legitimately good idea.
Oh god, imagine if he was in Smash and all his weapons were just the other Smash swordsmen's swords?

Master Sword
Exalted Falchion
Binding Blade
Galaxia
Ragnell
Buster Sword
Erdrick's Sword
Masamune

Infinite Anime Swordsman!

Another factor might be that Nintendo effectively set the terms for what to expect when it comes to games, and the 80s gaming PCs like the MSX might've followed (although I could be wrong here, granted). Something which didn't really happen elsewhere
Late response, but I did just remember this: The Family Computer was called that because Nintendo expected people to also do computery things with it, not just play games, even making accessories like a keyboard and modem for this. Unfortunately too many businesses including Nintendo itself focused more on its ability to play games, and with it being a huge hit, that was the only "computer gaming" Japan wanted for the most part.

Now I'm imagining him as a stance character that can assume gimmicks of the other swordsmen:

Forward Smash projectiles
Tipper
Hilter
Beeg sword
Aerial Smash Attacks
Monado Arts
Hitbox while charging Forward Smash
Crappy normals wait wut?

I don't think the world is ready...

Eh...that's how he is in Dissidia, and I don't particularly like it.

He's way cooler when he wields all his swords at the same time.

Edit: Oh snap, someone already made art for this and it was posted in the previous thread. :p

Nah his stance change has him randomly grab one sword, some have lower frame data, deal more damage, yada yada yada, and one only lets Gilgamesh do 0.1 percent with every hit

Smash Ultimate imo has the best newcomer lineup out of any game

the only few im iffy on are banjo, inceneroar and chrom other than that they are all really good

my favorite was Terry, his DLC felt more like a huge event compared to all the other detail I still think objectively if a person was to buy only 1 pack it should be terry's.

I really like Min Min, Inkling and Hero as well.

I do agree re: Plant, and I've voiced the opinion in the past that Plant lacks interesting normals to complement the specials and help make the moveset flow. Contrast K. Rool: he has the Belly Armor, two pretty good tilts (F and U Tilts) and a decently solid grab game to complement the Krown / Kannonballs. So that the opponent has to account for those things and not just recklessly rush in.

One way besides speeding Plant up a bit might be to give the attacks a bit more reach or a bit more interesting animations (slight tweaks like a more obvious swing / follow-through). Up tilt currently looks like a head tilt, for crying out loud.

Nah his stance change has him randomly grab one sword, some have lower frame data, deal more damage, yada yada yada, and one only lets Gilgamesh do 0.1 percent with every hit
Which would, of course, be the ultimate disrespect. Imagine Gilgamesh getting a randomly insane string... only for the 0,1 Excalipoor to be the killing blow right at the blast zone.

Kirby still doesn't have a villain
Sakurai if he ever reads this:

Bandana Dee would be a villain to some people's dreams.

Also if boss fights count they ****ed up not making Dr. Wily and the Black Knight also serve AT/boss double duty.

Kirby's always been underrepresented and whatever is represented are from Sakurai's games, the only things that aren't decades old are the png's and non-remix music tracks.
