I had a dream where I discovered a lost Game & Watch game called "Football" - it was a clone of Oil Panic, but instead of oil it was footballs falling through cracks in the ceiling, they would convert into oil when picked up, and then when dumped into the barrel they were just too hot for the guy holding the barrel to handle and scorched him even it landed, so it was an instant lose.

this would be visual redundancy on steroids and a really disappointing version of a mario castle stage... but god damn this would be the funniest smash stage ever.

Something I wonder about iterative sports games that I'm sure someone could answer: how did they handle the borderline-unrecognisable hardware shifts of the past? Is there still underlying PS1 source code hiding in the latest Madden?

The best way to implement a Mario Kart driver in Smash is Baby Mario and Luigi in the Goo-Goo Buggy - perhaps you could swap them for Baby Peach & Daisy given they don't have variant characters yet but Mario does - but I think they kill a lot of birds with one stone

1. Implement the babies without actually putting them in more harm's way than they would be in in Mario Kart (hell, the buggy itself is big enough compared to most other karts that you can probably have it be the hurtbox and not the babies)
2. The babies are typically associated (in a mainstream sense) with Kart above Island or PiT, something it's harder to say about other variant characters (given the babies are mostly Kart-exclusive nowadays) or Waluigi/Daisy who have their own sort of cult crowds and individualised fan-lore
3. Really distinctive kart design that is still clearly a vehicle
4. Signature item is the closest any Mario Kart item is to a conventional fighting weapon that a whole moveset could be built off of (essentially a living mace) - the chain chomp could also be the one getting grabbed (maybe a hurtbox that is immune to grabs but not hits?) since most of the "exceptionally" (not really) violent Smash moves are grabs of some kind.
5. Would to some extent represent Double Dash specifically, specificality is neat and Double Dash is probably the most item/offense-centric MK game.

Tails in Smash is funny, because by all means he is the next pick by Smash's traditional heirarchy, but he'd also blindside WAY more people than Knuckles or even Shadow would if he got in, he's just not in that conversation.

I think that when people discuss "If I was in charge of Smash..." hypotheticals, or really any major pop-culture directing job hypothetical, they don't realise how different their mentality would be when put on the hot seat, and that they can't simulate that change. Like, it is an inherent net positive that Gimblegorm's Super Fun House, made with royalty-free Unity assets and only providing 10 minutes of playtime, can find an audience. Someone will like it inevitably. It's an ultimately damaging band-aid compared to just... you know, vetting the games. The reason people are upset with eSlop is because they can't discover new content because of it, not because they're weaseling into the charts.

Where the hell else are you gonna put 80s content, but with Nintendo rep? At least assuming this game would be done on the weird middle-ground factor of Smash's 3P content. I doubt Pac-Man would get as much priority when Namco has such strong ties to the PS1 and PS2, and 80s rep in general doesn't make sense for a game targeted at PS (or worse yet Xbox) fans who likely would've only gotten into gaming in the late 90s or later, but adding Nintendo content already has an inherent "go out of your comfort zone" factor and inate headline drawing ability that you may as well play into to represent something it'd be hard to have otherwise.

Thinking more about Simpsons arcade (and its one-season-no-problem ilk: South Park N64 and SpongeBob SuperSponge) and I do wonder if video games based on shorter running shows/franchises would've also become a bit disjointed from the (retroactive) source material as time goes on.

Speaking on a show I do have a bit of authority on: Rocko's Modern Life: Spunky's Dangerous Day has quite a bit of that, but not much. It's based directly on the "Rocko saves Spunky from danger" plot that's mostly confined to season 1; Earl the Dog and Slippy the Slug - character who were meant to be major characters but very quickly disappeared - is present and one stage seems to be based on an unmade episode - Ironically, some elements actually became MORE true to the show retroactively (Earl got adopted into the Bigheads' household midway through the series, he's always in their home here; Filburt was meant to be a minor character but became prominent over time and is featured here). There is some other smaller weirdness in the game that is moreso just regular inaccuracies (for instance, some objects coming to life are friendly, when officially the malicious objects are just imaginary products of Rocko's paranoia and not a part of the show world - I would've missed that too if I hadn't read the pitch bibles). Rocko's crossover game appearances actually themselves in the modern (haha) day tend to suffer from "first 6 episodes and the movie" syndrome, there's a lot of Suck-O-Matic; a lot of garbage day goop; and a lot of flying houses.

It's funny how people got on NASB's case for using acquired characters, but had no problem with MVS including characters from a series that's arguably most iconic specific imagery is this:

I really love ROB's implementation into Smash as a whole, but I hate how he's the only character they won't let Subspace stay it's own thing for. The lack of diegetic Stack-Up/Gyromite content is perhaps an issue, but it's not a big deal, I don't even mind adding pathos to ROB in theory (I've imagined my fair share of tragicomedy Game Boy Camera fanfiction). Having this goofy little guy labled with "the last of his kind" as if that's a core trait of the character is just stupid.

I don't care how they do it, they must put ROB's egg in Smash.
