Idea: Pay-to-win sports in real life
It's been said that some Mario games like Super Princess Peach or Yoshi's Topsy Turvy feel like licensed games for dormant franchises, but Sonic Boom feels like it's a licensed game for specifically an early 2010's TV Show which now that I'm typing this out is probably due to the actual TV Show about it outclassing it in popularity so it isn't really that weird. (Sonic Lost World has those vibes too, but to a lesser extent.)
The best indie game platfighter rosters have at least one character so obscure that I don't know anything about before I see the roster.
Spongebob fans when the season 13 episode "Great White Snark" starts with Patrick seeing an ad on his TV (This contradicts the season 7 episode "Couch Sponge" where it is established that Patrick's TV is just a sand sculpture that he says only has access to "The Sand Channel")
