For the next Smash Bros story mode, I think it would be cool to fuse the progressions of Subspace Emissary and World of Light. The issue I have with Subspace's level design is that due to having to accommodate for every character the level design tends to be quite bland, but there are good bite sized challenges found within. I was thinking maybe a story mode could follow a style like Zelda 2, traveling a top-down overworld like World of Light and you fight monsters via random encounters. Additionally there are small bite-sized platforming challenges built around specific characters that can make those areas feel more distinct and memorable. Would that be a good progression system?
