I feel that EarthBound probably has a higher brand recognition among non-Nintendo fans now than a lot of Nintendo's former major IPs. (Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero, e.t.c.)

I had a dream where the Kirby analog horror series was revealed to have been made by Nintendo as an ARG to promote and kick off an entire grimdark cinematic universe based on gross-out 90s Nintendo commercials.

It's kinda funny that the Wii-era kids who grew up not understanding why people prefer Melee over Brawl now prefer MKW over 8D for the exact same reasons people prefer Melee over Brawl.

If I had to make a Smash newcomer lineup designed to sell DLC, I'd have a pattern:

1. 80s/earlier serious
2. 80s/earlier funny
3. 80s/earlier fantasy
4. 90s serious
5. 90s funny
6. 90s fantasy
7. 00s serious
8. 00s funny
9. 00s fantasy
10. modern serious
11. modern funny
12. modern fantasy

(Fantasy in this case, meaning the more lighthearted, modern anime/Disney-esque idea of fantasy. Crono would be fantasy, Dragonborn would be serious.)
That way every age group and tonal preferance has something at least. An example of the sort of lineup this could entail would be...

There are some series that might blur the lines a little here though.

If there was room for 16 characters, I'd add "era Nintendo" as an extra set - though if enough time has passed when this hypothetical game is released it could be a split of "10s tone" and "20s tone" instead.

Episodic cartoons can be super hard to get into in the streaming/piracy age - streaming services weren't really designed with non-serialised TV content in mind, especially legacy content. When I watched the Simpsons on Disney+, I just watched the episodes I remembered enjoying as a kid and the ones I missed that's premises intrigued me, but if I didn't grow up on Simpsons I'd have no clue where to start even with the general "seasons 2 through 8 good, seasons 1 and 9 through 12 alright, everything else bad" baseline - there's just so many seasons in the golden age alone and it's got such a slow start that it'd be really hard to tell which episode would give you the best basis for who these characters are in a show where every episode, sans a few gimmick/spotlight episodes, is intended to hook you in for more the next week. Shorter shows with 2 to 4 seasons, maybe 5, are easier to manage getting through the whole backlog of, but you still can't really get that non-completionist casual TV watching experience anymore.

A "random episode" button would be really appreciated on streaming services, especially with season narrowng. Maybe even a random episode playlist option to replicate the classic TV experience.

If I made a public domain themed fighting game, I'd probably focus on super obscure stuff rather than the characters people still use and/or are associated with Disney (though Pooh would be there for sure). I'd also take major liberties from the source materials to create a sort of shared universe that, without context, would be hard to recognise as a crossover.

If Sony made Smash, I'd probably want DK to be Nintendo's first rep, but if Microsoft made Smash I'd prefer Mario and/or Luigi; a non-Pikachu/Lucario/Charizard Pokémon; or Link - if only because DK would feel very strictly pattern based and like he was just added because of his connections to Rare.

While I do think the concept of Pibby is fundamentally stupid and more fit for a band's barely-legally-distinct T-shirt than a full series, I will at least give it credit for sticking entirely to cartoons unlike WB's other megacrossovers.

It's kinda funny how people will be super insecure about enjoying things like Kirby; Avatar; Harry Potter; e.t.c. and bring up its darker elements to prove "it's not (just) for kids", but then adult fans of stuff like Barney and Bob the Builder will be completely unashamed in their earnest enthusiasm, and celebrate its "kiddy" status/image

If there was a Disney platform fighter, I'd want it to have an extremely heavy emphasis on the animated canon and Pixar - if there was a 20 fighter roster, for example, I'd probably only want 3 or 4 characters who don't fit into those two camps at max, (not including Mick; Don; and Goof) and would much prefer acquired IPs over live action or TVA.

On a similar topic to that last post, Crash 3 wasn't as good as 1 or 2 IMO because it felt like it was desperately trying to compete with the likes of Spyro and Banjo with the permanent power-ups and vehicle levels rather than expanding upon the corridor gameplay. It's not a bad game objectively or subjectively, and even made some improvements over 2, but it certainly felt like it was taking too many cues from games that it had nothing in common with.

The whole idea of "corridor platformers being a cost-cutting measure" confuses me because when you consider 1. how much reference material and how many design analysises exist for collectathons compared to corridor games, and 2. how hard it is to properly balance out the levels and physics in a game designed to be hard compared to a game designed to elicit whimsy, it's probably not much easier if at all even considering the lower amount of assets to be made.

I think the episode I've enjoyed the most thus far in my Rocko watchthrough is Cruisin' - it starts off slow but once it hits the second segment (it's a full-length episode) it is incredible. Perfectly encapsulates the visual surrealism and heart that keeps me watching this show (there's one moment where the juxtaposition of a quick switch from sincerity to absurdity brought EarthBound of all things to mind, you'll know which scene if you've seen the episode), and has a pretty well-structured plot for a show that usually opts for stringing together gags out of a single theme or location (not that there's anything wrong with that of course). While it's possible my mind will be changed over the next 2 and a half seasons, this is absolutely what I'd consider the show's "Band Geeks" moment for now.

Another thought about this show: the whole idea of this being "an adult cartoon that aired on a kids' channel" is way overblown. There have been some "Wow! They got away with that?" moments for me, some of which have been full episodes like the deportion sham marriage episode and the infamous infidelity episode, but those moments are very few and far between - rather than being a sign of "aiming for the wrong audience", I feel that the show's protagonists being adults is its gimmick, and little to none of the stories thus far could've worked with kid or ambigiously-aged protagonists just as none of the Rugrats stories would work with school-attending 8-year-olds or none of Jimmy Neutron's stories would've worked with a run-of-the-mill above-average-IQ teacher's pet with no invention skills

I agree with this Tweet, but I also want to add that the reason Gumball's expressions in the later episodes don't hit right to me is because they just put another face on Gumball's body or vice versa most of the time - I much prefer the exaggerated off-model expressions in cartoons like Ren & Stimpy; the new SpongeBob episodes; or even (accidental/lazy as it may be) Steven Universe where they actually warp the existing character design to fit the emotion rather than outright replace it like a Dio meme.

I think a lot of BWD fans don't realise that him being a main character with lore prominence is the argument against him. His detractors don't think he's unimportant, they moreso don't want a character so hastily put together designwise to be important, especially when Kirby has a whole pool of great sidekick characters they're sitting on (Rick, Adeleine, and Gooey to name a few)
