  • “Archie, Winx Club, Powerpuff Girls, they’re all edgy teen dramas now! How can we compete using the HB back catalogue?”
“Well, Scooby Doo has teen characters so that’d be an easy adaptation”
“No, we’ve got to protect the brand, Scooby’s all about family fun!”
“Well... we could use a different chara-”
    “Velma show, you’re a genius!”
“I was actually going to suggest Jabberjaw or Goober and the Ghost Chasers but OK”
Everyone else towards the new NSO updates: “BOO! WHERE’S EARTHBOUND? CHRONO TRIGGER! MARIO RPG! MEGA MAN!”

Me: “Ooh, Fire and Ice! I’ve heard that’s really good.”

It’s funny how a lot of EB fans don’t realise the game literally only got a Western cult following because of people stumbling across it on ROM sites. It wasn’t Smash, the die-hard Western Mother fandom predates Smash 64 by years. Try some obscurities for once, you’ll find a new favourite.

I mean, one would think they would get the more popular games out of the way before getting to the obscure stuff

of course ideally they would just dump most of the games on there day 1 but nintendo and money have a love/hate relationship

Fire n Ice has never been re-released before and now goes for over $150 on the second hand market. As someone who paid $120 for it back in 2015, I can confirm it's an A Rank game for the system.

I love Earthbound just as much as the next person, but if it means we're getting hidden gems that haven't been re-released before or are expensive I don't mind waiting. There are now several options to play the former now anyway.
Why did they add swimming to Great Bay and Tortimer Island? They don’t work with the level layouts and utterly ruin the stages.

It does make for potential regarding screenshots.
Am I seeing things, is this an effect to make it look more “dream like” or does Balan Wonderworld somehow have texture warping in a modern game?
I watched a video on why Roger Rabbit would never be created today, and one of the comments (not the video) said it wouldn’t be “PC enough”.

Like... literally nothing about Roger Rabbit could be interpreted as offensive, except MAYBE Jessica, but even then she’s actually a character and really not that sexualised compared to other cartoon characters, even those aimed at children.

This is the age of Rick and Morty, South Park and Family Guy - cartoons don’t offend people any more unless they’re actually problematic and not just playing it up for a laugh. Back when Roger Rabbit came out the Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy were considered offensive.

Yeah the whole “You’re not allowed to say anything in 2021!” complaint holds a lot less weight when you realize that there was a time where things like D&D and Pokémon were considered offensive
You know how you’ll sometimes get videos in your YouTube recommended from news channels devoted to dead franchises (I’ve seen some for Disney Infinity, EarthBound, and Skylanders for example) where they struggle to find any interesting news at all, and use obviously fake rumours to sustain their sense of hope? That’d be the perfect basis for a Catastrophe Crow/Mario Party anti-piracy esque ARG.
Considering how much of a ruthless 60s capitalist Walt Disney was, if he did come back today somehow he’d be pretty shocked at some of the movies his name has been put to.

Monsters Inc. is about valuing ethics over profits and fixing corrupt systems, Soul is about not tying self worth to ambition or productivity, Cars is about how the big guys should help out the little guys, and Wall-E is y’know, Wall-E.

And he was pretty goddamned anti-Semitic.

There is some irony in Pete, Mickey Mouse's nemesis, often being depicted as a corrupt boss.

Corrupt people don't see themselves as the bad guys. I could easily imagine Disney seeing those films and nodding along with the messages, but getting angry and defensive when accused of not running his company in a way that matches them.

"Yeah other bosses can be corrupt, but not me! If those pro-union protestors treat me like their enemy, then they must be the real bad guys!" - Disney, probably.
TBH I’d prefer my favourite franchises to have a Sonic or Crash scenario where it’s mostly bad games but the good ones are excellent, over a Kirby scenario where there are no bad games, but also no games any better than good.
Brazil has a news show called Journal Hoje and its logo is a H. Just a H. And its theme song sounds like a boss battle theme in a Crash Bandicoot/Pokémon crossover.

they should put this in smash

call it a pokemon battle theme and it would fit right in!
American kids’ shows: “we gotta figure out a sneaky way to get our adult jokes past the kids’ heads, so parents won’t complain!”

British kids’ shows: “**** it, let’s write sex on his head.”
The concept of Kemono Friends is pretty creepy to me. Not because of the animation, not because of animals turning into cute girls, but rather because well... logistically it’s really messed up. So, all the animals at the zoo have turned into humans... and they keep them in the zoo? And use them as attractions? This is horrifying! I can take some objectively unnerving concepts being reworked as cute or silly, but this is... no. Just no. Am I missing some important context? I really cannot understand how the questions this raises could’ve passed by the creators’ heads.
Political humour in media, especially animation with how long it takes to make (looking at you modern Simpsons and Animaniacs reboot) only really works with either foresight or perpetuity. Topical event-related jokes work fine as social media posts, but for comedies that can’t be made in 6 seconds you should wait until they’ve long passed so the mention can be surprising and everybody knows the full story. Jokes about political inevitabilities that have been going on forever with no sign of stopping also work just fine and have the potential to age like a fine wine.
I know game design wasn’t really a thing in the early 80s, but even then I can’t help but feel a little frustrated that no 80s shmups replicated the shield system of Space Invaders. That was where the whole strategy of the game kicked in, and games like Galaga would’ve been better off with some variation of it.

On the flipside, I think it would have made the games feel more like Space Invaders knock offs. When I think of Space Invaders I think of the shields, and when I think of Galaga I think of its tractor beams.
Continuing from that last status, I have come up with a theory about the development of Arms: A certain Shintaro Jikumaru discovered the secret of multiversal travel and ventured into an alternate universe where Sega’s mascot is Ristar. He played through the Ristar back catalogue and when he got to Ristar Adventure 2 Battle, he decided to play the non-fleshed-out multiplayer minigame mode. Inspiration struck and combined with Jikumaru’s desire to make a game with a large fan wiki Arms was born. Unfortunately, the team was so caught up with the fact people couldn’t logically trace its origins that they didn’t think to extend the gameplay beyond that of Ristar Adventure 2 Battle’s multiplayer mode
If you use “freedom of speech” as a defence for anything in any context, your point is invalid on the spot. The western world’s freedom boner is the main reason we are still ravaged by racists and anti-vaxxers

Freedom of speech is also used as a defense for speeking out against corrupt government officials or agencies. For instance, it's been used as a defense for peaceful BLM protests in the US.

It's a double-edged sword. But I do agree that there are places to draw the line and its really frustrating when people abuse it to push harmful agendas like the ones you mentioned.
