Since I know you're one of the few Back Roomers that is also a snake plissken fan (aka: people I will save when the zombies come), I thought I'd recommend a movie I think you'd really dig.
It's called Pitch Black, and it's one of my favorite sci-fi movies. It's about this group of people on a commercial space shuttle that crash on this desert planet with a weird, three-star orbit. The main character is the pilot, who has to step up when her captain dies in the crash. Then you have a bunch of fun, eccentric characters, like a rich artifacts dealer, a kid, a muslim holy man with his followers, and a couple of bushwackers. Also, my favorite characters: William Johns, a space marshal of sorts transporting a fugitive back to prison, and the fugitive himself, Richard Rid****.
Rid**** is like Snake Plissken, if you moved him just slightly further down the moral line toward "evil/self-interest". You never really know what he's going to do. It takes liberal inspiration from Plissken, but makes a fresh character out of him in this way. Also, PB has two things on the Escape films: A worthy rival (Johns, Rid****'s longstanding arch-nemesis; their chemistry reeks of history and mutual respect/hate, it's great) which Snake never really had because he's better and smarter than everyone. And secondly, by making the pilot the protagonist instead of either Johns or Rid****, they just kind of have this person trapped in a moral conflict they don't really want anything to do with. Characters like Johns and Rid**** are more interesting from the outside looking in.
So, yeah, I really think you'd dig it. Also there's a sequel but god damn it it sucks. It has some good bits, but it also sucks. But you can check it out if you like PB enough. Or you could just get the 360 game, which is actually two games in one, and has lots of that Johns/Rid**** history hinted at in the first film. And it's just so damn fun.
