  • Ah, well yeah, reading only gets you so far. It's pretty much one of the first steps you should take as an aspiring competitive player, if you have the option available of course! What you need after reading it and understanding the majority, is to go out and play, and try out many different things. Eventually you'll figure out what works and what doesn't, then it's just a matter of saving your matches' replays, then watching the after a day or two to figure out what you need to stop doing, or what you should do better.

    All in due time, my good man! No one gets good overnight, and at the same time you're getting better, so is everyone else, so at times it may feel like you're not getting anywhere... But it's not true, it's just that everyone else is getting better as well!
    Hmm, wow, you read em all? Very nice!

    I'm gonna have to search around for some, since those are the most detailed articles that a PR player has made up until now. Don't know where I'll be able to find some more, so I'm gonna have to say "check out the threads in the Tactical Discussion forum" for now. : |
    You need to know your character first. By that I mean know the range on all their attacks, how fast the attack is, and how long the attack is. Once you know all that then learn their ATs and practice them

    Once you do all of that you just need to know learn your match ups. If you can do all of that then you will be better then most people.
    Honest to goodness dude - I used to play against 2 level 9 computers on a team against me with team attack off. Then I just played like crazy with the local guys.
    Really? Do you still play with Zelda? I'm decent with Zelda, but I don't know if I'm that good. I think I spam Din's flame a bit too much :laugh:. But I'm not a spammer!! I don't really like spamming anyways.
    And I think you should stick with Pit too. Snake has such a different playstyle that it feels weird every time I try to play as him. And yeah, Pit is fun ^__^. When I first tried him, I knew he was my main ^__^.

    And thanks ^__^. Marth was my main in Melee, and I thought I wasn't going to see him again in Brawl, so I just went with Pit for a while. But then when I found out he was, I didn't really want to make him my secondary. So I decided to make them both my mains ^__^. Weird, huh? And I'm not really that active in the Marth boards. Too loyal to the Pit boards right now :laugh:. But I'll try to be more active in the Marth boards someday.
    Ah, I see... Cause I never saw one of your posts or something, and I don't remember talking to you... so I was kinda confused. o.o
    Yeah I know. I think what you did, did affect the Pit boards, though.
    And thanks, I'm sure I will share those secrets with you ^__^.
    And, good luck with your Pit. I knew that I wanted to improve before I came to smashboards. I luckily found it, and I think I've really improved since then. I'm sure if you keep trying you'll find a way to improve.
    I feel that I have divided myself up too much. I main Pit and Marth and my secondaries are Kirby and Zelda. I hope that I will be able to master them all (Pit and Marth most of all), but I fear that it's not possible. But I keep trying.
    Anyways, I'll add you as a friend. Sorry for the Brief rambling there.
    Oh my, offline? I'm sorry I didn't read your post before asking you :(. The tournaments online, I sincerely apologize :(.

    Although, I do agree with you that we do need to have Pit's reputation improved. Your thread has gotten quite active (Even though it has drifted a little off topic).
    Hello. I've got a question about that one thread you posted about tournament results...

    The guys I'm working with probably won't like me revealing it, but I'm part of the Group that's organizing the next Gym Leader tournament. I'm a Gym Leader and plan on using Pit. But since I AM a Gym Leader I cannot advance, I can only hinder the contestants progress. Do you think I can post how many times I win with Pit in your Tournament results thread?
    Thanks I wish excel was in NE :/ I don't know how I get good lol, at first I even placed last at tournaments while excel was top 3, I get good practing and watching my own vids and see what I did wrong, and when I didn't mind it excel and me were an often Grand Finals. In matches now I think of my oponent's bad habits and find options to how to punish them but being aware if it's a bait. I also bait a lot and made them think that I have bad habits like spotdodging a lot or rolling but when the time comes I take them for surprise.
    I moved here begins of march and my first tournament was today the results are up, I did good considering I wasn't playing for a long time but I think I could have won If I were more prepared.
    I'm not on college right now and I'm working helping my uncle to clean some buildings but I'll go to college as soon as the new semester starts.
    I moved here with my father last month, my mother died in june 2009 and I deciced to go with my father.
    (Part 2)

    In brawl, defensive options are really important, especially against a character like MK who can gimp you with one move that covers a lot of characters options. If your character can not mix up their recovery as to not kill themselves and to avoid at least some of MKs gimping tactics, then you will obviously have a really hard time recovering against any competant MK.
    Characters with good options, relatively speaking have
    for any given situation, a character has multiple courses of action.
    If we take Link for example, his fastest move is jab (7 frames). His fastest oos option is like 13 frames (shield grab). In other words Link has a terrible shield, and he obviously does not have many options once forced into one.
    Taking your point with MK, they can shuttle loop oos, use his ridiculously fast forward roll, aerial oos, etc etc.
    Thats not as abstract as it goes however. Options are created (and discovered) from character properties. Marth is reasonably floaty, but has a FAST (top third of the cast) fast fall, he also has the first hit of dancing blade that cancels his fast fall and has a bit of an air stall property (like foxs shine); to me that means Marth has a ****ton of options that can be readily used by a player in the air.
    Yeah we played, and the matches were craaaaazy close. The third game we were on FD and I had 150% and she had 152% and we both faired each other and she ended up dieing like one millisecond before me. I think I'm better at most matchups than she is (and she was rusty i think), but we were so close going peach vs. peach.
    Thanks! I finally placed well lol. Are you going to the next MAS? Peaches are showing up all over the place, it's awesome!

    Gymnastics is going great. I came in first on 2 events in my conference yesterday morning :D I think it's the only thing i've ever won in my life lol.
    Yep, I hear you got TO'd by my doubles partner (TWSS)! Who knows if he would've won had I not told him to try to time people out if he wanted to win. I'm such a jerk!

    And yeah, I'm surprised with how well I did with Quik's MK. I was more or less playing by the seat of my pants, since it was my first attempt at playing vs an above average player as MK. I'm gonna keep training and see where it takes me. Chances are, he just wasn't tornadoing enough lol
    Read the stickies. Honestly, that has all the basic info. To get better at reading/predicting, you just have to play a lot. That is really all I can say lol. I'm not a very good teacher ^_^''
    well when ur playing mk u first have to determine whether or not the mk ur playing like to dair camp>tornado. if thats the case i recommend u learning how to get a few uairs in while the mk u play dair camps in friendlies. if u r in tourney then u need to play with extreme caution. do not attempt to attack in tourney if u arent used to it for dair campers. wait till they run out of jumps and either have to land or use tornado. if they tornado and try to hit u with it try to shield it(angle it up always) and then try to grab them when they land after using the tornado. if they tornado u and then run away in the tornado they can either land on the stage or on a platform. if they land far away on the stage and u r running at them REMEMBER that they will almost always spotdodge when they land out of the tornado. wait for it then grab them. or grab them as soon as they land on the ground. if they land on a platform then use ur nair to punish or uair>bair. if they are tornadoing a lot remember to space so that ur shield doesnt get to diminished. if u feel ur shield will get shieldpoked u can always spotdodge the ending part of tornado. o, u can also dsmash tornado.

    if the mk u fight know how to fight on the ground then im sure that u r aware that dtilt/ftilt is ****. dsmash is easy to punish with a spotdodge. if u r in front of mk and u spotdodge the dsmash u can use ur dsmash(recommended). if u r out of range for a dsmash then use your dtilt. pikas dtilt is very, very important in this matchup. if u r behind him and facing him u also should dsmash. if u r behind him and facing away then i recommend either an utilt or uair. i u do get an uair try to footstool the mk on the ground and qac lock him. that or use use uair>nair combo. if the mk is ftilting u wait to attack. no matter what u r probably not going to get in an attack b4 the ftilt is finished. always wait for the 3 hit of ftilt or for mk to stop and then try using his dtilt or dsmash. if u can shield dtilt then u can spotdodge it if the mk keeps using it, which is very likely. just keep shielding>spotdodging until the mk get near and u can grab him.

    now for things that can be helpful:

    dtilt is ur best spacing tool. use it. get used to incorporating dtilt>fsmash(the pikaslide) because it is a very safe move and u will see that many people will run into your fsmash.

    getting behind mk is a good option most of the time, but the mk can nair oos so be aware that it can hurt u pretty well.

    mk should fear ur grab. learn the cg and u can get him to 70%. if the mk doesnt know about this then learn to predict spotdodges and grab him at low percents and punish with ur cg. eventually the mk will dair camp u until they get above 60%.

    NEVER jump after mk fthrows u. u will always get shuttle looped.
    o i totally misunderstood. haha. aight well lemme go gets some of my favorite mk vs pika vids and then ill help ya out with what i can.

    what seems to be the biggest problem though?
    well in all truthfullness mk doesnt really need a backup but i do know someone who mains MK and seconds pika and it works out very well for him. the thing about playing pika is that u always need to put yourself into a safe position and be willing to camp. the best way to learn pika, after mastering the moveset of course, is to watch videos.

    i did write this article about how to be a better player and its in the pika character boards thread if u want to read it. truthfully article has everything u need to know if u want to step ur game up to the next level.
    Keep trying if you want, I am close friends with several pro players, and they do there best to HELP me, not hinder me. I ask them for MU advice all the time (anther, lain, Judge, Mikey lenetia) and they all agree, pit vrs MK is just to difficult if the MK knows to not let you camp. I cant view youtube vids right now because im at work, but if they are vids of masashi, they are irrelevant because (hate to break it to you) japan smash is bad.
    Those friendlies were pretty good ^^ We're really close together I think, so it would be awesome to play again sometime. Hopefully we both get better!
    You loose, I hate to break it to you, but he conciders me a very good pit (as far as pit mains go) and he tells me to play wario vrs mk, because there is **** near no hope, all the MK has to do is run in and power shield your arrows. Im sure thats not what you wanted to hear but there it is. and im very good friends with nick (judge) so he is honest when he tells me things whenever he is over. we have smashfests together about 2 times a week.
    Brawl singles will go until around midnight, I think. I usually don't stay that long, but I think I will this time :)
    As some top player might not be able to attend every tournament, making a Power Ranking based only on them wouldn't make it be accurate. Tournament results will be references for the public of the Pit Forums. Yeah, Pit mainers will post their Top 10. Each position will be a certain number of points, the ROB Boards used the following ponctuation:

    1st = 10pts
    2nd = 9pts
    3rd = 8pts
    4th = 7pts
    5th = 6pts
    6th = 5pts
    7th = 4pts
    8th = 3pts
    9th = 2pts
    10th = 1pts

    You'll need to count every vote and make a top 10 from the results, the higher ponctuation, the higher position. You should then just think in one date to start and in another to finish. Here are the ROB Power Rankings in case you would like to see. And here its discussion.
    I have.

    The ROB Power Rankings was updated today, who made it shared the method used with me. So yeah, I can tell you same ideas. When you want so, just say. :)
    I used to spend an extraordinary amount of time on Smashboards researching every character to the point where I knew options out of situations based on the data of the two characters. For example, if a DDD comes down on a Meta Knight with Dair and auto-cancels after hitting the last hit at 0 percent, DDD has a free utilt if the MK tries to do anything but jump.

    My recommendation is to study habits in matchups. Try to experiment in friendlies on mains of characters and see what the common reaction is to things you like to do. If you learn this, you should easily be able to devise a way to punish that reaction (an example of this would be that most people try to spot dodge when being CGed by DDD so I'll do a dash attack at the end to kill them for trying to escape). It's also helpful to know the type of player and how to counter them, so if you realize a player is too aggressive, be prepared with a battle plan that punishes that. Other than that, it's all practicing and knowing your options out of any given situation.
    on top of what seibrik said he was just ridiculously smart and when he needed to be he was campy, he just knew how to fight well close up and far away cant really tell you specifics thoiugh, sorry :/
