Overwatch is a really curious case
A game that was initially a bit of a laughing stock by TF2 fans but became one of the best multiplayer experiences and liked by critics. But even back in it's prime it still had some big problems that plagued it like an Incomplete and vague story and being one of the poster children for the backlash against Lootboxes.
And then when Blizzard continued to prove to everyone that they are run by literal cartoon villains, and Overwatch became the laughing stock it is today.
I'm trying to figure out why Overwatch took the force of the backlash, Even losing a deal with LEGO, The company that continues to make Harry Potter sets. It definitely starts with Overwatch 2 and how it was rushed in all regards with bad advertising.
Now that the game is in the best state it has been since Overwatch 1, It is even more hated, being the poster child of awful Item shop and Battle Pass monetization despite not being the first or the worst in that regard. I have also seen more made up controversies for this game that people are choosing to believe more than many others. The item shop is actually bad so that makes sense why people hate it. I guess it all just comes back around to how badly Overwatch 2 was handled, From advertising it as a sequel despite it being a 2.0 update, to releasing it early and pissing off people who were excited for 2 and pissing off people who liked Overwatch 1. Mix that in with TF2 posting and the aforementioned Cartoon villain suits, You get the Overwatch 2 backlash
It also is a really easy game to make fun of lol.
