I do not know why Sonic is considered to be responsible for one of the delays for Brawl. Sure, he might have had a hand in some of it, being added in late and all, but the game was delayed for balancing things out from what I recall. Now, I can see that Sonic was announced the same day they said they would delay Brawl's release, but Sonic was being made and added in Brawl long before his announcement, so balance changes would have to be made by then, and since making a character takes time, the game could have been delayed at any time during Sonic's development other than when they chose to do so. If it was earlier, we would probably not know if Sonic was the cause at all for the delay. That said, there can't be enough to say that Sonic was the cause of the delay, let alone the only cause.
Also, Brawl was set to be released when the Wii would come out, then was delayed long before Sonic's announcement, was it not? Either way, I think Brawl had a delay before Sonic and the delay that came with him. It is possible Sonic was a factor for the first delay, but for balancing and all, there are more characters to take into consideration, and they all must be balanced in relation to each other, so Sonic is not the sole reason for delaying a game, let alone the sole reason for balancing. Plus, let's be honest, Sakurai was not good with balancing at the time and maybe even now, so I doubt he was working on balancing the game only in order for him to delay a game like Brawl.
