The chances are you're probably trying to copy the best of your character. I am a link/sheik main so I watch germ, skler, hld and m2k,Lucien,KDJ videos, try to learn from what they are doing with those characters. But I noticed that while I am taking points from them Im developing my own style.
Before hand I was stuck in simply trying to emulate a pro style.

Anyone else get stuck in this emulation mode? or have you always had your own style?

Emulate then personalize.

There weren't any good pikas back in the day. So my own style all the way. I definately steal stuff from people though, if I see something neat and think it will help my game.

Thumbs up yo. Watch Falco vidz all dai, take what they do, but make it your own. GENESIS Zhu vs Lambchops friendlies made me learn alot of new things, as well as APEX Falco Round Robin (idk dittoes make you want to learn).

I don't know overall I have a different twist on everyone I play as. I've never seen anyone move like how I do. I DD and WD at the same time so it is near impossible to read my movement. Really it took me forever to master my movement. But really I play really smart and techinal and then I do dumb things that are impossible to predict like i'll force them near the edge as fox and i'll start f-smashing.

Or i'll DD around in their face and then just start laser camping hard. and rush them. i'll slow down speed up attack nothing and pull some s*** out my a**.

also I know no one does some things I do as pichu. I play very pateince spacing game and maybe i'll aproach with a number of different mix-ups. once I get them to mess up or i'm close enough so they can't play the movement spacing game i'll do wierd things like side-B. but if I have pressure i'll quickly. If I hit a sheild i'll start pressureing. if they tech or land on a platform i'll jolt and abuse air moves.

mostly vs FFers of course. I do a lot of mix-ups and mindgames and random dumb moves

okay ICG, thats enough, I don't want you to choke.
I used to try to emulate everybody, I tried to pick up every character and didn't have my priorities when it came to knowing who/what to learn. I thought wavedashing made you amazing.
Speaking of wavedashing, Aniki is the best link ever.
Honestly, Germ is a respectable player, but I've seen him play against good people and it really shows that either he doesn't do well under pressure, or he is good against his team mates. IDK for sure.
Also, Captain jack played sheik in what we used to consider unorthodox, but I think that now that her metagame has developed, we don't give him enough credit.

Yea, I tried emulating m2k kinda closely when it came to sheik.

But I decided to stop trying so hard and play based on my strengths and likes more than specific strategies.

I improved quite a lot by defining my own playstyle :)

Now I just really use certain tricks that players use instead of entire strategies (though I still occasionally use those too just not nearly as much).

i have a very odd play style its not really based off anyone else but if anything i try to base it off of wobble's play style, but some of his stuff i disagree with which i shouldn't since it works.

but over all i fail at it and only do decent at tournaments

no one really to learn from beside wobbles or fly for IC.

if i could become anyone i would merge together wobbles and chudat

wobbles for the tricks and chudat for the non-tremor hands :D and amazing reading skills/mindgames.

I wanted to play like Shiz when I started Falco but I sucked at it really badly lol. I ended up just taking TONS of combos/combo-starters from him(still do =p) and making my own way with Falco, taking a lot from Chops and Mango along the way. I probably took from Zhu as well.

Didn't help Shiz stopped playing(for a while) for the most part not long after I began maining Falco in 08. =(

I never try to emulate anyone because I never watch videos of anyone. Everything I know about my character is self discovered.

I actually feel like this is the absolute best way to learn you character. Don't watch vids or read guides. Just play them for a couple months and find out what their all about. Get pretty good with them, then look up vids and guides, by that time you have your own play style and can just add certain tricks to your arsenal.

Sure my style differs from pros. They do it right; I do it wrong.

i punish my opponent's shielding habits with shieldbreakers instead of grabs. and when they get nervous il just punish their spot dodges and rolls.

you dont even need to have a style

just tomahawk

seriously tho

everyone has their own style

theres no 2 people that would do that same thing in every situation the exact same way

we all think different

This is interesting.
My Ice Climbers are almost entirely emulated, I'm sad to say. However, I am attempting to develop my own continuous de-synch style with them.
My Fox is emulated :(
My Pichu is definitely my own style, heavy use of Perfect Agility compared to other players I've seen.

Tried to emulate Zhu, now im kinda thinking my Falco would suit me better if I was more of a DrPP Falco, cause me and PP have the same philosophy.

I watch everyone lol

when i think of falco, i think of like..3 styles, obviously this is pretty narrow, but just from a broad, not so specific perspective;

chops/Shiz style; overly agressive with precise combo game and absurd laser pressure, but can also get punished more often i'd say.

Dr.pp style; cautious, more 'low risk highreward 'situations, very smart, precise, etc. everyone knows his style.

zhu style?; i see his style as a balance of dr.pp and shiz/chops almost. if i had to categorize it. smart and can be safe when needed, but also a solid agressive game when needed too. solid lasers, but not too many.

and ultimately i'm obsessed with the shiz/chops style, so i dedicate my smash viewings to watching them two, and mango's falco allllllll the time, just to kind of 'lodge' a style in my head (and to catch all the **** they do right/wrong), and then of course the smarts from mango's falco help.

also been getting lots of help from my baby SLEEPYK, who's helping me develop my skill alot.

people tell me often my style reminds them of chops/shiz, so i can tell my hours of watching chops/shiz all day is developing in, it's awesome :)

sorry if this isn't what you meant i started ranting eventually.

I have my character theory down, and I'm technical enough to do anything I need to. The big thing that separates me from the 'pro' Samus's is my problem with hesitation, and my ability to adapt on the fly.
The high level players can always flow from one thing to another without hesitating, and they play intelligently while doing so.
So yeah I'm working on it.

I'm the exact same way with my characters, but at the same time I feel like watching the pros can't hurt at all, even if its only for a few tricks.

I think my Samus was mostly Wes-influenced, it's too aggressive and reckless.

It plays really schizophrenically. When I'm on the defensive, I start trying to be like HugS, when I'm edgeguarding, I try to think I'm DarkMike, and when I'm comboing, I try to think I'm spaceballs. When I'm in a neutral situation, I try to think I'm Darrell.

switch ya style up if haters hate let em hate watch the money pile up
Kanye ftw. My Marth learned all its tricks from Ken and Drephen, only recently did I begin to watch M2K or IB, which means I play pretty outdatedly, Airdodging to the stage too much and Fsmashing too much respectively. I also SHDfair for no reason other than to show people I can do it, so there like oh yeah this kids legit while they easily KO me. lol

When you don't have that many players representing your character (Fumi, Svampen... that's it lol) you're kinda forced to think up your own style that can compete in the current metagame through lots of trial & error. I'm still developing my own style, but it seems to be most reminiscent of Fumi, looking back at his vids now (haven't done that in a while).
