I see.

Well since the startup for down B diminished I'd assume you can abuse/time the invincibility frames by ataching and reataching yourself against characters with tethers or others that have to autosnap the edge?

Or even use the invincibility as protection against an attack aimed at you at the edge then counter attack?

But i guess thats eaiser said then done.

The restrictions for actually doing it correctly would keep us from being permanently invincible I believe (could test frame by frame, but lazy). Either way, the range for downB is deceivingly far. You can definitely keep yourself from getting hit provided you're in downB range or you can try to snatch the ledge before your opponent can get to it; however, that's risky in itself if you don't know when to use/not use it.

I think see what you mean. I just recently got gimped for trying to down b to edge when my opponent was to close for it to be used safely.

I beleive in the video thread a Japanesse yoshi does the no startup down b perfectly. Doesnt show how its done however.

Thought I made the post yesterday...

Anyways, you just push for downB, but the analog stick needs to go back to neutral position 1 frame later (approximately 1/60th of a second).

You can skip having to use the analog stick by using down on the Cstick because the game automatically assumes it's back to neutral after placing it in a direction. For this method, you would just have to make sure you get the Cstick and B button done at the same time.

Either way, in the grand scheme of things, characters don't evolve if people are too scared to experiment. Of course it's important to keep the basics as solid as possible, but sectioning oneself from learning new things just hinders them in the long run imo.

Also, thanks. Takatomon da bess. XD

So hitting the C stick also resets the analog stick position to neutral?

Leave the analog stick at neutral when doing the Cstick method. The game only inputs 1 frame of the direction you make for the Cstick, then resets back to neutral.

But why does hitting up on the C stick work? Is it so that after inputting down B, if you input up on the C-stick on the next frame, it registers as an upward input, thereby canceling that downward input from the analog?

I'm just making a guess, but the c-stick does have movement as part of its input as seen in smash DI, so I'm going to go with Silent Beast's explanation unless someone else wants to shed light.

Which brings up a question, is it possible to achieve this same effect my csticking toward the edge, like a left or right c-stick input?

You mean in terms of canceling the down B? I don't see why not, but if you mistime it, you'd side B, whereas if you C stick up, you'll egg toss and avoid killing yourself.

I can't exactly answer that question SB. I'd probably need to mess around with it more if I ever turn on my Wii again.

So I hate to say it, but I feel like I'm starting to lose a lot of interest in competing in this game. I haven't really played offline as much as I used to and the last time I did, I didn't even bother going Yoshi. I just messed around with Jigglypuff and Luigi for most of the day. It's kinda been like this since Apex. Not many know, but Apex really got me down and I mean reaaaaallly down. I'm starting to think the frustration is just killing the game for me at this point. xD I might be going to a tourney this weekend so I'm gonna see how things go. Hopefully my competitive spirit will reawaken. :)

No surprise.
People get tired of the game after almost 5 years, along with people quitting and growing up with life eventually getting the best of everyone. Whether it be college, work, or just finding better things to do rather than spend $30-500 bucks to play brawl.

I dont think i'm really going to enter the brawl competitive scene. I mean, it would be fun but I think waiting until smash4 comes out would be a better idea. Besides iirc a ton of smashers quit brawl, as well as melee.

Holy ****, you can't read Slush's posts now on the red skin due to color fonts. Glad they fix it though.

Anyways, you already quit. So there wouldn't be a point in having a mentor now until Smash 4 lol.

@Courage, that's on you. You can at least play now and get some experience so that it'll carry into Smash 4. It's better than having zero experience.

@Raptor, you've been playing Smash extensively since you started (afaik). While being top requires a lot of dedication, it also causes you to being frustrated more and bored with the game. It's a trade-off from wanting to be the best. At this point, just play it sparingly until you feel a drive again. You just need to keep your execution and tech skills intact on a monthly basis, and you won't really lose much, unlike other technical games.

Why wait for Smash4?
If Smash4 ends up being competitive worthy, then you'll be glad to know that you spent some time in the competitive scene. You can't catch the 300 mph train of opportunity unless you can accelerate a lot or and already at 250mph. You know what I mean?

My weekend ends whether I want to or not. Either way, it was ok. Good cause I got to watch one of my old youth teams that I filmed in the past win a tournament. Bad cause it was below freezing during the two days I had to film that weekend...

I'm on March Break, so yay for me lol
I go back March 11th though.

Also, FINALLY there's gonna be another tourney in my area on March 30th. It's on a Saturday too, so I think my sister can bring me & pick me up. XP
--------------
I got into the Brawl scene pretty dang late (my first tourney was in June 2012 looool) but then again I'm only 15. Game came out when I was 1o, and I remember I wouldn't do my homework most of the time to play Brawl xD

Though I can see how the game can be frustrating/draining as a top player. =P

Also, I'll probably quit Brawl once I get the Wii U + Smash 4. Then I'll be on a fresh start for that game. :p

Nice! I'm Happy for you. I hope you weren't to cold. Haha, well you were the guy I wanted to see. Since like around three pages, I explained to you guys that I haven't used Yoshi In a long while. Been focusing on Link more, and I wanted to put another main on my roaster. Plus life work... I went back to doing my dr... didn't work like it use to. I could like do like six to seven max and mess up. I was really upset.... cause I was setting up my combo video to be finished. I might as well make it a trailer then... So I went again to learn your way of preforming dr. I kind of got the hang of it... one minute I'm doing It decently. The other I've lost my rhyme... what are some tips other than wearing gloves that will help me? Also, I don't use a official classic gamecube controller.
I use a Game stop one. Reason why Is It feels weird on doing it on that small controller... I like big controllers. The game stop one Is very big, and Is perfect for me. So yeah, If you don't mind to help me out. I'd greatly appreciate it. I have my scrub knowledge of dr. I just need to find my rhyme again. What kind of Sport was it anyway? Hope they won! Be blessed

I'd be very interested in seeing a trailer GYK, good luck if you do one!
I wish I could offer advice for DR but idk much about it at all, and I use X,X,A (Hard to be consistent with it like this though) rather than custom controls like most others. It's a shame cause I want to capitalize on Yoshi's speed and mobility in my play style (gonna be the fastest Yoshi ;) ), and DR would really help with that, but I couldn't stand using the other control scheme.>_>

Also, I've got three tournaments coming up, one this weekend and one the next, then next month I'm going interstate for my first time for a major :bee: (Actually, maybe even 4, but depends if I'm interstate at that time or not) HOPING that I bring home good results.

Haha, I thank you for your love towards my effort on (at least) completing my combo video trailer... though I had everything planned in Aib. Was going to make a Yoshi community combo video, (Tarex my boy, Zudenka,Slice, and Kam) but you guys weren't going to be in it:( Sorry, I didn't have any mercy towards American brawlers back then. Whether It was a simple or big I would explode on anyone. (IT'S NOT JUST YOU GUYS!)Yeah... dr Is all about Rhyme. That's how I see it. It's like preforming Marth's dancing blade. Except a little more difficult. I remember In Aib I would say to others to never learn to dr. After I was banned from Aib (you know why... I hope) I started to learn dr. I couldn't believe It... It's beyond useful, and It will help you In your game-play. Being flashy, getting back on stage, and everyone's favorite. Mindgames! Anyway, I wish the best for you Nikes. Thank you for continuing to be a friendly Dino:) I know I've stabbed you guys out of the blue, but something that I've "always" and "continued" to explain, and preach.
"THERE IS ALWAYS A REASON FOR A FIGHT!" Whether you know what It is, or have no idea what that conundrum is. What you guys should of did before was "ask" me what the flip is the problem. Of course you guys didn't think it was serious... <.< yeah.

I don't know why but Sunny's signature Is hilarious xD His pose xD Be blessed all~

I was too cold. I hate the cold because it feels like people are just slowly pushing needles into every part of your body, and the colder you get, the further those needles are pushed (which then numbness & pain comes). It was baseball. We've been following them since they were about 7 years old (I believe). Even though the team broke up last year, we're following the two teams (of the original). One of them won the championship (10U), so I was happy to see their skill as a team didn't diminish too much from the break up.

Anyways, it depends on how you're messing up the DR. I've used the big Gamestop controller before, so I might have an idea how you're messing up, but I'll give a list of possible mess ups with solutions.

Problem - Short Hop Aerial
  • You could be missing the first or second jump button from trying to input the moves too fast or not pushing down hard enough while going through the motion.
Problem - Double Jump Aerial
  • You are inputting the motion too slow.
Problem - Double Jump
  • You're inputting the motion slightly slow. The aerial is inputted on the same frame as Yoshi leaving the ground (frame 7) causing the aerial to not register in game. It's a rare case, but it can happen.
Those are the most common issues people have when doing DR. I suspect your issue might be the second problem because of the distance of the Cstick from the B button. The slightly extra space compared to the official GC controller will force you to move your thumb faster, which can often mess up the motion more often. I don't see the first being an issue due to the buttons on that controller being much more pronounced than the official GC controller, but it can happen.

Also, I use gloves for more than just DR (even though it stemmed from that initially). Gloves not only help me do DR more consistently, but it helps me keep my hands dry and warm (both very important to me as I can't play with sweaty or cold hands).

I'd be very interested in seeing a trailer GYK, good luck if you do one!

XXA is a viable method, but certainly on the level of consistency as YBC. Reason is because XXA forces a sort of spasm method from your arm to get the inputs out quick enough. That spasm takes its toll on your endurance throughout the set (especially the tournament). YBC enforces a sliding method, which takes much less effort on the body. Tap + XA takes less effort than XXA, but the timing gets a little weird if you're trying to do it back to back. Still, good luck on your tournaments.

Bit unrelated to the topic right now, but gonna post it here.

With a new era of Yoshi's swimming in and also a new bleh layout, I've been thinking of making a new tournament results thread. Why? Cause the current one is the old one lil B and I have been updating over the years and it's getting about as clunky as user groups on the old server host.

Also, OP post getting too long when it has about 150+ something tournament thread links and results of old Yoshi's that're no longer relevant or just being old tournaments that date back to 2 or 3 years ago. Feb 10th marks 5 years since the games release while for most of us in the US it's March 9th.

Depending if my tower doesn't crash on me again (fought with it last night for an hour until I gave up and when I was planning to make this post), I'll make the thread once I get back from HOBO 39 this weekend on Saturday or Sunday, very likely Saturday since we're not taking the housing invitation most likely. March 9th, fitting day as any to start a new thread after half a decade don't you guys think?

So until Saturday, look at the current thread's OP and decide what you feel like should be changed around and we can make the thread a bit more active, clean, and worth putting our tournament placings for other Yoshis and players alike to see on this meh forum.

Good morning! (On my end) Wow! You really answered all my questions! Thank you Scatz:) Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. Ever been to Fresno Park? You'll forget your name, because of how frozen your brain will be. It's to go with family. Show some snowballs, and fun. Yeah, that's the one. Yoshi just does a short hop down air. I know I can have a rhyme to this. I just need some assistance from the creator himself. Well I hope you continue to have a blessed weekday, and a weekend as well. I don't really have sweaty hands. I also have a light grip on my controller as well. So, may I ask. Why did you go back to that small controller? It feels like a toy under my hands, and I hate it. The Game-stop one doesn't only a bigger, and better feel, but the Z button Is easier to push, and feel that you (actually pushed it) My friends use that small controller, and laugh when I use that big controller. They stop laughing when they get *****;) BIG CONTROLLERS FOR THE WIN<3

Be blessed all~
