What games did you find underwhelming?

Have you ever had a situation in which a game caught your interest, and then when you went to check out the reviews they all had some really good things to say? So in that case, many of us would probably decide to either buy the game or borrow it from your friend but once you've popped it in and finished it you felt underwhelmed by it?

Not really a case of "I thought it would be better" but more of a case of "well that was nice, I'm gonna go play something else now."

I'd have to say for me it a good example would be the 2008 Prince of Persia. The game got a number of insanely good reviews praising it for a whole lot of things. So I decided to pick up a used copy for a pretty low price and by the time I had beaten the big bad I kind of felt exactly as I described above. Actually, the only parts of that game I clearly remember were the terrible ending and all of the scenery porn.

So how about you guys? Has something similar every happened to you?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It was the most hyped and dissapointing video game which I've ever bought. Almost everything (the overall campaign and multi-player experience) was better in the previous instalment.

I'm not saying that MW2 is bad, just that CoD4 was better.

Final Fantasy XIII. It's not a terrible game, but it didn't live up to my expectations for it.

The game looked beautiful, but I wish there were towns to explore. I play a lot of RPGs that involve dungeon crawling and the likes in the past, but the dungeons weren't that fun in this game. Considering how the game was laid out, I felt like I just wanted to get from point A to point B after every chapter. Searching every nook and cranny wasn't that fun since whenever I did find a secret area in a dungeon, it wasn't anything too rewarding.

Also, I didn't find the story to be all too engaging for me.

Brawl and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Wii) for me. Force Unleashed was particularly boring to me and lightsaber combat, although hyped up, proved to be sub-par in that flailing the Wiimote around could let you beat the game.

COD4 and GTA4. Just...didn't like them, and for all the hype, I definitely wasn't feeling it.

That wasn't underwhelming it was just terrible.
I'd have to disagree, Brawl was actually pretty good.

Oh wait, it isn't competitive so obviously that means you should ignore everything good in the game and say it's the worst thing since WWII just because you can't bring it to a high level of play.

I agree with Black Waltz on Force Unleashed, I played the PS3 version and even that wasn't particularly impressive.

I got the feeling playing Galaxy 2. Not a bad game, I liked the first much better, though...and The Force Unleashed (360 version). I was so pumped for that, then when I got it I realized all the levels were just going through using the same moves. It got boring REAL quick

I liked Galaxy2, but I never played the first, so maybe that is why (@105 stars)

Force Unleashed was cool too, but then again I had nothing to compare it too.

FFXIII for me. That game had so much hype to have so much fail, but it wasn't really a bad game. It had an amazing story, but it's a perfect example that storyline doesn't go before gameplay. (And the gameplay was okay, but linear rpg is never a good thing, it almost contradicts itself)

Now that I think about it, I Brawled last night. It was fun with my friend, I threw a beam sword, he reflected with Fox's reflect and went to up smash me and I reflected it back when Falcos reflector into his face and won. Woot.

Red Steel and Soul Calibur IV. Red Steel sounded cool, even the commercial was cool, but the game wasn't. Soul Calibur IV started out cool to me, even the Star Wars character, but after a few months, it got old to me, despite me loving swords so much.

That sums up every Soul Calibur in general, except II. Red Steel sucked, was II any good?

My ego...It's OVER 9000!
Mario Kart Wii.

Holy **** I have never gotten so angry over a game. The online, blue shells, grand prix AI, blue shells, hackers, blue shells, stun time, blue shells, and unintended shortcuts were ALWAYS pissing me off.

SEGA All-Stars Racing thankfully gave me a break by being a FAIR kart racer. Beat Mario at his own game. :sonic:

Soul Calibur IV.
I agree with you here. I'm a pretty big SC fan (been playing since the first... er, well, second one of the Dreamcast) and when I picked up SCIV... well, sure it was more balanced and played better than SCIII but I can't help but feel that in other than those two categories it felt like a step backward. That and the story mode was lame, I didn't like the how your armor makes your characters better and I didn't like how serious the game felt.

Yeah, it was one big "meh" for me. I think I gave it a 6/10 on my GameFAQs review.

I've played Mario Kart Wii only once at a party, it was pretty fun but I really don't know the game so I really can't say much. But on a side note, Sega-All Stars Racing = win.

Left 4 Dead one and two. They didn't do anything for me. Also the first Rachet and Clank on the PS3 should have been better. Second made up for it though.
I expected Super Paper Mario to be better, but I still found it fun.

Mario Kart Wii was more than an underwhelming game. It was downright horrible.

Super Mario Galaxy 2. Fun game that I could play over and over again, but something was just...missing from the game.

Brawl is a great game, but for some reason that also had a very empty "Now what" feeling after beating the single player stuff. That is only worse when you add on wifi...

Other than barlw...

I'd say cod mw2. I didn't get an xbox until late 08 so I waited until 09 to see what the cod hype was all about. I gave it about 2-3 months since I hadn't played cod much before other than a bit of the first and fourth ones, but in the end I felt it was just too shallow and rewarded camping way too heavily. Most overrated franchise ever imo. I'm more of a gears of war kinda guy

I'd also have to say bionic commando next gen. BC Rearmed was one of my favorite games and the multiplayer demo got me hyped but the BC sequel was too linear, repetitive, and
they didn't delve deep enough into super joe's betrayal. It was an osh*t moment when it happened but they kinda just left it at that.

This man this.

I popped in SMG2 in my Wii and... I dunno, the levels... something felt like it was missing.

To me it's probably the same theme used again. I mean, seeing other planets for the second time got boring to me maybe? I dunno, I can't put my finger on it, but I also thought that something was missing. I felt much more SMG1 to tell the truth.

I never finished the game till this week because I got bored.

I wouldn't say that the game is worth a 10/10. Perhaps a 8 or 9/10, but not a perfect score.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot to say Brawl. That game was fine in its own way, but I wanted Melee's sequel to be similar to Melee for technicality. Brawl had too many restrictions on the things that were in 64 and Melee which made me not enjoy it all too much.

The Legend Of Zelda series, (except Twilight Princess though despite others finding it underwhelming), Street Fighter series, and Tekken series. I don't know why I don't like them, I guess I'm an odd card.

-Mario Kart Wii (only thing I truly liked about it was the music)

-the LoZ games (I can see why other people like them, but they seem a bit . . . . on the slow side for me, maybe I just need to play them more since I loved the boss fights and music)

- Kirby Super Star Ultra (It's personally one of my favorite Kirby games music, story, and powerup-wise, but it's way too short even with the add-ons. The boss rush was actually one of the easier ones in the series also, I was expecting it to be a lot harder like I heard everyone talking about. [*cough*hardest one is KDL2's imo*cough*]),

-Sonic Spinball (pretty good, but it takes WAY too long to get through the stages, and the songs tend to be a bit repetitive considering how long you a stock can last.), and

-the Street Fighter games (I like the complexity, but it just feels a bit repetitive and overly defensive, no offense to SF fans).

Now I'd never get rid of any of these, but they just didn't "wow" me as much as I thought they would.

I have to agree with everyone saying Street Fighter here. I own Street Fighter IV and it's a really good game but I never really got what the big deal was.

Maybe it's just because I didn't play SFII at the time of its initial release.

No, I play Melee competitively. It just bugs me how people claim it's the worst thing in the world just because it doesn't do what you want it to.

It's like saying a frying pan is terrible because you can't slice bread with it.

Let's drop this before it goes any farther, though.

But the intention of a frying pan isn't to cut bread in the first place. Brawl was simply underwhelming/terrible because it was a lack luster fighting game that was all glitter and shine without any real substance.

Well, I really like the Street Fighter series, but I really didn't like IV.

SFIV had some gameplay mechanics which kind of bug me. I didn't like Ultras and I felt comboing/inputs were way too lenient so newer players could get in (this goes for most fighting games recently it seems like).
So I don't enjoy it nearly as much as II, III, and Alpha.

So yeah, I'd add SFIV on my list for underwhelming games.

The Conduit. Even sucked for me more because I was hyping it up like the end of the world was tomorrow. Conduit 2 looks interesting, but I'm being cautious about that one. It does looked improved though, and thank God they removed those horrible gun sounds from the first game.

I have a feeling the Multiplayer component of Medal of Honor might underwhelm me, but the Singleplayer looks awesome.

Call of Duty: World at War. Same old, same old. Still haven't forgiven them for Call of Duty 3 either. Black Ops better be decent.

Left 4 Dead 2, the game was way too easy for me, i basically just had to run around with a machete and kill everything TT~TT
Final Fantasy XIII, I mean I loved the gameplay, its just that . . . it was missing something
And Brawl, I mean it's a really cool party game, with loads of extras and stuff, but. . . I was hoping for a game more on the competitive level

CoD: Modern Warfare 2: The hype was to much for the game to live up to IMO and that's what killed it for me

Halo 3: I never got into the hype so when I played it I was underwhelmed by it. I didn't think it was anything special. It's fun once in a while but I still prefer Halo 1 on the PC.

SSBB: It's a fun game, but there was no way Brawl could live up to it's 2 year hype. It's still fun to play with friends, but the speed of the game, floatiness, and single player left me underwhelmed by it. Still a fun game, but I still prefer Melee.

Sonic Dark Chronicles: I was so disappointed by the game. The battle system was cool, but the lame enemies and ending killed it. Overall it felt like it was missing something.

I think we all were. I just accepted it and got over it. Oh well, there's always SSB4.

Final Fantasy VII was another game that I'd add to my list of underwhelming games. I heard so much good stuff about it for years (didn't get a chance to play it when it first came out) but I wasn't able to get a hold of it because nobody I knew who owned it was willing to let go of it and I couldn't find a reasonably priced copy. Then my cousin who didn't play it anymore gave me his copy and... I get a bunch of forgettable characters, terrible plot structure but some pretty decent game play. Was it a bad game? No, but I just didn't find it to be anything special.

Halo 3: I never got into the hype so when I played it I was underwhelmed by it. I didn't think it was anything special. It's fun once in a while but I still prefer Halo 1 on the PC.

SFIV. So much hype, and so much letdown. I also don't get why you build super meter when you get hit. No fighting game should reward you for getting hit.

Also, I don't know why people hate on FFXIII for being so linear. Pretty much all JRPGs are notoriously linear. Deal with it, and play Fallout or something. :ohwell:

Yeah, and Melee wasn't supposed to be a competitive fighter. How do you not realize this when the whole competitive scene is based off of banning most of the game mechanics and exploiting glitches?

Brawl is more was Sakurai was trying to do with every game.

They play differently and different people prefer either the unique playstyle of 64, Melee, OR Brawl, (or all three) can we leave it at that?

Another underwhelming game? Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. One of the largest hyped Metroid games ever had the empty feeling too. It was just boring, and I was very disappointed with the story. Hypermode all the time was a neat concept, but when you needed it for everything, it got ridiculous, especially on Hypermode. Could say the same about Fusion. Looked cool, but way too linear gameplay for me...
