What’s an “impossible” idea for a platform fighter you like?

Either by its gameplay concept, licensing, being too broad, or some combination of these or other factors.

I think a general Video Game All-Stars/Celebration of Gaming History one would be cool, but it’s an example of licensing being an issue. Same perhaps with a variant of this being characters representing different video game styles, either with the actual characters or pastiches, much like the fangame Super Clash Bros. But that might be too ambitious for its own good, and of course, inherently unbalanced. Plus said fan game only has one developer, hence why it’s taking so long even more so.

A general “Pop Culture Clash” roster with comics, cartoons, anime/manga, movies, TV, books, video games, and other media would be cool, but again, licensing. Fortnite gets close, but in a different genre, and mainly with just skins and other limitations to it. LEGO Dimensions also flopped. And again, the “mass crossover of everything” has become a bit overdone and massively corporatized.

Any other thoughts or ideas? I’d be interested to see!

Sonic Vs. Mega Man.

Not possible, because the only reason for the last time they fought was because Archie (who Sega later cut ties with) happened to own the comic rights to both and the writer wanted to make it happen. That's a once-in-a-blue-moon type deal, like the Kingdom Hearts elevator exchange. I don't think there's any real reason Sega would want to make a crossover fighter right now, and if they did, it would either be just with Sonic or more of a Battle of AGES thing.

However, if it did happen, the roster would be awesome. Might make one soon.

Honestly? An Image Comics fighting game of, like, almost any kind. I think this is probably in a weird gray area in that I don't think it'd be impossible, but given all Image characters are creator-owned, it might be a bit of a headache getting everyone on board, especially since there might be some other licensing issues with other characters/franchises that've had involvement with other publishers (Kick-Ass springs to mind, originally being a Marvel publication before moving to Image.)

Even so, I still think it'd go so incredibly hard to see some of Image's most iconic characters go head to head. Even if Spawn would trounce all of them.

Star Hill. Why do you ask?
i had 2 ideas
Disney vs Warner bros platform fighter
Warner bros made Multiversus and sora is in smash so what if we get we get platform between these 2 companies in 1 game seems like licensing nightmare but would be worth it
Another idea is Pokémon vs Digimon platform fighter
Digimon already has a platform fighter which is Digimon rumble arena and many Pokémons are already in smash so I do think a crossover between these 2 franchise would be crazy as they never crossover before

A Movie platform fighter

While Smash is a Video Game platform fighter,it came an idea of a Super Smash Bros with movie characters,in my head it could be cool a fighting game of Godzilla VS Jason Voorhees VS John Wick VS Darth Vader on a Matrix stage

A general Console Wars game (remember we had a creates thread for one). Smash is great but will always lean on the Nintendo side. Think wed be lucky to get 1 Sony rep let alone bringing in multiple iconic characters. Plus there are other areas like pc gaming in particular that feel like they could be in the same boat.

Nintendo vs etheir Shonen Jump, Disney, Nick, or Wanner Bros

Sadly this is impossible to happen but Imagine Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby going up against stuff like Spongebob, Mickey Mouse, Goku, or Bugs Bunny just because their not allowed to be in Smash doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to be crossed over elsewhere

Pokémon having its own platform fighter.

I mainly think it’s impossible because I’m sure Game Freak is content with having its Smash representation but I do think there’s a lot of potential for the series to have its own platform fighter. I’ve started a thread of that idea where I started to flesh out a ton of fighter movesets.

EDIT: In retrospect, I should’ve made this thread in this hub

a Public Domain platform fighter

that is probably very easy, and different of having a Platform Fighter with companies of different medias as video games, movies, cartoons and etc, it could be Public Domain-themed

For those with Hololive knowledge, I did movesets (general description of playstyle and detailed descriptions of specials/finishers) mainly for the girls up to Advent, working on ones for ReGLOSS Justice. Been working on this since like 2022 so I have a few movesets for those who graduated, not terminated outside of Mel Yozora, though some I made before they left. Not sure if I’m gonna share every moveset here but if anyone wants me to post what I have for some of the girls, lemme know and I’ll put them in a spoiler tag to keep them from taking too much space.

If you're that deep into the concept I feel like that might warrant it's own thread tbh

Bumping to share a silly idea I had a while ago.

Ever since Garfield got into the NASB games, and vising Toon Lagoon at Universal with my comic strip loving Dad, I've been considering the idea of a platform fighter entirely starring newspaper comic strip characters.

Working title is something like Sunday Morning Showdown. Characters would include Snoopy, Garfield (if Nick is okay with him being in two plat fighters), Popeye, Hagar the Horrible, Prince Valiant, Spaceman Spiff from Calvin and Hobbes (hence the "impossible" part in the title), Nancy, Rosa from Rosebuds, Sarge from Beetle Bailey, and whoever else. The game's art style is 2D animated, and all the stages have the out of bounds section represented by the white borders of the strip panels.

I enjoy this, it’s a very fun, niche idea. My additions might be Flash Gordon, Cutter John (Bloom County), Pogo, Huey Freeman (The Boondocks), **** Tracy, a Far Side cow…granted, some of these are perhaps from too politically oriented strips?

Honestly…I think a Capcom crossover game where it's all just Capcom characters but as a platform-fighter would be awesome.

A few days ago I was having a discussion with someone on the profile posts about consitutes a "comic" and how that would apply to Marvel Secret Wars - resulting in dumb hypothetical scenarios about the darling pet monkey advert, mean-spirited Smash speculation fan comics, cartoon storyboards, and the This is Fine dog - and it did kinda make me entertain the idea of an "everything but superheroes" comic crossover.

Day one Garbage Ape main.

A Videospiel-Man (my own series) plattfighter!
Its impossible cause i cant devolop and people are easily annoyed by me!
But im just saying the roster would be great!
From diffrent versions of videospiel-man, other gameheroes, robos and villain the moveset potential is of the charts!
Also tons of potential for costumes and stages!

Also makes perfect sense cause the original game idea for vsm was a plattformer and theres tons of fighting in the comic!

Personally, my feet would detatch from my legs if a Playhouse Disney fighting game were made. Yes, I know about the ethical problems with that demographic, but that block always makes me smile.

Heck, now that the PBS Kids fighting game thread has finished, something has to fill its niche to keep the momentum going. Even if I'm not the creator.

The problem with a sega platform fighter is that sega has like 3 or 4 ip's with any mainstream recognition, so it would be incredibly niche. Also it would require sega to do something good, so it would never happen. But I would be absolutely flip if I could play as Joe Musashi- sega has such a golden backlog of characters that never get to shine. My absolute favorite obscure sega character that would never happen in this game that would never happen is Jamm from Golden Axe: The Duel. She's my favorite gobber gobby goo.

I'd really like a one piece one. That one is distinctly more possible, there have been several one piece fighting games, it's just that it could never do the cast justice considering there are exactly five-thousand character who I want in and also it would be a licensed fighting game, and as far as I know Dragon Ball FighterZ was produced via some sort of faustian bargain.

This makes me think of the old comic I saw that did a UMVC3 type game but with Nick Jr. VS PBS Kids, which would be funny.
