How about this?

512 x 302

in your head quick!

2 x 2 = 4
1 x 2 + 0 x 2 = 2
5 x 2 + 2 x 3 + 1 x 0 = 16
1 x 3 + 5 x 0 = 3 + 1 = 4
5 x 3 = 15

== 154,624

This method works for any two 3 digit numbers multiplied together and it works like this:

abc x def

c x f = last digit
b x f + c x e = 2nd last digit
a x f + b x e + c x d = 3rd last digit
b x d + a x e = 4th last digit
a x d = 1st digit

carry over the 1 when needed ;) Notice that each number is multiplied 3 times throughout the whole thing

How about an interesting way to square numbers from 100-109 (it works for 110 and higher but i forget how)

lets say 107.

107-100 = 7 (obviously).
7² = 49
107 + 7 = 114
so 107² = 11,449

lets see if i can remember for above 110.

117

17² = 289
117 + 17 = 134 + 2 = 136
so 117² = 13,689

The best one is Square Root without calculator:

Sqrt 5.

pick a number that you think its close to... lets say 2.
5/2 = 2.5
2.5+2 = 4.5
4.5/2 = 2.25
5/2.25 = 2.2222
2.2222+2.25 = 4.47222
4.47222/2 = 2.23611

and keep going for more accuracy ;D

Ok Sam. If you think your so good.
How bout some logs.
Use the substitution y = 2^x to solve each of the following equations giving your answer in exact form involving logarithms to the base ten.
(2^x)^2 + 3(2^x) - 18 =0
I'll give you the answer after you try figuring it out.
I got the question from my math specialist book. My dad and I were trying to figure this one out for ages earlier. We gave up after we tried using the quadratic equation. ><

Welcome ladies (lol not likely) and gentlemen to Math Mania, I'm your host Bowser and tonight as always we'll be putting the people of Perth's eductaion on the line, Tonights first question:

A 'snooker' table (measuring 8 metres by 4m) with 4 'pockets' (measuring 0.5m and placed at diagonal slants in all 4 corners) contains 10 balls (each with a diameter of 0.25m) placed at the following coords:

2m,1m...(white ball)
...and red balls...
1m,5m... 2m,5m... 3m,5m
1m,6m... 2m,6m... 3m,6m
1m,7m... 2m,7m... 3m,7m

The white ball is then shot at a particular angle from 0 to 360 degrees (0 being north, and going clockwise).
Just to make it clear, a ball is 'potted' if at least half of the ball is in area of the 'pocket'

Assuming the balls travel indefinitely (i.e. no loss of energy via friction, air resistance or collisions), answer the following:

a: What exact angle/s should you choose to ensure that all the balls are potted the quickest?
b: What is the minimum amount of contacts the balls can make with each other before they are all knocked in?
c: Same as b, except that each ball - just before it is knocked in - must not have hit the white ball on its previous contact (must be a red instead of course).
d: What proportion of angles will leave the white ball the last on the table to be potted?

Lol gnasch we must have the same book.

Ok heres I did it lol. dont have my specialist book right now so tell me if im right.

(2^x)^2 + 3(2^x) - 18 =0

y^2+3y-18=0

(y+6)(y-3)=0
so y=3 cause u cant get a negetive from indices.

log(2^x)=log3
xlog2=log3
x=log3/log2

i think thats right lol

:)

lol lord bowser
tl;dr sorry :(

yeah, but dont worry corpse I did it lol.
Anyway gnasch ive been feeling like that in specialist all the time :( id stuff up a test and then get back the results, once I knew how to do them it just seemed so easy lol :)

lol lets have a maths tourney at the next tourney

lord bowser i read it but i cant be bothered lol.

Now you can try one of my questions:

decide whether the series converges or diverges. Give a reason for your decision.

sum of x=1 to infinity of lnx / x^3

ln is natural logarithm. basically its log with base 'e'. e is a number which is something like 2.7188...

heres the solution:

f'(x) = lnx / x^3
f ' (x) = (x^3*1/x-lnx*3x^2) / x^6 = (x^2(1-3lnx)) / x^6
so f ' (x) < 0 for all x >= 2, so the sequence is decreasing.

Now we integrate lnx / x^3 --> let u = lnx, dv = 1/x^3
therefore du = dx / x and v = -1 / 2x^2
F(x) = lnx / 2x^2 - int (-1/2x^2)
F(x) = (-lnx / 2x^2) - 1 / 4x^2
Now we substitute ∞ and 1 for x

(-ln∞ / 2∞^2) - (1 / 4∞^2 + 1/4)
= (-ln∞ / 2∞^2)
type ∞ / ∞
use Lhopitals rule, gives (-1/x) / (4x)
substitute x = ∞ again gives 0.
0+1/4 = 1/4.
1/4 != ∞ so the series converges by the integral test.

I've always been good at maths. Just recently I had an assignment due in a class and I hadnt gone to any of the lectures where they taught the info needed for the assignment. The assignment was due on 15th of May. On 13th of May I learnt 5 Lectures worth of info from the online lecture notes (about 20 hours worth of consistant learning), I did the assignment from beginning to end on the 14th of May. I got my mark back, I got the highest of a class of 77 and my mark was... 100% :)

My main problem is that I'm lazy :p

All this maths is actually making me want to do maths...It's scary.
Anyway I believe Travis just proposed the hardest question all night. Personally I'd go Vodka since I once went through a phase of drinking Jim Beam for every party I went to, but really depends if you want it straight or mixed.
Staight - Vodka
Mixed - Bourbon

Lets not, I play this game to get away from school.

Me and my mate were talking about what drinks to buy for my party friday and we had different opinions so I'd like to hear yours. Bourbon or vodka?
you can generally get vodka for cheaper, that being said im more of a bourbon person. if youre doing shots and just want to get really drunk then buy vodka. spend less. i like bourbon for the flavour.

i'm gonna ask about a tourny at my place. hopefully i can get my parents approval. im gonna dicsuss the possibillity of doing this and a potential date for my next tourny. Yes i still plan on having tournaments at my place.

Ummm well Pete, the thing is... I didn't.
I didn't study at all for the physics exam cause I'm dropping it anyway.
Bah, worthless. You people act like its necessary to study, rather than just be awesome and memorize it all the first time 'round. Besides, you've got access to the only person in the year who's any good at quantum and you don't ask for any help. W2G :p.

Muzga, don't you live up in Marangaroo or some place in woopwoop like that?

Pete, I did ask you but you were like, "No, ask someone else." =/ I cried a little.

Well, last night I watched Terminator Salvation. When I got home, I was asked "how was it?" and well... I didn't know how to respond lol. I don't know what I think of it, although that may be because I didn't sleep very well at all the day before.

Bob, have you seen it yet? I remember you saying at a tournament that you wanted to see it.

Good luck Sam though I doubt you'llneed it. Marangaroo isnt actually that far away either.

EDIT:So would you recommend it? If theres alot of action I'm sure Bob will like it, I remember him saying he's been waiting for a movie when they are actually in the war

No it was just that particular question I think. Finding half life and stuff is easy :p
Yeah, Ther's always a copy of it at EB, failing that you can get it from Steam. :)

Yeah I'd recommend it, I reackon most people will like it (I'm not saying I don't like it).

They're making another one btw. :dizzy: :laugh: :confused: ;) :chuckle: :psycho: :p :) :bee: :p :urg: :lick: :ohwell:
they are? Well
that explains why they let him survive when we know from the previous that he dies

Can't help but also think that
making a terminator with a human heart was a bit strange?
I
can sort of understand using a human brain, but why they heart? Mechanical hearts would be
super
ior, especially since I doubt it's blood running th
rough
his pipes anyway. Not to mention it's just a giant weak point (for massive damage)
