Maybe this is a bad time to bring it up but I just got back from Detective Pikachu and while I loved it, it's story was terrible.
Their villain's motivation made zero sense. He should have been fleshed out more, even if just a little. Maybe give some explanation for why he's so crazy.
Add a scene that explains how overexposure to Serum R screwed with his head or something and boom, story fixed (for the most part, at least).
On a different note I'm like 99% sure that Serum R is a reference to the Berserk Gene from Gold/Silver and I love that.
I'm just glad Detective Pikachu didn't follow the source material to a tee. At least from what I've heard. I haven't played the game but from what I hear the story of the film was similar but not quite.
I feel like the movie would've been received far worse had it followed the games plot directly because it would've been "Unoriginal" and "Didn't take enough risks".
I mean, it wasn't that hard to understand. He believed Pokemon were physically superior and so he tried to turn all humans into Pokemon.
Weird? Yeah. Making no sense from a crazy old man's perspective? Not really.
"I'll help the human race by forcefully transforming them into Psyducks and Snubulls by surprise and against their will" isn't what I'd call a solid motivation, and it's the driving point for the movie's entire story.
Maybe I'm being harsh but I can't take a villain like that seriously, and I think the movie expect you to take him seriously.

Okay I can deal with some light political and religious discussion but this is just too much.
I can read your sacrasm and won't allow you to to oppress us Hawaiian pizza lovers any further.
Hot Take: There was never a decent Pokemon story-line in literally anything in the franchise, except for the Black & White games. In spite of that however, there are enough world-building elements and charm throughout the franchise to still make it enjoyable.
One day, I started coughing for no reason all year 'round for the last decade. I got my lungs checked multiple times for any possible signs of cancer, and nothing. The general consensus is that I'm allergic to something, but I think it's just life pounding me on the chest.
