RE4 fundamentally changed RE by a gameplay standpoint that is for some reason praised as wonderful specifically for RE4, but chided for RE5 and RE6.

In classic RE, every BOW you kill is a choice. You have X amount of resources at any time, so choosing where to go and what to kill versus what to avoid is the very basis of the game. There's a risk/reward factor that other games with guns typically lack that makes the game different.

RE4, by comparison, does not have that. There are no branching paths or risk/reward decisions. You simply walk forward to the next corridor or battle area, kill everything in it, and continue on; often those battle areas actually won't let you continue until you kill every last thing in it. You're not punished for expending ammo; you're rewarded for it with more ammo.

The opening scene where Los Ganados infinitely spawn and you're forced to run and hide, and the beginning of the hospital where you're unable to fight back against the Regenerators are the only parts of the game that uniquely translate oldschool RE into modern gameplay. The rest is just a shooter. Which is fine, but here's my issue: RE5 followed the exact same blueprint for its gameplay, but now it's suddenly "just a shooter" while RE4 is still praised as "horror". It's not. It's a shooter with a dark color pallet.

The co-op and the inventory are the only major changes to the formula, and they attempt to cancel each other out. Having real-time inventory management makes combat more stressful than RE4's pause-briefcase mechanic, but having a partner-- particularly a human partner-- relieves stress because you have someone to fall back on, much like a Gears of War game. Otherwise, RE5 is RE4 again. It's ridiculous, B-movie action camp trying to pretend it's horror, only RE5 offers you more options to kill and more ways to play. But Chris punching a boulder is ridiculed while Leon doing this:

isn't.

I'm not at all arguing RE5 is better (though my bias toward it probably shows). But the universal praise for one game and the universal 'meh' toward the other when they're the same ****ing game is what irritates me about RE4.
Speaking from my own personal experience I FAR prefer RE4 to RE5 and 6 because of the fact that the RE4 game is a seamless, continuous game from beginning to end. Where as RE5 and 6 are very much a shooter inspired and mission based structured. RE4: Oh ****! I forgot to pick up this item! Oh well, next playthrough I guess. RE5: lol i forgot an item in the first level and I'm in the 10th imma load that chapter. 4 has a focus on surviving till the next type writer. And overall has more interesting characters when it comes to Leon, Krauser, and Ada. Sadler, Salazar, and the rest of the ****ed up gonados crew.

By comparison in Resident Evil 5 you have Wesker... that's pretty much the only intriguing character. You got evil scientist lady Excella but she's so incredibly forgettable and throw away that I often forget she's even a part of the cast. Josh is alright and Jill is BARELY in it. I don't blame people for ragging on Chris AND Leon for doing absurd stunts in their games honestly but the set up for Chris punching a boulder compared to the set up of Leon backflipping lasers is not really comparable. Leon: "oh ****, lasers in this underground lab!" *backflips* Chris: "Oh **** my friend is stuck on the other side of this volcanic lava pit that is almost certainly hot enough to melt all of our skins off just from being near it! Better punch this boulder to push it in this lava so she can jump across back to me!" *Precedes to square up with boulder*

I dunno. I find some of the story beats in RE5 to be RATHER comical because of how serious it takes itself. RE4's is just as ludicrous and ridiculous as RE5's but it carries that sort of self aware humor that was found in Devil May Cry. RE5 and 6 are just WAY too serious for the story they're presenting.

I will say that that cheesy over serious approach to RE5 is part of the reason I adore that game though. It's a special kind of ridiculous. And I love it for that.

Resident Evil 6 is an absolute CLUSTER **** and I don't like that game. Don't feel like the story makes sense, characters are boring, plot is dumb, no self aware humor, not even that cool of action. RE6 is where Resident Evil lost its identity by far.

Resident Evil 4 in comparison to other Resident Evil games kind of standa on it's own. The set up of the game isn't a globetrotting adventure like 5 and 6 but it's not a contained to one building horror fare like 1 and 2. It's not a every bullet counts affair like earlier games but it's not a machine guns out blasting in the second level affair like 5 and 6. It kind of stands alone. It's unique. And I think that's what makes it so special.

It has its flaws but I think the direction they took with Resident Evil 2 Remake is a very apparent representation of how well that structure works and, with a bit more tweaking, can actually Assist in revitalizing the franchise with the oldschool flow.

Resident Evil 4 is great. An absolute masterpiece. Is it overrated? Absolutely. It hasn't aged perfectly. But it stands out not only among it's core series but also among games in general and that's a big accomplishment.

I did not expect my summer classes to be so tight in schedule. I got an exam, readings, and studying I have to do per week. PER WEEK. It is not as bad as it should be due to it being one class I gotta focus on for now, but still. Luckily, I am starting to get a hang of the scheduling and practicing focus tips to progress on my Smash writings.

Now that I think about it, we've always seen new evolutions introduced in even generations, haven't we? At first glance Gen 6 seems to have broken this trend, but mega evolutions are still evolutions.

I wonder if they'll go back to traditional evolutions, add new megas or break the trend altogether. It could see any of those three things happening.

And yes, I've heard the "armored evolutions" rumor and no I don't buy it in the slightest.

You see, considering Resident Evil has such unique gameplay and ridiculously over the top storylines, it just has to be in Smash!

No, really. If Dante doesn't get in (considering the timing of the DMC 1 port and the fact that ports have never resulted in characters getting added), sure Sakurai could go for the wacky unexpected pick of like, Amaterasu or Phoenix Wright. But I just can't help but feel that not adding Resident Evil kinda sorta maybe leaves a gaping hole in the "everyone is here!" aspect. That may be biased, as some folks might think Phoenix Wright or Amaterasu fit that better. But it just seems...different.

Like, the iconic designs, the genre defining gameplay, the fact that it's such a huge series in general...like, how could you not add Jill or Leon at this point? Especially after you give Joker a gun?

Leon especially would be a meme machine, just with his dodging, suplexes, and roundhouse kicks. I would prefer Jill, just because she's one of the most iconic female lead characters in gaming. It's not that Leon isn't iconic, but...I just feel like a female pick would be nice for a change, as shallow as that may seem.

No offense mate, but this is kinda 100% bias, since you could say "leaves a gaping hole in the everyone is here aspect!" for a lot of characters.

With it getting closer everyday, I want to talk about Animal Crossing, one of the most anticipated games of E3.

Mainly what do you want to see in the new AC game? Would you like for them to expand the abilities of being mayor or do you hope they focus on another gimmick for this game? What new mechanics and features do you want to see? What new type of animal Villagers do you want to see?

I think having a the ability to have an actual enclosed front and backyard would be really cool, especially since it would encourage gardening more. An ability to pass zoning laws would be nice, designated areas for housing while others for parks/nature.

Late on this:

Certainly, Sakurai has shown interest in playing western IP. He has written about several different games in his Famitsu column. However, he has relatively recently had to say that his columns do not necessarily relate to Smash, because anytime he has played a game there are fans who instantly assume there’s a connection. This in itself doesn’t mean he’d never add a western pick, but it simply shows there’s no connection between games he has played and their likelihood for showing up in Smash.
That wasn't my point. The reason I brought up those articles is because they show that Sakurai has experienced and values what western gaming has brought to the table. It shows that he understands why Minecraft is popular, it shows that Doom is a franchise he recognizes for its influence, and so on and so forth. That's similar to how he's responded to franchises like Castlevania and Street Fighter, franchises that carried the influence and recognizability, and that should be noted when talking about the possibility of western characters with similar influence.

In short, I'm not saying 'he played Undertale, Sans for Smash everyone!', I'm saying that he has recognized the strength of western Third Party IPs.

What I meant by “why now?”, I meant more...why does it suddenly seem inevitable that a Western IP is getting in when there are still Japanese IP that are just as valuable that could be added? You have Dark Souls, Tekken, Tales, Dragon Quest, Resident Evil, and a myriad of other options. Each of those supports Japanese developers that have been connected to Smash already, and there are still other Japanese devs, like Koei Tecmo, that have nothing. Adding a western pick doesn’t do this...not a single Japanese developer makes any sort of profit, monetary or simply by exposure, from a western character. This goes directly against the awards, and potential design philosophy, that Sakurai hasn’t displayed so far.
Firstly, while I can't speak for everyone, the argument we're having is not about proving that any western IPs are inevitable, we're arguing that they do have a fair shot that they're not being given credit for.

Secondly, just because there's a large number of Japanese IPs that Sakurai could go for doesn't mean that he will. As many Nintendo fans will gladly tell you, there are a number of Nintendo franchises like Rhythm Heaven still waiting in line for their chance to be added into Smash, yet they weren't given the nod. If Sakurai picks a western IP, it's not because he doesn't see the other Japanese IPs as unviable options, it's because the western IP gave enough reason to Sakurai to be interested in them and add them in.

Finally, again even if the endeavor is to further the influence of the Japanese gaming industry that doesn't mean it's lost with the addition of one character. Adding say, Doomguy to the roster alongside Ryu (Ninja Gaiden), Erdrick, Joker, and Jill is still going to show the great strengths of the Japanese industry. You'd have four massive Japanese icons duking it out with a bunch of other popular and notable characters from other Japanese IPs, that wouldn't change much with one western character being thrown into the mix. Plus, adding a western character alongside them in Smash would support the recent quote from Nintendo about expanding the influence of the game to those who haven't really played on a Nintendo system.

Adding Shovel Knight as an Assist Trophy, which comes packaged with the game and costs nothing extra, is not really the same thing as an independently sold Fighter that brings a stage, Spirits and music. What works for base roster doesn’t necessarily work for DLC
'

That still doesn't address my point, the argument over this started because of the assertion that a language barrier would serve as a potential means for keeping a western character out. Shovel Knight, despite being an AT, shows that at least on some level Sakurai is willing to open up communications with western developers to not only include him and accompanying Spirits, but also likely talk to them to make sure that he's implemented properly. I'm not arguing there's a different workload to an AT vs. a character, I'm arguing whether the point of the language barrier is really that strong if there's an example already that shows communication can exist despite it (and that's not getting into things like translators, regional branches of the company, or the like).

Eh, that's why I put that "this is biased" in there.

However, it can't be denied that the overall impact of Resident Evil, the overall profits of the series, and completely different genre all provide Resident Evil with a unique presence for a game like Smash.

Not to mention, the gameplay potential is...incredibly interesting. I just hope that if Jill, Leon, or Chris are added, they don't go for a totally gimmicky moveset that makes them unfun. Like, they could do something absolutely faithful to Resident Evil and give a sort of ammo-management/inventory management moveset, but that just doesn't necessarily sound fun.

It's cool how Leon is starting to become a popular choice here over time, I am kinda proud in a way.

I used to speculate Leon during base game Ultimate speculation, and now more people believe in his chances now.

Leon still makes sense to me. Resident Evil is one of the biggest, globally popular Japanese gaming franchises ever that has yet to receive a playable character in Smash.

I think both Leon and Jill would be great choices, both offer a little bit of everything. I would like if RE gets in Smash, the stage would be Raccoon City so that the other one that doesn't make it can get in later.

That would be nice features, I hope they expand the mayor role. Also would like some mechanic like bestie to have a villager stay in your town plus the ability to have roomates.

I'd be fine with that

Eeveeloutions are pretty much the only cross generational eveloutions I even care about.

Idk, a lot of the other ones just never held up compared to their original counterparts...
