It's always important to try and be understanding. Yes, this is a minor smash forum, its ultimately not super significant, but if only for the benefit of yourself it's good to be aware of why other people think the way they do. It's always good to try.
idk if many people here are capable of understanding others seeing how a person who was ok at first suddenly snaps and no onr thinks "Is he ok, what made him snap" and instantly think "What an asshole"

Just to play Devil's Advocate, Not everyone that has that stupid views are shtright up 100% racist homophobic blah blah people. Yes some people are those deep down to theor soul but some people are just ignorent, and with enough help and digging deep down into their brain to understand them, you may, note MAY. correct it. Do you take a animal to the pound right away when it starts acting up or do you try to understand why its acting up?

If that was the case, I would of giving my rabbit that thumped daily everyday and everynight to SPCA without knowing she was actually in heat and needed to be spayed
but unlike a pet owner, it isn't our responsibility to take care of these people

sure there's a small chance that they might be changed but be honest is it really worth the time and headache when there's a 99% chance that they'll just go back to being huge douchebags

This conversation just makes me feel glad about things going better for my family, my friends and I than in 2018 and February.

I always wanted to show the kind person people know me as IRL, but I just couldn´t at first because of the stuff I had to dealt with alongside my relatives that messed with our minds in bad ways.

But thankfully, all of that is over and things are going as good as they used to be. Now my job is to keep this track as strong as possible.

You wanna know how we prove them right?

We ostracize them.

Suddenly the world is their enemy and everything they've been spouting has been proven true.

Does that rhetoric sound familiar? I've heard it countless times. Too many times to count.

This is a self perpetuating cycle. It's only gonna get worse.

Is curing one bigot not worth it?

No one is saying that we're accepting the behavior. No one is saying we agree with it.

But if you don't try to talk to people and keep at it, then they never will change. I think murder is a whole lot worse then what he spouted. Should I give up on every murderer out there? I don't like giving up on people.
Mmmmm..... sounds like someone just got hard banned recently. Who and what were they saying?

*shrug* If I notice they arent acting the way they were before, Id ask whats wrong.

most of the time, peeps who act like that are just unhappy with themselves

If someone is causing trouble and claims that they do due to personal stuff, the best thing for them would be to make a general recovery of many things instead of joining debates on the internet, if you ask me.

I basically decided to do that during February, and when I returned with a bit more strenght I started behaving better at last.

Taking breaks helps a lot.

You were talking about how it is wrong to ban people even if they have bad opinion as it causes more divide. I like to know who was banned and what were they saying.

Or no one was banned and you are just talking in theory.
We are talking about something that happened years ago.

My problem with trying to cure people is there's no guarantee that they'll see the wrong of their ways but they'll definitely make other users feel unsafe.

I agree that permaban should be a last resort but I don't think it should be allowed for users to keep vocally hating other people, especially if they are adults.

honestly no it kinda isn't

these kinds of awful things do leave a lasting impact on people, and yeah yeah thick skin and all that but it's undeniable that it offends people and this is a family friendly forum where you don't want people to be shunned away by awful comments and the like

like yeah there's an off chance you'll help someone but it just isn't worth the heart and head aches that come with it

like i get that nobody is accepting it but we're doing nothing but perpetuate the issue by (somewhat) allowing it

and honestly no being banned from a smash bros discussiom forum does not prove bigots right, like, at all

Also, if the user gets online just to meet with specific users, the best option in that case would just be to enter PMs and nothing else normally.

That way they can treat the problem in a more balanced way and without involving other people online.

yeah and that's cool and all but being unhappy with yourself doesn't excuse being a total asshole

i've wanted to kill myself for like the past 6 years and still to this day but that doesn't mean that i can be a total **** to everyone

also again there's not that large a chance that asking them what's wrong will actually change them at all

And if they really want to talk with someone, the best thing would be to do so at PMs instead of open threads.

He wasn't an adult actually. Wasn't even 15.

And look, for anyone doubting what I'm saying...

https://www.vox.com/identities/2016/11/15/13595508/racism-research-study-trump

It’s the direct opposite of the kind of culture the internet has fostered — typically focused on calling out racists and shaming them in public. This doesn’t work. And as much as it might seem like a lost cause to understand the perspectives of people who may qualify as racist, understanding where they come from is a needed step to being able to speak to them in a way that will help reduce the racial biases they hold.
“Telling people they’re racist, sexist, and xenophobic is going to get you exactly nowhere,” said Alana Conner, executive director of Stanford University’s Social Psychological Answers to Real-World Questions Center. “It’s such a threatening message. One of the things we know from social psychology is when people feel threatened, they can’t change, they can’t listen.”
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mind-in-the-machine/201809/understanding-the-racist-brain
Through exposure to new stimuli, new synaptic connections can be formed, creating neural pathways that can promote a restructuring of old and rigid belief systems.
https://www.sbs.com.au/topics/life/family/article/2016/07/14/how-prevent-your-kids-becoming-racist
However, these exercises and discussions don’t need to be awkward or contrived. Dr Walton emphasised the importance of creating an “open” environment where children feel comfortable bringing up their experiences with or feelings surrounding racial bias.

“So not shutting conversations down when they come up, but exploring with children what they understand and how they might be able to think about the issue differently. This can mean asking them questions to understand where the children are coming from,” said Dr Walton.

“For example, if they’ve heard something on television or at school. Rather than just saying ‘don’t be racist’, explore with the children what they think racism is or why they said what they did and try to help them take a different perspective.”
It isn't just namby pamby good feels "oh no I'm afraid to hurt people" crap.

This has been rooted in science for a long time.

I'm not saying we never ban people like that. But if we don't try to fix the problem first, then we just make it worse.

Look at it this way, we're all a bunch of students and the site staff is the administration and teachers. A kid does something really bad right? Unless the action is horrendous, its never expulsion first. You'd all look a little confused if a school just gave up on kids, wouldn't you?

Thing is, I believe that everyone has the power to change. When I came out as pansexual and gender fluid, a ton of people in my school went really weird about it, but there was one kid who used to be a real bigot, who actually stopped when I told him. He got really apologetic about it, and ever since has been part of the anti-discrimination movement I set up. To this day, we happen to be really good friends. The thing is, everyone deserves a chance, because everyone has the potential to be a better person.

Man, go on the Youtube equivalent of a Wiki Walk and it all kicks off.

Not that I'm judging character pics, but keep in mind I'd be drawing the nominee characters and the winner will get a picture of their four tributes. So I'd give serious thought to meme or joke characters.
Alrighty, here we go

1. Prince Charming (Shrek 2)
2. Weird Al Yankovic
3. Pancake Bunny (Wreck-it Ralph 2)
4. Spider-Man
KMDP KMDP I shall also give my hypothetical nominations, since I've been less active and there's a good chance I won't be around.

  1. Aisaka Taiga
  2. Alejandro (Total Drama)
  3. Spike (My Little Pony)
  4. Amazon Pandora
I'll put 'em on the list.
Hold on. He has ground rules for this one:
Thanks Zinith
me, @Cool Typlosion, the state of Pennsylvania, and Moe

EDIT: With the rules, replace me with Marx, @Cool Typhlosion with a regular Typhlosion, and Pennsylvania with Peridot.
Who is "Moe" in this list? Moe Syszlak? Moe the Clown from Ace Attorney?
----------------------------------------
Unfortunately, Guh-Huzzah! Guh-Huzzah! , @Taylor F and TheMightyP TheMightyP , I'm afraid I've already gotten 12 Districts worth of nominations, unless I were to remove myself.
----------------------------------------
Okay, with 12 Districts filled, they are as follows.
District 1 (me) - TBD
District 2 ( Zinith Zinith ) - Yoshi, Boshi, Sobble, Riptor
District 3 ( @JDCabrera ) - Coco Bandicoot, Samus Aran, Susan Storm, Jet Jaguar
District 4 ( Gentlepanda Gentlepanda ) - Edea, Jane, Agnes, Miku
District 5 ( Opossum Opossum ) - Lena, Julian, Palla, Merric
District 6 ( KarneraMythos KarneraMythos ) - Phosphophyllite, Jack Frost (SMT), Captain Padraig, Eustace Bagge
District 7 ( mbvswb mbvswb ) - Geno, Phoenix Wright, Goro Akechi, Mipha

Nobody's going to change their view point because of random people. Come on, let's be real here. The anonymity means the human connection is lost. Absolutely nobody goes online and will have their world changed by the Internet (Well, not in a good way, anyway)

In real life? Possibly, but as an online forum we can't influence that path, and sometimes people are just here at the wrong time in their lives.

I get what you’re saying, but this forum is more of a collection of 15-20 actual posters tops, so it gives each individual poster a bit more humanity. On the other hand, this is an online forum.

I thought gay people were evil when I first started talking to people online.

My community has very little openly gay people and no one I actively talked to.

But I talked to, made friends with and eventually came to respect LGBT people through my time online.

Am I just an anomaly?
