@ tkilla: just watched the first match

0:09 - as soon as you see mk retreating, chase after him to punish. chasing him would also move you away from the edge

0:39 - try to whistle on reaction to the opponent. just jumping up and whistling will allow them to hit you when the whistle is done

2:35 -don't spam grab that much :/ it becomes very predictable. mix it up with fsmashes, walk around, etc

you also used dair a lot when you were in the air; don't do it everytime or you'll get read and puished

whistle everything D: especially those pesky tornados and shuttle loops

So I finally got around to recording these videos so I decided I should post 'em. Sorry about the terrible quality, my camera sucks and I have no stand. Anyways, this are some of my first fights using Olimar so I know i'm not really good. I look forward to using him in a upcoming tournament though so I want to improve. Don't be to harsh please :D.

I watched a bit of the TL one as well.

You need to SH your Pikmin Throws more, and you need to keep more constant pikmin pressure on him. A lot of times you'd throw some pikmin, then walk around a bit, then throw some more, then pluck some and walk around a bit, then throw, etc. Work on fitting plucks and spacing amongst a constant rain of pikmin upon your opponent.

Also, sit in your shield less. This kind of goes along with the last tip. You nearly always want to be moving as Olimar - it makes you harder to hit and it keeps people out of your personal bubble (which is the last place you want a person).

I'll try to watch this later tonight, my day's kinda booked solid atm

SH pikmin-toss is an awful habit. And he walks? ****, I want to watch these vids then.

Also... vs TL shield is good, not so much in other match-ups...

...

sorry to contradict everything you just said vocal XD

*goes to watch vids*

EDIT: O_O WOOOOOW

this is the type of olimar I need to play more like, haha. my only advice is your reaction time is balls and you need to learn fast/aggressive options.

What I meant was he sat in his shield even when stuff wasn't flying at him; if there's bombs/arrows then by all means feel free to shield.

And just what makes SHPT such a bad habit? I recognize that you have to vary your throwing habits, but this is one of the safest variations; it compromises between the safety of staying grounded with a short range and the danger of FH with a large range

Watch a vid of an olimar vs another high level player and count the times they take damage because they SH pikmin toss.

Anytime Olimar leaves the ground he make himself incredibly vulnerable.

I still feel like you can anticipate the incoming attack, but I'll watch some vids

Well definitely not what I was expecting, I suspect /trolling :p.

Anyways, thanks for your advice although I do have some doubts.

Work on fitting plucks and spacing amongst a constant rain of pikmin upon your opponent.
Is this just against Toon Link or against all characters in general? That sort of campy Olimar doesn't seem to work with me all the time and I remember reading that TL is one of the only matchups where you can play like that and have it easy.

this is the type of olimar I need to play more like, haha. my only advice is your reaction time is balls and you need to learn fast/aggressive options.

Yeah I know my reaction time sucks :/ Playing Falco hasn't helped me hone it very well. I think it's of the things holding me back, especially against MK. TL is an easy match up for me with Olimar but I have a horribly difficult time against Olimar. If someone could give me some advice on those vids it would be much appreciated xD.

Also, sit in your shield less. This kind of goes along with the last tip. You nearly always want to be moving as Olimar - it makes you harder to hit and it keeps people out of your personal bubble (which is the last place you want a person).
As far as that goes, when moving around should I just walk/run around my opponent going for pivot grabs and the like or just run/rolldodge away to keep throwing pickmin at him? I'm used to just roll dodging away and putting projectile pressure on most games but I think Olimar's rolldodge isn't all that good...

Either way, thanks for the advice :D

you should just mix it up, sometimes run, sometimes walk, sometimes throw out random fsmash/fair, sometimes grab, sometimes jump on a platform.

the more options youre conscious about, the better youll be able to throw off your opponent, and the better youll be able to capitalize on your opponent's mistakes

As far as the first part goes, the "rain of pikmin" will be matchup dependent (Snake, DDD, TL, Ganon, DK, others) but the "fit plucks in between" applies to every matchup. One of the most underrated and least talked about yet essential skills is learning how to fit your plucks in between your actual gameplay. When you take a second or a second and a half to pluck more pikmin, you give your opponent plenty of time to either go on the offensive or escape from you if you were applying pressure. Try to keep track of how many pikmin you have out and alive; you should aim to never need to pluck more than one or two pikmin at a time, aside from specific situations (such as after throwing all/most of your pikmin offstage at a recovering opponent to rack extra damage).

Considering the second part, your playstyle is basically going to have to change with each matchup, so this is a hard question to answer. Play more games, and if you find that you have trouble with a specific character or feel like you can do it better, just come to the social and ask for advice on it. (I say the social because not everyone checks this thread often.) As far as how to play against TL, aside from camping I'm not the guy to ask; I have trouble with him once he gets closer.

As far as I could tell, you weren't really doing anything wrong. However, that first stock in Castle Siege dragged on a little long for DDD, you had a couple of chances to usmash him with a yellow pikmin.

xD Weird story behind that though. I made this account back when I started going to tournaments but I stopped after a while. Also, I never posted, I just read all the stuff that was on the Falco boards since I never got replies and they look down on people with low post counts.

Most of my posting has been over the course of the last two weeks since I got into a bit of a stage debacle and decided I should go to the next tournament and win at least one game (yes, I've never won a single game in all my tournaments :() Also, I don't play that much, I don't even own a wii or gamecube controller, I just borrow my best friend's xD.

On another note, I took everyone's advice and changed my play style a bit, here's a couple of matches I played today:

That first one is a Nike match, Batou. ^^;
I notice that Denti jumps or rolls toward him sometimes for little-to-no reason in the mislabeled one.
